Welcome to The Justaride Snowboard Channel!
The goal of my channel is to provide professional information around snowboarding and splitboarding.
I'll talk about gear, board design, board maintenance, different setup options, backcountry knowledge, general riding technique and fitness tips.
I started snowboarding in the spring of '93 and ticked a few boxes along the way.
Eleven years as a hardgoods buyer at EOW, Fernie have given me a good insight into the snowboarding industry.
I'm currently representing Stranda Snowboards sales in north America, while running my own tuning business.
An Austrian ISIA level snowboard instructor qualification got me into 12 seasons of teaching snowboarding in Europe.
The knowledge gained in multiple avalanche and backcountry classes including the CAA Avalanche Operations Level 1 helps me navigate the backcountry safely.
I'm lucky enough to ride 100+ days per season, and I live for the turn!

Great content as always. I'd like to try a bit wider stance, by one mounting point, should I move my front leg forward toward the nose or should I move back leg more to the tail?
@@p2rkw depends on the board and what you want to do.
Kia Ora Lars! Love what you're doing on the channel. Recently picked up a Makrill based on your review (for jpow) but was hoping to hear your thoughts on a carving/freeride board for New Zealand. As you know we get a lot of hardpack here and terrain is definitely variable. I spend most of my time between groomers and off piste searching out new lines and navigating death cookies and ice. 178cm, 145lb, size 9.5 us boot. Appreciate your thoughts and hopefully see you back in NZ one day! Chur Andy
Have you ever ridden a Yes board with tapered underbite? Curious what your thoughts are
@@Scliff Never tried. I don’t understand it. Like, not at all.
It would be great on high end boots to have the options of buying only the shell as most of us are replacing the liner. It would be cheaper and would be less waste. The company could have liners available to buy for people who have packed their liners or warranty issues. Of course it would be a pain in the A for them to handle.
@@ernesto006 love it!!!
Tuning before I wax my boards for the season. Now I’m wondering after about how many days of riding do you like to touch up the edges? And what stones do you use when touching up during the season?
All depends on conditions and how nice of an edge I want. And on edge damage…. If it’s burred I go 200/400/600/1000. If it’s not burred, I start at the 400…. Sometimes after every ride. Sometimes after three, four days…
@ awesome, thank you for still actively answering questions on a video from quite a while ago!

Now i’m even more i doubt on witch one i want for japan 🤔 witch one would you choose for surfy turns and pow spays in that deep japow?
@@PPELSNER I wish there was a video dissecting those two boards in depth next to each other!! 😅✌️
Hi Lars, nice to e-meet again. Different thread, same topic! 😊 Just bought the Shorty 164 (local shop in France, 2022 model). Now I have two pairs of bindings: Burton Genesis and Union Ultras. I was thinking about putting on the Genesis. Would that work well (which I do hope) or do you advise me to buy an additional pair this Friday? 😉 Many thanks again for your help. Best, Peter ✌️
@@PeterBelling-q1w yeah, that’ll do. Bindings are preference. The Genesis is not very responsive, therefore very comfortable. Can’t have it all, I guess. Ride it, feel it out, then decide. Good luck!

@@Surfratglass 🥳🙂🙏
Agree with this be the best edge tunning video, the part you said about be light on diamond stones is gold, i never thought about that too much pressure been sending the microbur from one side to the other too much. I have that white sidecut ceramic stone, i will try to use without the guide at the base as you to put the bur on the right place.
Thank you so much! I just bought a jones stratos and was worried about it. Now i will just ride as is and check if it's not catch, like you suggested at your long 101. Keep posting those small tuning videos, its so helpful!
It'll be fine. I'm almost 100% certain that all their boards have an appropriate base bevel to be ridden out of the box. Never seen a Jones without bevel once....
Big appreciation from one of your 1% for showing the women's Shorty, especially because I just got the 148 this morning! I love my 4-year-old Shorty 153, but have always felt it was a bit too long for my riding style (or to be more honest, capability). I'm going to compare them same day/same run/same setup but I already have the feeling the 148 will be my "evil choice one board" too!
Ha! That is so cool to hear! Let me know what you think!!
Thanks Lars for all the content. Convinced me to buy the Shorty, and I'm absolutely stoked with it . Many thanks 🤘
@@tomc3873 awesome to hear!!! Thanks for your support!!
