มุมมอง 9675 ปีที่แล้ว
Original 1923 footage of Alcatraz Island from the University of South Carolina Archives. Great to see how many times they redid the walk down the cells and open the doors then close the doors
Alaska was not U.S. state in 1909. Alaska was granted statehood in 1959 Our 49th state Hawaii was our 50th state on 1960 ,😊
Homicidal traits and impulsively dangerous tendencies! Those were the words to describe Robert Stroud as for the reason he was sent to Alcatraz and left on his own with his own cell. Also, his homosexual advances toward other men had been so pronounced he was not to be trusted to go into main line population! He killed one man in a fight when he was out of prison when he was a young man, and he murdered a guard when he was in prison. This man Robert Stroud was one of the worst human beings you could have done time with inside or out of prison. He was a low-life beyond measure and even the system itself of prisons and guards did not know what to do with him except to leave him alone by himself. Truly a sick remorseless low-life bastard created by the devil himself! In the book by the Alcatraz inmate Alvin Karpis he talks about Robert Stroud and he realizes what a low-life he really was. Read the book On The Rock and you'll see. Many people have claimed that they wish Robert Stroud was alive today just so they could kill him the self!
Brilliant. 👍 👏 Thank you. 😊
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Stroud
Probably too many childhood head injuries from his alcoholic father.
yes
Bad Boy Bobby
Yeah u Know thats True
Looking to make a documentary on the Alcatraz prison escape. Am I able to use footage if I give credit? Thanks.
What an interesting story. There was no reason for that guard to treat him badly. He should have been fired. So sad that he was locked up for all that time.
Yeah, that sure justifies killing the guard.
@@tomdumb6937 Shut your smart mouth.
That was an awsome story‼️🙏🙏🙏🙏
My wife and I just went to alcatraz last week and something about that place is wanting me back. I keep having thoughts of needing answers from those who died their and I feel and believe they want me back to tell me what they need to say. I'm not a skeptical person when it comes to spirits getting attached to humans and I feel I was attached to. My dreams and thoughts are nothing but past memories of the one who got into my mind and attached it's spirit to mine
I like how phasmophobia will make me hunt and talk to a 'Robert Stroud' and I won't have any idea he died in jail. Or loved birds (and migratory patterns)
Wtf is stewed fruit?! I don’t blame him. This guard made his death wish first time he rejected bird man. Are you serious guy? Have you done your research on bird man? He’s killed once. You don’t think he could do it again? lol dumbass
🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿❤️🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿
The guard behind him wrote a book of his job there
What parent would even go to Biden to get their child pardoned so you could see them again. The urge that mom had to see her son again. Is incredible she just went to Woodrow Wilson!!
Warden Madigan and I both lived on Alcatraz. He lived there for many years, I lived there for 1 night. I tried to get the Birdman's cell in D Block but one of the park rangers had dibs. I recall waking up with a stuffy nose because it was so dusty.
They should open that prison back up
Too expensive. They had to import everything , including water!
Thanks for this history.
Thank you for uploading this
Fascinating story. Interesting fact: USA has 4% of the world's population and 25% of the world's prison population. Prisons IDEALLY are supposed to rehabilitate. More frequently, they aggravate.
Let's see..."don't do the crime ...don't do the time"
@@wallaceb9120 a very pretty ideal. Do some research.... in the USA prisons are built and economic pressure is put on police agencies and c o u r t s to fill them . Don't believe me? Do some research you will see it's true.
This is amazing.
Yeah can't wait to get to Alcatraz so I can get a single cell.
I actually went in the walk-through tour of Alcatraz in 1983, and I actually got to see the underground 'torture chambers', and stepped into the cell that Clint Eastwood went into called, 'the hole,' in the movie, "Escape from Alcatraz." They let us walk in to the what was 'the shop,' the shower room, and see the ACTUALL little van that was used in the movie that transported Clint from the boats up to the cell house at the beginning of the movie.
5 years before the famous escape that would lead to the prison’s closure
Love how the times were so different. Murrow is giving the best interview while smoking a cigarette on live waves
You can tell his wife was either readying a script and/or had one memorized. Bless her heart.
