Gifu Castle is located in the city of Gifu, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Standing atop Mt. Kinka and along the Nagara River, it is one of the main symbols of the city. The Castle is also known as Inabayama Castle. It was designated a National Historic Site in 2011.
Located in the center of Gifu City, the 329 m-high Mt. Kinka is designated a National Historic Site as the "Gifu Castle ruins". Near the summit of Mt. Kinka, Gifu Castle which is famous for being where Oda Nobunaga took his first steps toward the unification of Japan towers above. It is possible to access the Mt. Kinka Ropeway from the base at Gifu Park. It runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 10 minutes on holidays. From the ropeway station at the summit to Gifu Castle is about an 8-minute walk. The current castle, because it was reconstructed in 1956 by the Gifu Castle Reconstruction Association, has display rooms for documents introducing the history of Gifu Castle, and also offers the highlight of a viewing platform with a panoramic view of the flowing clear stream and the Nagara River below. Bustling city streets in Gifu City offer sparkling night views, and Gifu City is even famous as a spot where many people gather to enjoy watching the first sunrise of the new year. The area is full of convenient sightseeing spots such as Squirrel Village which is an interactive plaza just by the ropeway station at the summit.