Hey Lars .I watched this before taking my new Shorty out for the 1st time at our local snowdome. Have to say it wasn't instant raddness, as stepping up from a 151 Peace Seeker, to the 164w Shortly. But after some adjustments on binding placements, and getting use to riding a longer board , I was starting to feel what this board is going to be capable of . So impressed with how smooth the board rides and how fast the base is ! I've definitely got some work to do on my technique, to get the most out of this board . But I wanted something different to the Peace Seeker, that will handle more drawn out turns, and that's exactly what I've got . It was on your recommendation that I bought the Shorty, and can't thank you enough 🙏.
@@tomc3873 this is so cool!! Take it out into the wild!! It’s gonna get even better!! 😉😎🙏🤙

Hi Lars, I love your channel and every video I learn more and more about the world of snowboarding. I own a Biru and I love it so I was thinking about adding another board to the quiver. Shorty inspires me a lot, although I wouldn't want the use to be similar to the Biru. Thank you very much💪🏻
@@gabrieleturelli1108 Hi!! Thank you so much for the kind words!! The Shorty and Biru would make an amazing quiver of boards!! They’re very different in how they ride, yet they both feel like a Stranda in regards to edge grip, dampening and the fast base. Don’t be afraid 😉 If you can’t find a dealer, order through my link. It will support my channel a bit and you get free shipping globally. www.strandasnowboards.com/ref/878/ 🙏🙏
Definitely one who can’t wait for the pipeliner vs cheater. Especially from an educational perspective to understand the specs in real life. Thanks so much Lars
What happens if a truly despicable person sows up and tells you that, not only are you able to ride one board, but you have only two options to choose from, Shorty or Descender?
@@nemaemanema3940 Shorty! It’s the better carver and the better floater. The lack of a tail and the overall lesser ‘freeride gnar’ vibe are both things that I would make up for as a rider. That said, the Descender is what I’m riding equally as much.
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel I still haven't decide on which one would be my next board, so far I'm leaning towards the descender as there is not much pow riding where I'm from. Love your contend keep it up please.
@ That’s a solid argument for that board. Although it floats remarkably well for a not so heavily tapered and not so set back board.
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel I know you mentioned that both boards deal well with choppy conditions, but am I wrong to think that the Descender should have the advantage in icy and freeze-thaw conditions dew to the Power Bumps?
@ yeah, but then it loses the advantage again with all the tail rocker…. That’s a tough one to say. Not sure which one would win that comp.
great insight!!!!! loving it
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, im lookig for my first splitboard. Im 5'8", 140 & have 2 shorter volume shifted boards. Nitro slash&Never summer harpoon, both like 152. Im 68&ride mostly Kirkwood & pnw; bèen on skiis all my life&boards since early 1990& still use my 158 Barfoot woody every now&then. I bought it from Chuck himself. Would you recommend the shorty 164 wide?
Also, most important, size 12 boot, euro29
@@davidsheldon1929 if you feel like you can handle the length, yes! It does ride a little shorter than its size suggests. Otherwise Biru 157, maybe?!
@@davidsheldon1929 the most important part is to go through the link in the video description to order that board! 😅 Just kidding!! But would be helpful, if you did ! 🙏 Biru is of course not as much of a pow board as the Shorty. I just suggested it because of the rest of your quiver. The 164 Shorty would be by far the longest length.
Thanks, Lars. Appreciate your quality reviews:)
just bought a shorty wide need some snow in the NE!
Hey Lars! Thanks for the comparisons. I'm looking to replace my 2019 Yes Optimistic 151, with a 256 waist as my daily driver. Love that board for how it can turn quickly and do long carves. On powder days, I always find myself in tighter trees and for groomers, I like more flowy narrower runs where I can make longer turns across the run, hit side hits, and popping into the trees. I want to work more on carving this year. I think the 157/159 Tree Surfer/Bowlrider make the most sense for me vs the Shorty in terms of nimbleness and ability to the slash. I also have a 158 Skeleton Key that I use for deeper powder as it's not nimble enough in the trees. I love powder, but in all honestly I end up on groomers at least 80% of the time. What's your thoughts on the board that best suits what I do? I'm 5'10", 165, Size 9 boots, live in Bend, ride PNW, Mammoth, and the Rockies (my snowboard dating profile). TIA!
Bowlrider is quite different from the Optimistic with over twice the taper and a much longer nose. It's much more directional and will outfloat the Optimistic without trying. Therefore riding switch isn't as good as on the YES board. For a directional rider with a focus on turning the Bowlrider can be a one board quiver. Carving is outstanding, and float will blow your mind. It's freestyle that isn't its forte, due to the not so spin friendly shape (long nose) and very directional flex. Hard to tell anybody what board is best for them.... But that's what I got.
