That clip at the beginning was in a great guys basement. He made that model. In 1992 my friend Matt and I traveled to Cadiz for the coal festival with our own models. We were 15. While we were there running our models in the large tent with several other model draglines operating, some people came up to us and told us about this guy and his models in his basement. (keep in mind we were 15) of course if there is a model drag or shovel, we need to see it. When we got there one of the nicest people comes out and welcomes us to see the “mine”. It was fantastic. He explained how he would practice stacking the overburden to account for turns in the pit and many other things too. Now we are both 47 and still make model drags and shovels. Seeing this video is the first time since age 15 that either of us saw Charlie and his model. Watching his hand release the hoist and letting her gravity fall was the exactly the way he did it. Very good memory revived. Thank you for sharing something I never thought I would see again.

I used to sell the lubricants for Big Muskie when I worked at Whitmore Lubricants, and spent a lot of time on it a number of times. Once when we “walked” BM over a mile to a new pit location. Loved that machine!

I was 11 years old when I got to see the muskie,we went to I think Zanesville Ohio if I'm right,my uncle Carl stokes showed it to me.

I bought the VHS of this video back in the 90's . Glad to watch it again. Great sights and sounds of what it was like. If only we had the drones that are available today to get some better video of what we will never see again.

At 38:29 you can tell the old man is truly an deeply botherd about having to retire...he's been right there in the cab since 1964 probably spent more time there then any where else.. it's upsetting cause he's probably long gone by now...i wonder if he ever got the serial number mounted... great video 👍👍👍 they don't make eather one like that anymore 😞

The amount of wear all those sheaves, chains, joints, cables all get has to be huge. I can imagine the chain does a number on the bucket scraping it constantly.

Great video it would be amazing if such a impressive machine as Big Muskie was still in operation I plan on taking a ride over on my Harley from S.Western Pennsylvania to see the bucket in person and get a few pictures taken.

I worked at Marion Power Shovel for 23 years. It was originally called Marion Steam Shovel, but the name was changed in 1946. I have a lot of pride in what we did but, to be accurate, there were more shovels used to dig the Panama Canal from our competitor, Bucyrus-Erie, than there were from MPS.
