Remove Pivot Pin from GM tilt column without special tools
มุมมอง 112K8 ปีที่แล้ว
Why spend $20-$40 for a special puller you'll likely only use once? Here's how to get it done for less than $5.
The best underrated video on TH-cam! Thank you so much sir!
Tried this, and the bolt is now stuck in there!!
Lifesaver!best I find was stainless steel screws but works like a charm. Now Im struggling to get it back together.
Those that are breaking.put a dime under the wheel side of the nut it will level it out and pop right out
doing this in a 91 corvette tomorrow From what I understand, on a vette its because of the pivot spring tension and the driver pullung himself out with the steering wheel , hence only one pin actually neesa to be replaced ... thank gawd ... what a pain ..!!
Good tip on removing the pin. Take dramamine before watching.
How do you reinstall the pins ??
Priceless, thank you sir! Info I needed for my 78 Scout.
Anyone still having trouble? I've stripped a bunch of the cheap tools, and grade 8 socket cap screw seems to be stronger but I'm still bending washers and stripping nuts, i bought stainless steel nuts but wasn't able to find grade 8 nuts. Afraid I'm going to break something... I don't understand why mine is so stuck.
Where can you buy the pins? I only have one in my steering column
Just did mine with 8/32 screw 1 inch. Came off easy
You sir are a genuis! Worked absolutely perfect for my 89 suburban!
It is really quite impressive you're able to do this at a little over 20mph ;)
I have to try this, the pivot pin removal tool did strip just like you said
Worked like a charm thanks very much.
i have been at this for 4 weeks and im now just getting to this oint bunch of bs
Creo que el que iba manejando este carro se estampó se le quedó el cerebro en el volante
finished my running around got all parts and tools needed. fixing today , wish me luck.
I spent 4 hours of My time (Wasted!) watching %×#& and this TRULY is the Only video that I needed to see. Thank You.
you better believe that helped. Thank you soooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im having trouble removing the pin on passenger side..any tips
helpful lifehack
saved me from buying a piece of junk tool and i did it your way first and it worked great!
i ran into this problem on a dodge 85 column, looks identical to this one.. it seems they come from the same manufacturer.. only differing in a few spots.. going to be trying this tomorrow.. was driving.. stopped for a soda.. got in the truck, started it up.. shifted the column and teh whole darn thing spun.. all the inside bolts had cut loose on this sucker...

Great video Sir. I'm very curious. Are the the 2 pins that you pulled out made of plastic or metal???
Metal
D-15 drawer at Lowe’s for the bolt. Just FYI
You sir are a wizard thank you much.
Where are you guys finding the bolt?
Busted 3 pivot pin tools from amazon $6-$40. Returned all 3 and got my money back. Pot metal junk!! Heading tomorrow to buy your bolt setup. Fingers crossed and thank you for posting this info!!!
Are you still around? Need some advice on my column.
You sir are a god send
Hey Richard. Great video! Can you demonstrate how to remove a broken special tool or bolt from the pivot pin area? In the case of breaking the pivot pin remover special tool in the door side slot on the steering column. Screw extractor/easy-out or a drill bit?
That just happened to me. I got that special tool, started turning it, and the thing broke off inside the pivot pin.
@@artiehadagi4230 I had to get a parts column and build that instead of fixing mine when this happened to me. Good luck.
Yeah... I had a piece break off in my pin, too. I got it out, but stripped the inside threads in the process. My current plan is to tap the hole with the next size up, and either create a slide hammer, or proceed in similar fashion as the video above. I did a lot of looking, and I couldn't find any 8-32 bolts in Grade 8; all I could find was slotted head machine screws, longest being an inch, and that's what got me in this current predicament. Those are soft as hell, and snapped right off.
Nice job. I just put the screws in there an put a set of Vice grips on the screw. Hammer does the rest.