In the early 1970’s I used to read BOOKS about Alcatraz, with very few pictures on how it looked. Now I can do a virtual tour whilst laying in bed. Still, you gotta appreciate this old footage…I’m surprised I did not come across it at some library (as I child I was infatuate) with Alcatraz. Thanks for sharing.
You can volunteer on Alcatraz and give tours.
Different breed of man from that time
Wonderful video. When I listen to people like the Warden, it makes me feel people now are far less competent and dignified. Are we evolving or devolving? It was also interesting to see the Warden’s home. Unfortunately during the Indian takeover in 1970 they vandalized and burned down many buildings including the Warden house.
It’s so crazy to see and hear how ppl talked back in those days and the quality of technology very impressive
👍
Crazy how that man single handedly destroyed my mystery box ruining my day
Having to pay 2000 for it to fix itself
SHUT UP, WILL YA!
He was #2 on the FBI's Most Wanted List right under Osama Bin Laden. That is wild.
This is the best thing I've ever seen in my life (No satire, I love alcatraz lol). So interesting that their are so many buildings which I never ever knew existed, like the extension on powerhouse.
Cigarettes so addictive the interviewer couldn’t distinguish and continued smoking during filming.
He paid them off until he got old.. obvi...
I wonder what the warden meant by saying the 3 faith's. was he talking about Judaism Christianity and ??
Protestant, Catholic, Jewish.
$50.00 each for reward? They really didn't want to catch them did they? From what I saw on the History Channel, they didn't much want to keep them in prison either. They made it.
$50 in 1962 was over $400 in today’s money
great video !
Alcatraz history, Thanks for this great footage of the start of Alcatraz. Before WW2 started even ! I guess the Island rocky prison approved by President Franklin D Roosevelt. Not to mention FBI head J. Edgar Hoover. At 8:25 The Warden James Johnston (1874-1954) was the first and longest term Warden in Alcatraz (1934-1948). Old saltwater was his Nickname ! Plus at 3:26 the guard walking back and forth like that could get awful tedious it seems. But like everybody else he has a job to do ! Wow ! at 5:38 look how rough the Alcatraz Sea Water is ! Lastly Depression era Gangster's Al Capone who would arrive in Alcatraz in August , 22,1934 and Machine gun Kelly would arrive in Alcatraz in September4, 1934. Would be some of the first criminals to arrive there. Alvin "Creepy " Karpis would arrive in Alcatraz in 1936 and stay all the way to 1962 near the closing of it. Thank's for the fascinating upload. This video should have WAY more views !
Alcatraz Warden Paul Madigan (born- March, 13, 1897 died- December 25, 1974.) He served as Alcatraz warden 1955-1961. Warden Madigan had worked originally as a correctional officer in the 1930's on Alcatraz and he worked himself up to Warden eventually. He was more soft and lenient to the prisoners and was liked better by the prison staff . There is your quick history on this Warden folks. Just to give you more of a background on him. And the guard behind the Warden at 2:40 plays the part of looking side to side if any badguys are escaping ! Haha. Myself, I have seen Alcatraz from the shoreline as a kid when I visited San Francisco, California in the late 1970's. But this was before you could go inside it and go on tour and all. Plus I belong to a Shark Research committee. California has Great White Sharks but interestingly enough the Great Whites do not swim on the Alcatraz side. Their mostly swimming elsewhere in the California waters and you have the more harmless leopard sharks there. Which is lucky for the Alcatraz escapees. LOL. This video should have WAY more views by the way. Thanks for the upload ! 😀
I swear everyone’s voice was deep in the 50’s and 60’s lmao
maybe because most of them smoked?
Sad that their home is now in ruins.
Arson in 1970. Only a shell now.
Master manipulator. Just goes to prove the feds are the biggest gangster
The Clint Eastwood vehicle “Escape From Alcatraz”, directed by Don “Riot In Cell Block 11” Siegel, was based on this event.🌁
And now we know there was a successful escape.photographic evidence of 2 men in South America in the1970s.with long hair and sideburns. So not a perfect record warden.
It was a perfect record at the time of this 1957 interview and for the warden himself as he left Alcatraz before the great escape. And that Brazilian photographic evidence is flimsy at best; sunglasses, beards, slightly blurry, etc.
No proof it was the Anglins in the photo. The escape is still unsolved.
