Leave the awesome metallic color. No contest. That looks amazing as is. And I love black but ain’t no comparison in this case. Shows the hard work too.

An outside air supply for the fire would make it more efficient. You are sucking cold air into the building.

unfortunately most home built stoves with heat exchangers do not incorporate some sort of way to clean the soot off the tubes ... this needs to be done when designing the stove.... I included a extra door for mine which did allow me to clean the tubes but it was a real pain in the butt.... a plate with holes in it for the tubes is all that is needed with a handle so you can push and pull to slide the plate back and forth over the tubes and that will knock off 90% of all the soot build up sense your stove is so wide I recommend 2 rods attached to the plate so you can work it forward and back without it jamming up. to retrofit this idea to your stove would involve taking one of the ends off and that is a no go in most cases. BUT without it your stove will be useless in about a year because of the soot and ash buildup on the tubes.... trying to clean the tubes with a poker does work to a certain extent but figuring out some way to clean the heat exchanger tubes is a must. you will find your stove produces less and less heat because of the soot buildup.... maybe a super hot roaring fire will clean most of the soot off i don't know...but it's worth a try. cleaning a stove...any stove, even a pellet stove needs to be a top priority in it's design I knew this when I built my heat exchanger wood stove and it did work great but just having a door is hardly adequate you need a plate that has holes slightly bigger than the pipes so it can slide on the pipes doing all of them at once this will clean 90% of the soot off in one motion... keep in mind it will want to jam side to side so you need to be able to counteract that....(that is why you use 2 rods hooked to the middle of the sides of the plate one on each end) you simply pull the plate out with the rods before you start the fire. push it back so it rests against the back wall and everything is normal but you just cleaned the tubes! it works great....put this idea to use in your next stove build !

Good work! Couple of things to consider: 1) build a "jacket" around it with about 20mm gap. Leave a hole at the bottom and the top. This will create a natural convection, which will draw more heat out into the workshop. It will also provide a cooler surface, adding to safety. 2) to improve tip 1, add a fan to force air through the jacket. 3) get some ducting from the peak of the roof to the floor with a fan inline. The temperature difference between floor an ceiling is huge. Bring all that hot air down to where you are. Have fun, and keep playing with fire!

I wonder if you'd be able to run water through the pipes and run it into the floor for radiant floor heat for the upstairs? Put a circ pump on it to push the water through the system? Would probably need some type of pressure relief but that would be cool. Nice stove man. Very cool!

45 years ago I bought a wood stove from southern idaho called Hurricane.. The stove was built like most other woodstoves except it employed this same piping in the top..At the back of the stove was a blower much like this one.. We lived in central Idaho near Clayton where temp go to 40 below and stay there for 30-40 days.. all day all night long.. Our stove was a medium one and that stove ran us out of the house during these cold periods.. I wonder if anyone else ever had or used this maker.. The wood stove was amazing..

AWESOME vid I looked at 3 others on how there work, that were titled "how a barrel stove with heat exchanger works" and not ONE said how it was made or how it worked, Just idiots walking around their shop showing that a wood stove warms a shop (shocker),

What could happen to the pikes in the stove if you don’t have the blower motor going. Will they warp ?????

Compared to that "ultimate shop wood stove" that is on here this looks like something that your average DIYer could manage to do without too much trouble and not a lot of special tools and extreme welding ability Leaving it with the original 5 foot length would eliminate a lot of welding so it would be easier in that respect and the extra length of pipe is going to pick up / transfer more heat . , you may go through a few blades but you could cut out the holes for the pipes with standard hole saw., just lay out a plywood pattern to use as a "template/guide on each end. You could probably get Lowes or Home Depot to cut you some 5 foot pipes and for the non welders in the crowd take it to some place and get the pipes welded in and maybe fab up an air box for few hundred bucks

Tom you built an awesome stove there brother, and the number one thing I took from this video is how much you love your family and built a garage where everyone would have something to do and interact with mom and dad...you are probably nominated every year for family reunions ! Thank you for sharing the stove build and your marvelous shop mister....

I like it, could also be modified for auto feed wood pellets.

Only one minor criticism which could be major, is there's nothing around it to keep a small child or some knucklehead from leaning against it and melting their hand off or melting their jacket. A cheap way to address that might be to simply stack bricks around it, which will also help insulate it a little bit more retain heat.

I bet if you had some ceiling fans it would really help push the hot air up towards the top of the ceiling back down towards the floor.

Good looking, heat exchanger is great, but your combustion efficiency is still garbage. That thing is going to burn through in no time. Any time you have anything getting red, you're going to get warping and very rapid oxidation and erosion. Six years later, am I wrong? Why on earth would you want to regulate the air from the blower? If you want some better ideas, look into rocket mass heaters or masonry stoves. No truly efficient stove has metal exposed to flame.

aftr using a 300 gallon barrel for a stove 3/16th thick lasted almost 3 years b4 it startd crackin n leakin carbonmonoxide into my house. i build a 4x4x4 box 2 layers thick. 5 years later the warpage n crackin is bad but not on the outer layer wish i used 1/2 inch steel on sides and back. but that will be my next stove. always room for improvement and upgrades
