Everything has an initial startup cost. One could make more than needed bedblocks, for resale/profit, to get a zero startup on your gardening. If you only need a few, as you know, there are other options. No one I know, who has a garden, is $ ahead 😂. But it's still nice to have one.

    What's proper care?

Storage: Store the ABS mold in a clean, dry, and protected environment. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or moisture. Ideally, store the mold in a dedicated storage area where it won't be subject to damage or contamination. Handling: When handling the ABS mold, take care to avoid excessive force or impacts that could cause cracks or other damage. Treat the mold gently and avoid dropping it or placing heavy objects on top of it. Lubrication: Apply a suitable release agent or mold release spray to the surface of the ABS mold before each use. This helps prevent concrete from sticking to the mold, making it easier to remove the finished product and prolonging the life of the mold. Cleaning: After each use, clean the ABS mold thoroughly to remove any residual concrete or debris. Use a soft brush or sponge with mild detergent and water to scrub the mold gently. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals that could damage the mold's surface.

I’m 5 into my project where I’m making about 30 of these. Some recommendations: - use vegetable oil, shortening, or margarine to lubricator the mold. Motor oil is a toxic carcinogen and actually more expensive than these alternatives. - rub a thin layer of vegetable oil or shortening on the inside of the mold with a paper towel. There’s no reason to go spraying motor oil all over your yard. - Use Quickcrete 5000 in 50lb bags for 2 reasons. 1. This mold can really only hold about 45 lbs of concrete, so there’s less waste concrete to dispose of. 2. It sets in 10-12 hours instead of 24 hours so you can mold 2 of these on one day - if you are close to the minimum set time for the concrete mix, be gentle when removing the mold from the block. I broke one block by being too rough.

Dear keith, Thank you for your feedback and suggestions regarding the use of alternative release agents and Quickrete 5000 for our ABS molds. We appreciate your input and the time you took to share your experience. Regarding the release agent, we understand your preference for vegetable oil, shortening, or margarine as alternatives to motor oil. While these options can indeed be effective release agents, we have found through our 15 years of experience that there is a potential issue when storing the molds outside. Rodents are attracted to food-grade oils like vegetable oil, shortening, or margarine, which can lead to damage or destruction of the molds over time. This is why we have opted to use motor oil as it doesn't attract rodents, ensuring the longevity of our molds. However, we acknowledge that different environments and circumstances may vary, and we respect your choice of alternative release agents. It's always important to consider factors such as storage conditions and local pest issues when selecting a release agent. We value your insight, and we'll certainly take your suggestion into consideration for customers who prefer alternative options and have suitable storage conditions. Regarding your recommendation of Quickrete 5000, we agree that it can be a suitable choice for faster setting times and reduced waste concrete. We appreciate your suggestion. Lastly, we thank you for mentioning the importance of being gentle when removing the mold from the block, as it can help prevent any accidental breakage. We emphasize the need for care during this step to ensure the best results and minimize any potential damage. We greatly value your feedback and aim to continuously improve our products and services. If you have any further suggestions or questions, please feel free to reach out. We appreciate your support and look forward to serving you in the future. Best regards, Mike Gunn ABSMOLDS.COM

I'm thinking about using the red bag fence post mix (50 lb) that sets in 20-40 minutes. Also planning on adding a pinch of glass fibers, integral color mix, and wire mesh for reinforcement. Hoping to be able to make 3-4 per day as I plan on making 50+ for my garden. Do you think the holes for the rebar need reinforcement like an integral PVC tube cast into the concrete?

    • @KeithKates-nm5yr

Once the concrete cures these are very strong. You’d have to really try to break one of these segments. I think reinforcement with fibers, mesh, etc is unnecessary. These would look nice with the addition of color pigments.
