pretty much the same exact thing has been said about aladdin, and as an egyptian american, i thought it was so stupid (no offense, well, kinda lol). when people say that they were meshing many different middle eastern cultures together (and some from north africa and west asia too), that fact alone is not a criticism. they failed to prove how that is harmful to middle eastern representation or to the west's perception of the region. homogeneity is not malignant on its own - it's negative when it becomes a stereotype and it's positive when it comments on how connected all these ethnicities are. i personally felt that it did the latter, because funnily enough, all the persians/levantines/egyptians/amazighs/etc. who had this critique *wholeheartedly related to the culture portrayed in the movie.* it had its problems (jasmine's sexualization, that one "barbaric" line, etc.), but the portrayal of inter ethnic unity for the sake of telling a *fictional* story was not one of them. i haven't seen raya, but i have a feeling a lot of these same points apply. ultimately, these diverse ethnicities are all called southeast asian because they share common characteristics, and the movie sounds like a celebration of that (it also allows as many people as possible to relate to it, of course).