Thanks Lars! No switch or park for me. The YES board has a big nose for its size and wasn’t too friendly for spinning either. Any reason for Bowlrider over TS? I assume the tail for more groomers and side hits.
@@powsnob04 exactly!
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel Just ordered a 159 Bowlrider and used your link. Can’t wait to lay down some turns!
@@powsnob04 Thank you for going through the link! Please get in touch and report back how you like the board!! Have fun!! 🙂
I bought the Bowlrider & love it. It’s a great complement to my Jones Flagship which with its longer side cut is less turny & more of a big mountain board
Thank you so much. Very helpful, although I am still torn. What sizes for 172 cm, 77 kg, with size 8 Driver X boots?
@@davidspear6682 depends on riding level. If you’re an advanced rider with good technique, who moves fore aft a lot through the turns, you could go 164/165. Otherwise 159.
I'm essentially your size and ride a 164 Shorty. Absolutely love it. It does feel like a lot more board than my 165 Korua Trenchdigger, but not in a bad way, it's more of a tool than a toy. The variable sidecut and flex make it a lot of fun to vary turn shapes. It made me fall in love with carving. I've subsequently bought the Korua and a freecarver 6000, but still ride it when I seriously want to carve. It makes a really good powder gun too.
I did consider the 159 Bowlrider, as it is the same width as the 164 Shorty (which is decent for size 8 boots), but the Shorty suited me better... and the titanal really is special.
@@davidspear6682 the essential part is that you use my link to order your Stranda 😉🙏 Only half kidding…, haha… Keep asking questions. Happy to help. 👍✌️
Thanks for the feedback@@TheDerekHyde How is the Shorty in bumps and tighter trees?
Great comparison! 🎉 Just got the Bowlrider…and it is superb like nothing I’ve ever ridden before. The question is…how to build my quiver around it? I’m a bit scared of the Pipeliner…
Thinking about the Bowlrider or TreeSurfer. Do you mind sharing what other boards you've ridden and how it compares? Thanks!
@@borilsopov8160 Cheater as a carver is a solid step up from the Bowlrider. Biru as a quick, nimble, freestyle inspired addition… Done! 🙂😅🙌
@@powsnob04 I currently have older Jones Explorer 161W and last years Nidecker Mellow 160W. The Mellow feels very slow and not holding its edges. The Jones grips well, but cheats with serrated edges. My Bowlrider 165 is above them all. As nimble as the Jones and it really is very calm. I’ve been on it for 4 days only this winter…but that persuaded me to replace my whole quiver with Strandas
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel I think you confirmed what I needed to hear… The Cheater it is. Though to be fair, if I get a chance to demo Korua Bullet train I may reconsider it.
@@borilsopov8160 yeah, they are special boards. The Bullet train is an interesting board. It’s kind of a mini cheater regarding material length relative to effective edge. I found it strangely boring. It feels like a tool. The titanal under the top sheet kills all vibration but also some pop. It’s just glued to the ground, which some people love! It carves like a surgical knife, but the large radius combined with the slightly dead overall feel make that a bit of a dull experience. Although the Cheater is bigger, it turns quicker and is livelier, while also being amazingly damp with that fat ash core. Worth trying both. I prefer Cheater.
I’m a big guy 6’4 240# size 12 boots and I’m looking at the K2 almanac. I like tight turns and I’m torn between the 157 (268waist side cut 7)and 161 (272 waist side cut cut 8). Thinking 161 is better but will I be giving up too much nimbleness tight carving I’m going for or will I not raven notice the difference?
@@johnnyuturn to be bluntly honest, it’s the wrong board for you! I’m 135 lbs and I rode the 157 last year. It was one of the softer boards I’ve tried…. You’ll just blow through it, no matter what length. It won’t support your weight appropriately. Great board otherwise. Forget for a moment that I’m a Stranda ambassador…. The only short/fat volume shifted board I know that will support your weight is the 157 Stranda Biru. It’s a volume shift but the core profile is traditional with a thick centre. Waist is 275 which is better for your boot size. Radius is under 7m, which is plenty nimble and agile. This is unbiased advice. In case you like that board and buy it, and you can’t find a dealer, order from Stranda with my link (free global shipping) www.strandasnowboards.com/ref/878/ I hope this is insightful for you!!
Thanks so much for the honest feedback. Biru has been on my radar and looks like a ripper. I look forward to your bowl rider review!
It’s way too narrow for you. Anything under 270mm waist is not good for your size 12. But also a great board… 🙂
This is the video I've been waiting for! Thanks Lars, looking forward to it! And looking forward to trying these boards out in about two weeks time.

Argh! Biru vs Descender was awesome but uou skipped Descender vs Shorty! The trilogy will have to wait I guess.
