Thank you friend
R u gonna talk about the first?
I had always thought those things were Demetria’s version of bats
I feel like it was slightly rushed
I could see that. I feel like the tie-ins could have helped give the story room to breath if they had been built that way.
I'm really enjoying your segment on westman Comics. I only wish more people would listen To this series
They're such and underserved part of Marvel's history. I get that the broad audience isn't into Westerns these days, but these stories are so fun!
BATS IS THE GREATEST IN ALL MARVEL UNIVERSES!!!!
He's the bestest boy! I hope whoever takes over Dr. Strange's story doesn't forget about it.
Don’t u love boy meets girl stories?
Boring! 🥱
Thanks for checking it out at least.
Great review.
Thank you! I appreciate that a lot.
It’s a real shame that this company lasted such a short time. I didn’t know about the behind the scenes stuff but it sounds like it was made with the best of intentions. My first crossgen comic was the subject of your next video, meridian. I found the first volume in my school library and fell in love instantly. Now I own all four volumes….only to realize there is apparently still more story?!
Finding the individual issues isn't too hard, but finding those last two volumes is gonna be tough. I've never seen them in person, just in listings online. Good luck hunting!
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 thanks, maybe one day I’ll start
I was always under the impression that the narration was just sephie’s thoughts and they wanted to give them some style.
🥹 You have no idea how lonely I have felt knowing about this series
Meridian's slower story and more character focused narrative make it a hard sell in the comic market, in general. The fact that it's 20 years old at this point doesn't help. ; __ ; But that's why we have to share the love! Welcome!
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 always nice to know I’m not the only one who loves this series. Maybe marvel will make an omnibus for this as well
@@redrasegarden Legit, the main reason that I bought the Sigil one (and plan to buy the Mystic one) is to encourage Marvel to do more.
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 I should probably one day as well
I'm loving this storyline, having been a huge Tomb of Dracula fan from way back. I just hope Marvel lets the story threads all play out rather than doing a hurried wrap up like they often do with these large sweeping sagas.
I agree - I'm worried about the ending. There are a LOT of story elements going on here and I don't know if one comic can wrap it all up. It's been a blast otherwise. I haven't enjoyed a big crossover like this in quite awhile, so it's refreshing.
Very monology/talky (the comic series itself) and plenty of angst. Plus, just one action scene/page. Damn, take my $4 ;-)
Literally came into the comments to say I mistook you for Comics Breakdown. I don't think it's a coincidence that you're using an almost identical name to a channel with way more subscribers.
I appreciate you stopping by, although I am sorry for the confusion. Our name similarities ARE coincidence. I started Comic Book Breakdown as a podcast in February of 2019 (Comics Breakdown joined youtube in January 2020 and I joined in June of 2019) and only created a youtube channel when listeners basically demanded it. I don't watch any youtube shows about comics, so it was only after a few months of doing youtube that someone pointed out exactly the same situation you did. If anything, the confusion hurts ME, as the algorithm suggests Comics Breakdown before Comic Book Breakdown for like, PAGES. I have watched some of his stuff since and he does great work.
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 perhaps a rebranding is called for? I don't see you growing without one, regardless of the quality of your content 🙂
What a great series. Not only do you summarize what happened in the comics, but you also accurately interpret the events, motives and intentions of the authors.
I try to do my best! Thank you for the kind comment.
New sub thank you! RIP Benny
Geoff Johns greatest achievement is New52 Aquaman, this was a character nobody wanted to write anymore. DC itself considered Aquaman finished. Johns fought to be given Aquaman, he was told it was a waste of time. Soon he proved them all wrong, Aquaman finally became a seller, at one point he outsold all marvel books and some of the more famous DC characters. What Geoff did with Arthur and Mera was huge, he showed what potential they had. Something few people know Geoff wanted to write Aquaman for 100 issues but DC took him off the book after 25issues, belief or not the reason was Aquaman was overshadowing other characters. Since this run the book never recovered the magic of Johns run. Jeff Parker who followed johns, was very good but he was removed after few issues for the idiotic DC YOU initiative which failed with Bunn as writer. One final correction, At the end of Rebirth Aquaman, Mera is not the Queen anymore, she abolishes the monarchy, Arthur and Mera marry and go to live at Amnesty with their daughter Andy. Future state Aquaman or 5G Aquaman, wasn't just about Jackson as the new Aquaman, but also about Andy as Aquawoman.
