How I Made This Animated Webseries!
Here I finally get a chance to do something I've wanted to talk about for a long time which is diving into my animated webseries 'Poxy Bleedin Shop'. Here I talk about why I made it, how I made it and how I feel about it almost five years later.
'Poxy Bleedin' Shop' is a 2D animated webseries about an off license in a rough area of town in Ireland and the colorful characters that frequent it. Themes include alcohol and drug abuse and homelessness.

Editing & Sizing Up Footage From Block 2
I came back after watching a bunch of episodes of Poxy Bleedin Shop. It’s really good. Have you thought of packaging it all up and submitting to different streamers with Filmhub?
This is super cool Thomas. The animation quality looks great and I love your style. This is a great story, it almost reminds me of Clerks, making use of a crap job, even if just for inspiration. I'm going to have to check out this show in more depth.
Hey cheers yeah its very Clerks for sure, making art was such a survival technique for me in this job as I'm sure it was for Smith in that shop too. Yeah check out the show if you can it's interesting see a bit of the underbelly of Irish society!
@ I found it and watched a bunch of it, I love it.
@@failedfilmmaker ah wow thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! Sharing stuff with new people is the best part of this platform
Can't wait to hear more about Gardeners Planet, I'll be following the journey for sure.
hi cheers, thanks yeah my next video will be getting back to it and I'll be talking about some of the pretty cool (I think) motion capture we did
Thanks for stopping by guys! What do you think of my animation? If you haven't already please like and subscribe as I want to keep doing so much more filmmaking content!
If you enjoy doing it, and you have the ideas, why not make a 3rd season? You are never going to make everyone happy...
Thanks Bill, its more about time though and making the time to commit to it than anything else
@@thomasquainfilm The animation looks really good, I second this 3rd season.
@@failedfilmmaker haha I am starting to think about it, I'll have to find my notes!
Well done
Well done 👏
Thanks so much!
Cool stuff! I would love to shoot 16mm one day. Seems like we had similar paths especially with shooting hi8 and then miniDV. I liked your thoughts on the bush in touch of evil. You know Welles was trying to convey something. For me it looks like a stoic man but the fern representing almost like tentacles or something foreboding inside him.
Ah cool yeah I did reckon some of your early films must have been MiniDV too, I loved it it was a cool format I actually had a very hard time switching to card in 2011 as I really didn't trust it cause I couldn't see the tape lol. No better times than when you left the house with a few MiniDV's in your pocket!
yeah the Welles thing is definitely interesting too, have you seen the film? He kind of is a corrupt cop so the tentacles thing is a good call as he does have a lot of fingers in a lot of pies. Also the character is kind of a force of nature. I think a lot about that tree lol
@ I haven’t actually seen it which is weird. I do know about it though. There was an awesome Hitchcock breakdown series on TH-cam that the name completely escapes me but broke down his episodes he directed of AH presents. It’s really good, I’ll remember the name and send it to you. It reminds me of this tree/brush discussion
@@failedfilmmaker yeah do I'll check it out
It’s pronounced “film”, not “film”. 😉 Maith thú 👏🏼 sounds good, will check it out
haha thanks I'm trying!
Great stuff! Keep them coming.
Thanks Bill! Hope the holidays are still treating you well!
great stories! Interesting to hear how winding your journey has been. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Yeah winding is definitely the right word! Feels like the hardest thing in the world sometimes just to do one thing
Bravo Thomas, can't wait to see it!
Thanks Aidan really appreciate that, hope all is well
We've been on such an amazing journey making this film and it's been so great to share so much of it with you guys! Let me know in the comments how you think the new footage looks and what projects your working on. Also don't forget to like and subscribe!
This is great! Congrats! Id love to work woth you someday
yeah would be great Im always trying to find more people in cork to make stuff with
Congrats. All of your hard work is finally paying off! Fair Play!
Thanks yah its exciting!
Awesome Thomas! Congrats!
Thanks Jamie really appreciate it! Hope all is well in Vancouver!
Fake. Don't believe it. : P
Better believe it gurl!
Well done Thomas :)
Thanks Aidan can't wait to share it with you!
Congrats, it looks to be your best work yet!
Thanks man, appreciate that. I'm excited for you to see it. We must catch up next year
So happy for you, buddy! You did it!
Couldn't have done it with you!
Congratulations! I hope post goes brilliantly
Thanks Bill really appreciate that! Hope all is good with you
thankyou buddy love that ! hey do you get a laptop bag pack with it ?
Ah thanks for watching! No there was no laptop bag included unfortunately!
