Year of Youth
American Songwriter's Contest
This song is very personal to me. It is a ballad of nostalgia, the ending of a chapter that's been an important part of your life, and overall just growing up and moving on.
Lyrics:
Long afternoons, I'm satisfied
Nowhere to be but here in time
I look around and take it in
And tell myself to savor every last moment
Then like smoke in the wind
You're there, then you're gone
And I blink where I stand
And it's slipping away
The sight of your face
Like a handful of sand
And I know clear as day that I'll miss this
Cause a piece of my heart's woven in
And I wish I could take one last breath
Of the air that I breathe when you're around
Stay now, don't let me down
I'm too young to be this old and I
Turn around to leave this town
And with that every year of youth I've ever known
And with that every piece of you I ever owned
I watch the treelines disappear
And reminisce on years spent here
For the last time I look around
And wonder what I'll dream of now
Then like smoke in the wind
You were here, now you're gone
And I blink where I stand
And it's fading away
The lines of your face
Like a handful of sand
And I know clear as day that I'll miss this
Cause a piece of my heart's woven in
And I wish I could take one last breath
Of the air that I breathe when you're around
Stay now, don't let me down
I'm too young to be this old and I
Turn around to leave this town
And with that every year of youth I've ever known
And with that every piece of you I ever owned