Hi Peter! I didn't skip that. I'm comparing the boards that can be confused through superficial similarities. That is Biru/Descender and Shorty/Bowlrider.... If you're between Shorty/Descender, the decision can easily be made just reading through board description on the Stranda homepage. The boards are vastly different. Anyhow, with the two videos you can hopefully figure it out. To compare two boards you just need knowledge about them rather than a direct video comparison. Not trying to 'be rude', but where would this end? I'm basically skipping 10.000 reviews, as any board could be compared to any other board... Feel free to reach out, if you still have trouble! I'm definitely here to help.
@ Hi Lars! Love your channel, quality content, clearly and concisely communicated. My comment was intended to be humorous, but your reply struck a nerve, specifically when it comes to “descriptions”. TBH reading the “descriptions” isn’t particularly helpful, like ever (this isn’t limited to Stranda). Not to be rude (lol) but have you read the description of the Descender? “for anyone who wants a directional freeride snowboard” and “weight is kept low to allow for backcountry freestyle riding” while Shorty is “as fun on the groomers as in the backcountry”. That’s not particularly helpful if you’re trying to decide between them. I’ve already decided after a bunch of chatting on forums (the website wasn’t particularly helpful) but certainly would have have enjoyed a video, liked it, and subscribed (even if you thought it a waste of time).
@@peterjmcgowan I guess you're right. And I guess I'm assuming too much... As in: what is actually 'obvious' to someone with less experience?! I also guess that my comment makes sense, too - as in: well, why don't I compare the Descender to the Cheater, the Makrill, The Capita Aeronaut and the Jones Flagship... the list goes on. I think more in board specs and in obvious design features than in company descriptions. That's what I meant with the homeoage. The numbers state 9mm vs. 14mm taper - that's a huge difference with a clear idea in mind: less taper = more versatility / more taper: better pow performance. Then the simple fact that you have a huge kick tail on the Descender paired with that lesser taper - again: more versatility! 9m radius on Descender / 8.5m on Shorty: more speed stability with the Descender, more fun when just turning with the Shorty. So Stranda (and every other brand out there) is trying to simplify these details. But you're right, it always sounds like "god knows what that really means!". So my take on this: Descender is the more aggressive fall line charger / freerider with allmountain versatility(less taper / kick tail) for better riders (stiff board). Shorty is the fully directional Pow Board with a better turning experience on groomers than what you can have with the Descender and more float in pow. To me those things would be obvious, and that's where I need to apologize to you! Our background in overall snowboarding experience is likely quite different. I hope this helps to understand where I was coming from. And again, I really didn't mean that as a rude comment. The written word is a tricky one.
@ I think that’s a base script for a great video! Well, depending on the audience anyways….I’m sure (as you say) this is all obvious to some. But I wonder if the people who already know everything would be half as interested in your channel as the people who want to know more? In any case, I hope the comments bump up your interaction metric ;) still looking forward to learning something from the Shorty vs Bowlrider (was seriously looking at the Bowlrider after the Tree Surfer video)
@@peterjmcgowan I'm sure that with the two videos you'll be able to make an educated decision between all four boards. I'm really trying to break things down. I also said in the beginning of the videos why I picked the two and not some other pairing. So I hope that alone puts people on a path... Yeah, the time I spend replying to 100% of the comments can't be paid by TH-cam, no matter what interaction metric they come up with. I'll never reach a level of 100% satisfaction of viewer questions. People are so diverse. Brains operate so differently. My favourite is when someone watches 1 minute of a 20 min video and then fires five questions at me that are all answered in detail in the video.... So excuse my impatience, please! It's a wild world out here :-)
Lars flexing knowledge on binding flex
@@LagmasterB #flexing 😅
@ 🫶🏼 You guys getting snow in Fernie? We are getting hit in NE Washington. 49° North/Schweitzer/Red
@@LagmasterB yup!! I’m in lake Louise right now. 4 days. First turns of the season.
I got in 2 touring days. First chairlift spinning tomorrow at 49°.
Size 13 shoes. Size 11 Burton boots.
Just taken delivery of my Biru...woo hoo...!
@@zook600 awesome! Enjoy!!
Thanks for the extensive review Lars! For deep low/mid angle pow in the trees (Canada backcountry), what bindings would you recommend on the Tree Surfer?
