Cape Town Freediving Clip of the Week 8: Cow Sharks. Winter freediving in False Bay is the ultimate. In the middle of last week's storm, conditions in False Bay were amazing. On land it was cold and raining, but the ocean was 17 degrees and very clean thanks to the NW winds. Stephan and John jumped in at Glencairn and almost immediately had a 7-gill cow shark swim under them. You can read more ...

Pyjama Shark
มุมมอง 882 ปีที่แล้ว
Pyjama (striped) catshark are another frequently seen species by snorkelers and freedivers in False Bay. These charismatic reef sharks aren't afraid of divers and can even rub up against you as they swim past. They love cuddling up with other pyjama sharks in caves and pipes. One of their favourite foods is octopus!
Octopus

Octopuses (yes the plural sounds weird) are some of the most fascinating marine species in our oceans. They are highly intelligent and masters of camouflage. We are fortunate enough to have an abundance of these creatures at the snorkeling and freediving sites we visit.

    Completely agree! For me DNF leg kicks use a ton of O2, and aren't worth it for the thrust generated. Arm only is the way!

  • @Brandon-ch9eo

    Its a great point that you make about the uncomfortable feeling of having too much air in your lungs when dry training. That feeling goes away almost immediately when you start your dive!

  • @jodecaesteker3971
    @jodecaesteker3971 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, I get it, and already knew all that, but hyperventilation is tempting, especially for me. (But still I don't do it to be clear, I've done a proper course. I'm Aida 2) I already explained my problem elsewhere with very early contractions which are hard and frequent from the start. 50m dyn is my personal best and contractions start around 20-25m already. I want to come up at the first contraction. Every dive is like that, with or without warmups. You offered co2 tables as a training tool but that's actually more of the same nauseating stuff which makes me officially hate freediving. So what do I do? Learn to deal with contractions? Harden the f"ck up, as they say? That would mean that if I ever do 75m dyn (which I seriously doubt), I would have to stand hard and frequent contractions for 2/3 of the dive?...! That's it, I'm selling my gear... I can't train anyway these days as the pools are closed.

    • @Brandon-ch9eo
      @Brandon-ch9eo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jo, wow! Your situation sounds tough. I have worked really hard to get used to contractions. What I do is always try to maintain relaxation and comfort when Im doing breath holds or dives. When I started training, I would hold my breath until I got contractions and then I would start breathing again, even if I knew I could keep going. Then the next breath hold I would hold it until I had 2 contractions, and then I would start again. Again, my focus was to 1) relax and 2) get used to the feelings of contractions. After I was comfortable having 2 contractions, I would move up to 4. And so on. Contractions are going to happen on a dive, so learning how to relax and let them roll through me was really important. My personal best time is currently 6 minutes and I can easily hold my breath for 5. But I started right where you are. Its just a matter of learning how to relax through the contractions not trying to "harden the fuck up". I really hope you don't sell your stuff. Freediving is a cool sport and relaxation is one of the most important components of it!

    • @stephankirsten7318

      Try doing repetitive easy breathholds. They should all be in the "fun" range. Never go into the fighting stage. You want to have your body associate dry STA with fun. And smile! With time you will hopefully start enjoying them.

  • @RVIC011
    @RVIC011 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video Stephan. Did my static = 5 minutes. Not too sure how I should do the warm-up...I did a CO2 table prior to my max attempt, as this is what I've done previously and found it works for me. Will try the 3 warm-up statics with my next round: should I go for 2:30, 3:00 and then 3:30 for the warm-ups? How close to my PB should my final warm-up breath be?

    • @stephankirsten7318
      @stephankirsten7318 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      5 minutes! well done Your example is good. Or you can work with the onset of contractions. Doing a table beforehand will definitely warm you up, but if it is too intense, it will just tire you out for the max attempt. Normally we don't do the two on the same day.

    • @RVIC011
      @RVIC011 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephankirsten7318 OK thanks, I was doing the CO2 table on 2:30 holds (8 rounds with reducing intervals between the holds), then rested for about 5 minutes before max attempt. I will try do another static this week doing only the 3 warm-up breath holds - will still play around with using time vs contractions then. PS: In the vid you made a comparison to tolerating a 4-year old running around the house. Any advice on that is very welcome too🤣