Great idea, why buy a tool you may only use once. I have a 91 Camaro that will not lock in place. After I fix it I will probably never work on it again or any other.
This is one of the hardest to watch videos I have ever seen. Wtf get your shit together before you try to make a helpful video.
Oh and you can get the screws at menards because ace hardware didn’t have them
I had my pivot pin remover snap inside drilled it out and went with this and it worked 100% you sure are a car god now my steering is tighter then a nuns vag lmao returned the pivot pin remover and got my money back
'Went to my trusted yt channel' just calling it how it is ..I enjoy that...I like watching there faces... for technical purposes only LOL
LOL
Why not use a cutting torch?....instead I just used a loose screw and pulled it out with a pair of needel nose pliars....a littel wiggel action and a screwdriver as a fulcrum does the trick...a regular steel screw didn't need to be grade 8...A degree in automotive technology is very helpful...sorry I didn't go to an African College but being an expert in Micky mousing with Donald duck parts has its own rewards...lol
I heard if you unscrew the metal cap off the top of a spark plug, the threads are the same as the pin threads. You can pull it out that way.
@@DS-ss396 Got it
Yeah, tried that. It didn't work. In my van, those pins are jammed in tight as hell. Ended up bending the hell out of the 1st and 2nd screw, then the 3rd screw snapped off flush with the pin. I'd recommend the Grade 8, if one can find it (and thus far, I've not had luck in finding 8-32 in Grade 8)
I can't find the tool either. And i thought about using a socket and screw like your setup . Thanks for the G8 screw and nut advice!!
Napa, Autozone, O'reilly sell the tool among others. But this video shows a stronger tool than the special tool.
Wow brother mechanic, I found the tool easy enough but these tools are J U N K ! LOL I broke one off in my pin, thank GOD I'm smart enough to remove it lol, but I saw your video and I've been sharing with other brother mechanic , for this to me is the shit ! Lol God bless you man !
Can you put a column from a Chevy lumina fit in a Buick
Certainly. Though, depending on the year of the Lumina, and the year of the Buick, some modifications may have to be made, some fabrication may have to take place... In other words, maybe it will bolt straight in, or maybe not. Not enough info given for a clear answer
Make life easy grade 8 10/32 by 1 inch
Grade 8 10/32 by 1"
Thank you sir
@@nathanpolkoski5277 makes me glad that info is being used. Get her done mister!
@m G just got in in today! 83 c10 with tilt was an 8/32 I got an inch and a quarter to help my fumbling fingertips
I just did this on my 1990 GMC safari that I got for a deal. Thanks buddy!😁
Can someone tell me what a #8 32 thread bolt is? What’s the diameter of the bolt?
I was wondering that too. I was wondering if he meant it is a grade 8 (strength of metal) 8/32" screw. But maybe not because it seems a little big to be an 8/32". Maybe 10/32" or 12/32"? I may buy one of each.
@@wickedwoman5471 I never heard him say #10. He said grade 8 and #8.
It’s a standard size lol smaller than 1/4 they are around just gotta look. They will say 8/32 need about an inch long. Took me 5-10 minutes to find it in the isle
Nathan Polkoski thanks. I ended up getting a pivot bolt remover from amazon to make it easier.
thank u , that's right were I was with this tear down, I humbly thank you for your take on this issue.
Thank you! Worked on a 88 Firebird!
Improvised and overcame ! 🙌👍 I've had to make my own tools before too . Sometimes what you can come up with is better than what they're selling . Glad I found this video before I ran up against this issue .Kudos friend !! Just saved me from a major hassle .Much appreciated . Mine is a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird with tilt steering ,but I'm sure the parts are similar . Started feeling some play in the steering wheel up and down but not side play and became a little concerned. I've never had to deal with this sort of issue in all my years of repairing cars .Oh well there's always a first time for everything I guess . Again much appreciated and thumbs up .
Great. Couldn't find that tool anywhere. Very useful video. Thank you for making it.