Way too much thinking. Any binding. Literally any! Binding and boot choice is very much subjective. Stiffer = more response. Softer = more flex, movement. Sorry, there's really no answer to that question. Not trying to be mean here ✌️🙂
Itssss jussssooo jesssarideeee jajajaja
Hello I have regular sized feet and im thinking way to much when I'm taking decisions ahah. I have ridden Deeluxe 43 boots and i felt shins pain, so a bootfitter sold me Nitro boots 41 2/3 because he told me smaller was better. I don't have as much shin pain but i feel numb after a while. What would you recommend? My front foot is 0,5cm longer than the back foot, other than that I'm 42,5/43 depending on the foot, and width seem regular to me compared to others. Im intermediate, mostly groomers and small pow. Thank you very much
Watch my boot episode #1 about the right fit. It's all in there. Then get on your way to shops an try boots with my method. Forget about Euro sizes. Try to go by Mondopoint!! Good luck!!
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel I don't know much about your channel yet but I'll make sure to watch it tonight ! Thank you very much for your help and patience !
@@cryololz nothing to thank me for!! :-) But for real, that video has everything you need. Much easier than writing it all again here 🙂 Thanks for tuning in!! This platform is helping so many people regarding so many different topics of snowboarding. I'm sure you'll get something out of it.
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel Ive watched your 3 videos on boots, they're very well made and informative, thank you very much. Sadly I don't have a lot of shops near me where I can try a lot of boots. I can try Salomon and K2 but that's about it for now... I'll do my best :)
@@cryololz that’s always difficult. At least both brands make good boots. Don’t buy too low end. Cheap boots are literally garbage. And sometimes you he expensive ones are, too 😐
Have you ridden the Jones hovercraft? If so, what are your thoughts?
Great question... because that board changed three times (Jones may not have communicated that, no idea)! I had the first ones, two of them. Loved them! Won a fun night slalom event in Switzerland on one, hahaha.... Great carving performance, amazing powder performance. Then they spooned the nose.... and that's when things went 'funny'. Spooning adds stiffness and the shaper has less control over the flex in that area. Think of a sheet of metal that flexes. Now make a table spoon of it - flex gone! So that first iteration of spoon made it very stiff, at least that's what I found. To counter that they then made it a little softer in the centre and added torsional flex... Both things, torsional flex and stiff, spooned nose decrease carving performance to a degree. For pow I never felt that the spoon added much at all. The stiffer nose, however, absorbs choppy terrain less, and personally I'm not a fan of torsionally 'softer' boards. Feels less stable to me, in particular when the nose doesn't absorb and send the vibration into the soft centre..... So I owned three Hovercrafts, and I think the first one was the best. No idea about the current one. They changed it again.
Would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the Taka!
You will hear those thoughts! Hang tight! ;-)
Hi Lars, I have the Descender, Cheater and Makrill (all thanks to your videos) and the Descender is the best board I’ve ridden in 40 seasons of snowboarding. Question, about to pull the trigger on my 4th Stranda. Split board. I’m going back and forth between the Short BC and the Descender BC. Any thoughts or recommendations? Feel like I’ll only be going into the BC for pow so Shorty is tempting but I am so in LOVE with my Descender! Buying you a coffee in advance of your advice.
Haha, thank you so much! Well, it's a matter of how gnarly you're gonna go... If you think your riding will get you into emergency exit situations that require a tail to ride out switch (from a cliff you got stuck on.....), take the Descender. If you're not getting yourself into this sort of exposure due to overall mellower terrain and lower risk tolerance, get the Shorty. That's my personal take on the two and why I'm on a Descender.
@ Amazing! Mats also recommended the Shorty. Thanks Lars! Will use your link to make the purchase.
Have you ridden the Niseko Pleasures? How does it compare to the SP? I understand its softer, would it be a fun groomer carver?
Never tried. Played with both at a trade show and thought there was zero difference.... SP is a good carver, but has limits in edge hold when it's firm or steep.
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel Awesome. May pick one up on sale for low angle groomers. 5'11, 170lbs, 8.5 boot, think I should go 156?
@@tinsley_alex totally!! 151 is just not enough....
@@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel Thanks Lars!
I forgot to ask what are your binding angles?
30/+9 on this board in this clip. Sometimes less for powder, sometimes more for harder carving on my big boards.
Split boards have an argument for camber in that it helps you get better grip with your skins when you’re climbing
@@Surfratglass 100% true!!!
I like the flat! K2 did a bunch of that for a while
Your video got me stoked for the end of the month. I'm finally going to Whistler Blackcomb for the first time, for 3 days of boarding. Watching your videos on tuning/waxing helped me learn to do it properly and save lots of money this coming season. I also get to help out my friends and save them money also. Would be sick to see you carving at whistler blackcomb (or any other mountain) one day. 🤟