Interesting video! Impressive to see you finally learning 3D animation! I am very curious to see the final result of your Sci Fi Magnum Opus! Keep it up!!!
Wow thank you so much, yes it is becoming a magnum opus
Thanks for tuning in guys the support means a lot! Please do like and subscribe and throw a comment below as this channel is all about reaching out and meeting new people. What other skills do you think contemporary indie filmmakers need?
Why does your title say vector if it's katana
said it by mistake! Katana was the previous model!
Thanks so much for dropping by. How do you store your footage? And how much space is enough? Please do like and subscribe and let me know if there is other indie film work I could talk about!
hehe
hehe
I think anyone whos made movies has had this issue. My biggest question is why in the world did you go from Mac to Windows!!! haha jk. I used windows/PC for 20 years and when I finally went Mac, I couldn't imagine going back. Having all the footage on one drive is a good idea, have you been using proxies to edit? That is a life saver for a faster timeline in Premiere.
Yeah I should have done proxies I didn't I'm pretty embarrassed about how I handled all this to be honest sometimes I'm still acting like I'm dealing with 1080p footage when really you have to alter your workflow so much for 4K RAW. I switched because I wanted the better graphics card for some Blender stuff and my friend was using a similar computer to this and she recommended
@ If you are using premiere you can still get proxies made. The built in premiere proxy system I avoided for a long time but it’s actually quite impressive. It will make tiny files of your Raw4k but still utilize the 4K frame so you don’t have to resize anything after when you go to render. Highly recommended
@@failedfilmmaker yeah I'm using premier I think honestly I will just stick with it this time as I can't face going back to do that and I think the new laptop can handle the BRAW files but yeah proxies are must for next time. I've really only begun to understand how powerful and adjustable RAW is as I've gotten in color grading all this time I've wondered why they were so big
@ Yah raw stuff is a beast
@ You actually could do the proxies even now with no disruption. Just need to let the proxies render
Pure Quain dumbassing 😂 Now you need a Sandisk Professional g-drive 24TB and a mdisc blu-ray burner for archiving.
it is to be fair, when your dealing with 4K raw it makes 2TB look like 500GB yeah nightmare, I'll have to see what I'm buying next as I'm totally broke right now
Another tip i learned years ago is to make all my drives Exfat or NTFS as i also have a Mac and a PC. There's a great plugin i have that was like 20 euro that let's me use any format of drive including NTFS on my Mac.
yeah there's been so may obstacles I feel like I should have reached out to others soon who have had to deal with similar issues. I guess some people have to learn the hard way lol
Oh God, nightmare. I've been where you've been, done what you've done. What's worse is those regular drives become too slow for editing too. I've slowly over the last few years been replacing all my drives (i had 12) to SSD's and they are so fast you can edit directly from them. I don't know if they do bigger than 4tb though and you'd have needed a 5-6 with all the edit files and extra assets. Nightmare.
Thanks for checking out my video! This is from an early era of digital cinema and it was really interesting for me to look back at it. Make sure to like and subscribe!
I never realised you made a war movie! Looks ambitious for a student project. The VHS artifacts make it look like you shot it in the 90s. Some gnarly violence! Please make more violence and more VHS style!
Thank you! Yes I will
Looking good Thomas. Great that you stepped it up from the first one. 💪
Thanks so much Bill yeah it looks like we had fun anyway as always its about finding a balance between ambition and what you can actually pull off
Thanks
No problem!
nice laptop keep going
Thanks so much!
congratulations 🎉❤😊
Thank you! I'm excited!
I hope post production goes smoothly with your new laptop
Thanks Bill me too! Exciting times ahead!
Specs? Can I get some specs please?
I didn't want to say them in the video as I amn't really a computer guy but here they are. The fans are already louder than I expected and I've just been using it for Blender donuts so far Processor Description: Intel Core i9-13980HX Graphics description: RTX 4080
@@thomasquainfilm That's not enough specs to satisfy me. What ram and hard drive are we dealing with? Yeah, that happens when you try to fit desktop components into a laptop body you need smaller fans working overtime to deal with the heat. I'd try a few sample jobs in Blender and see how annoying the fan gets when you're pushing the laptop to its limits. Send it back if you can't live with it and get a desktop with better cooling, liquid cooling preferably. Or a Mac Studio...
@@rioter182 32GB DDR5/RAM and 1TB SSD, Windows 11 Home yeah I can live with it its just surprising I'm sure I'll tune it out as long as the fan noise is normal lol thats all I was worried about