Thank you for the additional info! I know I definitely fell in love with Aquaman and Johns’ writing on this run. I was really hoping that I’d enjoy the follow-up writers, but Parker’s run just didn’t have that same vibe. A damn shame. And I didn’t know about Andy at all! Between Tempest, Aqualad, and Andy, it really feels liked DC doesn’t know what to do with those younger characters.
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 Parker's run was not Johns level, but solid and was doing very well. Stupidly DC removed him for an awful run. Andy Curry is much better than tempest or Aqualad. She has Mama's looks and quick temper added to Dad's cool approach plus all of their powers which makes her a power house. She kicks ass
Thanks for covering these stories!
Thank you! This run opened up in such a fun way.
Thanks, you might've sold me on Void Rivals. I'm waiting for the first Transformers TPB to be delivered as I'm in Japan and it's a pain to get foreign comic issues here so I'm just going to get it all in one go. Now I feel I might have to pre-order Void Rivals and even Joe (like you I wasn't a fan as a kid)
Transformers is SO GOOD. I hope you enjoy it when it gets out to you! I would die if I had to wait for the books to come out, then be collected, and then shipped out to me. Having now read Void Rivals, I like the new concept that Kirkman is building over there. I do think that the role of other aliens or lifeforms in Transformers lore is always really small - after all, if there is life like the Cybertronians out there, why not more? And seeing that idea explored in Rivals is pretty neat. I like the characters and the TF tie-ins are neat, if a bit pointless at the moment? We just haven't seen where they go yet to really judge. The Joe stuff has been fascinating. I've been rolling around an idea for a video once Cobra Commander finishes, comparing what I've learned about Commander and Duke.
Please do more Energon Universe speculation!
I'll try my best! It's clearly living rent free in my head.
I mainly know CrossGen for Sojourn, I got to late into comics to get into CrossGen when it come out, but I did like the back issues of Sojourn I've found and would have loved getting more of her series. I'm a big Star Wars fan and some other sci-fi things, so maybe someday I'll get to try some of their Sci-fi Comics (Chimera, Space Ace and Sigil). El Cazador and Scion even sounds pretty cool. My biggest problem seems to be that I'm not a fan of regular magic (not based on arthurian legends, genie's, trippy visuals or horror based monsters. Other then that) I'm not a fan of it. Which is why I stopped reading another archery comic that I otherwise liked (in the beginning) from Zenescope "Robyn Hood", there was just too much magic stuff in the series.
If you like Star Wars and sci-fi, then I suggest looking up CrossGen's Negation. While it does have some magical elements to it, the book is sci-fi first and is kind of a "Dirty Dozen" meets sci-fi story. Basically, a group of abducted characters have to escape the Negation Empire, which rules it's entire universe, so they don't really have a place to run to. But it's fast-paced, got a good sense of humor, and it's cross-section of CrossGen "types" works as a good introduction to them all. Sojourn is a FANTASTIC comic though! Scion shares a writer with it, although the artwork is very different from Sojourn's. Same for Chimera, now that I think about it - they were all written by Ron Marz. My wife read a bunch of the Zenescope stuff, but I've never tried it. It feels like there are a BUNCH of books, so I've always held off exploring it.
1:11:02 Between Arsenal & Catman Cheshire seems to have a thing for red-headed men.
In those cases, can ya blame her?
enjoyed it bro
Thank you!
Are you going to redo the Milestone Comics videos you said you may also redo since you didn't have illustrations for like you do on your newer reviews?
Given that the Milestone books are all pretty short, they would probably be amongst the easier ones to redo. Not that I want to re-record those episodes, but I also still have the scripts, so I could if I found the time. A redo might also be a good time to cover the next set of comics from them.
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 - I need to re-listen to your Hardware video, because it had my mind churning the first time, and since then I have created a half a dozen documentries reowrking ideas for how I would have wrote his origin story on windows documentaries. I have also done the same with Icon, because think they have far more potential than they currently have, and their origin stories should be redone.... i do that with many comic book characters for some reason, I can't help not improving stories I think can be better.
Great video! So what was the big story that was just getting started when they shut down!!!
