Wedding Photography: Gear I use | Part 1-Cameras & Lenses
In part 1 I discuss what camera's and Lenses I take to weddings, what I use and what would be a good start for someone getting into Weddings as a Photographer. I hope this gives you an idea of what type of gear a wedding photographer uses and the variety of tools that is needed to get the job done. Let me know if you would like a more in depth look into why I choose certain pieces for certain situations. In Part 2 I will show what I use for lighting and set-up.

I use ProGrade Cfexpress/SD cards and their card readers. Found one with a squealy AF for $1000 about 10 years ago second hand from auction. Got it serviced for $500 the next day at Nikon Ginza. Been a star performer ever since. I use it almost exclusively for live concerts where I know my distance to subject and need the fastest shutter speeds possible. Don’t use it as much as I would like since the 70-200 2.8 is the stalwart.

    My Z 24-70 2.8 developed a hairline crack in the extension! The repair was not taken as a warranty issue and is quoted at around 600 US dollars here in Sweden!🤬 I am still waiting after almost five weeks! One thing for Swedes to know is that Nikon Sweden no longer has a repair center in Sweden and sends their repairs to a service center in Estonia! Not ideal for a pro!

    You might have realized in the first segment that you could explain a little better. In the second segment you started using 'flash power' instead of 'light' which could confuse photogs. They might think of ambient light as light. Good job!

    • @dakotaxu4792
      @dakotaxu4792 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m glad someone mentioned this because I have both the Nikon 105mm f1.4 and the Nikon 200mm f2.0 and I really cannot tell the difference between the images coming from the too. Of course the 200 f2 has much greater reach BUT I just don’t want to take it out the house and after 5 or 10 minutes my hand gives out. It’s a specialized lens good for a specific shoot not everyday use. If you had to ask me I’d take a 135mm f1.8 lens out the house everyday. That comes as close to the 200 f2 as anything I can think of AND I’d take way more photos. Even in a photoshoot the 135mm 1.8 would hold it’s own. So basically the main advantage of the 200mm f2.0 over the 105mm f1.4 and the 135mm f1.8 is the reach. But how often would you use it?

    Listening to you, Steve, I hear the words I've issued for the last 6 months. I bought the 200mm f2 VR (first version) for half the price of the VII. On the Nikon Z9, it's a blast and pleasure to shoot - albeit heavy. A few things here you already know: For indoor sports, like ice hockey, the 70-200mm f/2.8 is much more useful. Yet, the players all see the shots I take from time to time with the 200mm f2 and the "Wow" words abound. I'm an amateur photographer - but I've shot wildlife, weddings, sports, dance and outdoor portraits with this lens. Like you, it literally never leaves my side most of the time. I'm going to add one other thing to what you've mentioned so far in the video: I agree, the separation, sharpness, color rendition, and smoothness of the bokeh is just the start of what makes this lens special. My friends (who talked me into a used copy of the 105mm f/1.4} - quickly realized the 200mm f2 has even more magical qualities. My Canon buddies ask if they can borrow the lens (because they love the images I generate even on the LCD with it). After shooting it side-to-side with the 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom - and the 180mm f/2.8 D screw drive lens on the D850, and the 105mm f/1.4 - there is little doubt which image comes off the 200mm f2. To my non-professional eye, the lens has the ability, shot with the correct angle and circumstance to render depth - dimensionality - approaching LEICA's dimensional lens optics. My images with the 200mm f2 breathe life - and make the viewer feel like they are there (and I got halfway through the video when you mention this same thing about 10 minutes after I wrote this). The people have depth to them (not cut outs) with the entire face (even turned) in focus. The immediate fall-off is dramatic. With ice hockey "ice portraits" - it looks like you're on the ice with the player and standing next to them. I love environmental shots with this lens. If you haven't shot it, it's hard to explain why it's so different - but most people don't see shots that look like these often, so your work stands out. If you can not "see" what this lens offers, it's not for you. For many, it's a one trick pony. For me, it's what made me fall in love with photography in the first place.

    • @stevelandphotography
      @stevelandphotography ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Steve! Is there anyway of metering the background without turning the flash off and on? Things got weird on mirrorless! DSLR you just selected Ittl fill flash and metered the background then the ambient light was perfect and the fill flash lit the faces! now with the live view it got a little weird. I think you can turn off apply settings to live view?

    • @stevelandphotography
      @stevelandphotography ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can do that. I also have one of the programmable buttons set to turn flash off for a quicker way to evaluate the ambient. It helps and is way faster if you move around a venue and the light changes. Hold the button, re-evaluate and change settings and let go. There are several ways to do it and they all work. Just which ever way suits you. Thanks for the comment and watching.

    This was very helpful, thank you! I have a question which is killing my brain, if you could please give me a tip or two, I would really appreciate it. I was in a studio today where I used a strobe light.. my issue is, the room didn't appear to be very dark at all but on the screen/ Live preview of the camera, the studio looked very dark. What can I do so the screen doesn't look so dark? Should I lower the shutter speed, to 1/60 (I had it at 200), or should I raise my ISO but that introduces noise, is there something I'm doing wrong? And is there a way I can see on the screen (live Preview) exactly what I see myself as far as ambient light comes? Or should I just turn off Live preview? Thank you in advance, I hope that wasn't too confusing.

    how to address the problem when your viewfinder/monitor screen is dark for the simple reason youre shooting at an f7 or even higher fstop number? Im in a studio where the ambient light is really dark but i have powerful strobes? Is there a way you can adjust the viewfinder to shooting like a dslr where you dont have the screen but just the viewfinder and using optically?

    • @stevelandphotography
      @stevelandphotography ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually there is a setting to change from "apply settings to live view" to OFF for Mirrorless cameras which will more act like a DSLR showing more of what your eye will see or on some the camera once a light/trigger is mounted tot he hot shoe and turned on will auto do this. Im only used to Nikon so not sure what other brands may call the setting/option. I hope thats what you were asking and helped