That - sounds like a great idea for a video. *checks schedule for an intense writing session*
I miss that intro (haven't been on the channel in a while) and had to dance to it... I couldn't miss this one because I have heard so many great things about Cross-Gen. I didn't know you did company insights, but I am all for it because I know it is going to be something worth listening to. See you in 40...
Cliff! Good to hear from you again! Glad to have you onboard for Meridian, I'll do my best to keep things exciting. I wanted to do an overview because CrossGen's been defunct for 20 years, so a lot of people might have missed out on them when they were active. Marvel and DC are still active, so I feel like they don't need much introduction.
just got interested in marvel westerns since i want to know about two gun kid's life before the marvels project. i'll be following your episodes!
I hope you enjoy! The Westerns are a mixed bag, for sure, but they're also a lot of fun.
I like your style dude! Well done
Why thank you!
I’m don’t rate Donny as a writer
I like these types of reviews keep putting these kind of movie reviews
Comic book only or just any movie?
I’ve been buying and reading Crossgen trades as well as uncollected issues for a good while now. They still hold up both in terms of story and art. The world really needs a comic company like them right now.
I love hearing that. Mark Alessi specifically wanted to create comics that appealed to a timeless audience - and it sounds like they succeeded (at least in that aspect). More CrossGen coming soon!
This channel deserves more subs. I’m going to share one of your videos Twitter.
I certainly appreciate that!

I've been hoping to visit the old building, as a pilgrimage of some kind, but have never made the time to do it.
❤CrossGen as well. Fantastic company.
Really enjoyed your video. Love the description of each title on your list. Not going to lie; not a fan of most of the titles you listed. It’s nice to see another person’s perspective though and why they love the comics they’re collecting. Transformers was the only book you mentioned that was on my top 10 for 2023. Some of my favourite titles over the past year were Peacemaker: Tries Hard, Fire Power by Robert Kirkman, Kroma and the continuation of Saga (which doesn’t come out fast enough for me).
Thank you for taking the time to hear me out; even if we don't like the same books, I really appreciate it. If Fire Power made your Top 10, then clearly there's something good about it - but other than Chris Samnee on art (whose work I love!) I haven't heard anything about the book. Any chance you could sell me on it? What makes it so good? I went through a BIG "I'll read anything Robert Kirkman writes" phase and when I fell off, I REALLY fell off. I've never heard of Kroma, but I'll look into it, and I actually love Saga - but it hasn't come out regularly enough for me to keep up with it. I read the first three volumes (back when there were only like 5), hit money problems, and had to stop. Might be time to catch up though.
A small follow up: I stumbled across the first issue of Kroma at a dollar sale recently and I had to pick it up. Partially just cuz it was so big - that’s a lotta comic for a dollar! And mostly because you suggested it. HOLY CRAP WAS IT GOOD. I loved the use of color, the characters were sympathetic so quickly. When I first started reading, it felt cliche, but by the end of the first issue, I was SO IN. Definitely gonna finish that one.
Awesome one man.👍
Thank you!
Thanks for the list, your 168th subscribers.
Thank you for listening/watching! Always open to a new comic suggestion.
The fact we never got any cartoons or movies for these cowboys is insane.
I haven't given up hope yet! Not that I have a lot of hope, but still, there's time.
SO WHATS UP WITH PARKERS RUN BECAUSE I AM STARTING OVER WATCHING THIS AGAIN!!!!
Sorry @cliffwoodbury5319, but it's time for me to explore other waters. While I'll probably continue with Aquaman some day, for now, I want to read some other comics, other writers, and other artists.
Absolutely fascinating. While I'm unsure about the particular use of DID here, as it is a pretty rare version of the condition she has, this is fiction. With that out of the way, I like what they are doing with the character(s) of Mary. I would have to see about how the story progresses moving forward, but I wonder they are using the DID as a story telling mechanic regarding how people can contain, within them, contradictory multitudes. The various personalities seem to work together in a very disjointed, same goal, detective style now, but there are already hints at misgivings between the personalities and I can't help but wonder if that will manifest and the character struggling with themselves. It's been done before and is generally depicted as a cop-out "they're crazy" moment, but there is real potential here for an allegorical representation of inner conflicts. Let me tell you, much like you had to read this multiple times, I had to slow down my normal viewing speed (fast video make brain happy) and sit and think on the topic for a bit. If I were reading this I'd have to get use to the art style. I don't dislike it, by any means, but I have difficulties differentiating shapes with this kind of style. Excellent analysis!
I wish the other 4 cities of Atlantis were found because they existed in the films that have come out since, so between the comic and the films something has to have happened for the cities to be discovered and brought back into the fold, and it sounds like this was going to be divulged in unreleased comics down the line.
I'm glad that Johns got to bring them to the forefront in the Aquaman movie, at least a little bit, but I'm still surprised at how little anyone else has brought them up. This is such fertile ground to explore! As a writer, I would've been all over those concepts.
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 Johns wanted to explore the 7 kingdoms, he had plans for that, his Aquaman run was to last some 100 issues. But the same powers at DC that tried to stop him from writing Aquaman in first place, decided to end his run at Nr25. Kelly Sue Deconnick did something with the 7 kingdoms she even showed the other kingdoms, pretty forgettable stuff which should be forgotten the sooner the better.
Volko making statements of him not knowing or caring what happens on the surface world goes back to the ecosystems either ignoring each other or going to war with each other with no regards to finding common ground or peace.
It's just so funny to me that an Evil Justice League can take over the world, move the moon around, and Vulko doesn't give a single crap. To be fair, the surface world never cares about what happens in Atlantis! So I guess we're square.
That was a cool vision of the past that fills in many gaps in Atlantis' origin story when he sat on the throne, but like usually you had many great points that could have further improved/propped up the story... and knowing how they survived until they got gills would have been good. it could have been as simple as a dome was put up at the time of the catastraphy, or just after it, and the few that escaped and didn't drown, or were stuck in sealed rooms were saved, and then .....
Johns definitely either dropped the ball or didn't get to explain something. Given that he had to reveal ALL of Atlantis' history in a single issue, maybe he had a plan for how Atlanteans developed gills and just ran out of room. I get that we couldn't get everything, but CMON MAN. When I was researching the previous version of Orin, I was surprised to read that he just put a dome over Atlantis and then had a magical-alchemist-type dude make a potion that grew gills. So simple!
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 Johns run was planned for 100 issues not 25
I'm in a deep dive with Marvel Westerns rn and I came upon your video. Great stuff, I subbed
The Westerns were a lot of fun to cover, thank you! I hope you enjoy.
U aren't lieing. Definently a masterclass in story telling!!!! 2 Great issues today and an amazing way to end everything in the last issue!!!!! Ur not just getting tantalizing stories that make you want to get to the next issue, but he has been adding so many new characters threwout these stories!!!!
My favorite thing about Johns' storytelling with Green Lantern previously and Aquaman now is how he expands the scope/world of the characters. It makes it feel bigger, more real, more lived in, and I love that.
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 He's built it up so well but I was expecting this run to end with this issue because comics are no different than films (justice league) were you get a good ending and then it goes on and has several good ending and gets enoying, but this was not the climax I was expecting... And I find it odd that Aqua-Man was still wounded by ice 6 months later... as you stated they seam to have messed up the time line with other stories also but many people that read Aqua-Man i think may not read all the titles or because he has a nitche group they may not care if the rest of the league doesn't match up though it would be nice.
Volko knows many prophaces
the new/last Aqua-Man film stated there were 7 different cities in Atlantis and I hope they (d.c. comics) add new characters to their Aquatic environment, and maybe in the future a new character and one from a Pacific (so not Atlantis) city would have this mission with this group so Aqua-Man may pop in and out, because a Pacific aquatic people may know more about the glove. But of course I like aquatic characters and they will probably never add whole civilizations and all the characters needed for them to D.C....
This comment has PERFECT timing! We will actually be addressing the Seven Cities of the Seven Seas in episode 21, if I have my timing/planning right. I agree otherwise; the ocean is such a big place, the idea that there's ONE city of people living in it seems silly.
@@comicbookbreakdown2458 D.C. have created a handful of Aqua-Men and I wish they all had different names and outfits and were all from other Atlantises because it would be so much better.... And then Marvel has Aqua-Man as king of Atlantis witch is just another Aqua-Man or all the Aqua-Men are just other Namors. I wish Namor actually had a submarine in his origin and in his stories since he is called the submariner, and like i commented in my first post or two to you I wish they would make more Stingray stories since he isn't a king. Superhero comics could do with more aquatic characters getting stories in my opinion.
