When you think about the choices you face as a business owner, it’s like there are millions of potential clients we could try to engage with or connect to, but we only have so much bandwidth. So how do you decide where to focus your time? Whether it’s speaking at events, appearing on podcasts, or writing articles, how do you make those decisions if not by following a niche strategy? What feels most aligned with you as a business owner?
For me, it’s about recognizing that there are seasons. There may be seasons where I focus on podcast interviews. There may be seasons where I prioritize speaking engagements. And there are seasons where my calendar is dedicated entirely to revenue-generating activities. Only you as the business owner can determine what alignment looks like for you.
That really comes down to knowing yourself-how you operate best. For me, a big part of this has been understanding my human design. I’m a manifestor, and I work like one. I have clear work sprints and rest periods. My business partner, Julie, operates differently, and we’ve learned to respect those differences. Embracing my natural design was one of the best things I ever did for my business.
It’s also about giving yourself permission not to feel guilt or shame for how you work. I went through a phase where I thought I needed to be in a work sprint all the time. But that only led to burnout. Now, I focus on staying in alignment with what’s right for me in the current season and resisting the FOMO of all the things I “could” be doing. It’s about clarity and staying grounded in what truly matters right now.
For example, earlier today, someone asked me for advice on becoming a coach-what advice I’d give based on my experience. My answer was this: Think about two things. First, what are you naturally drawn to? And second, what naturally draws others to you? If there’s an industry or area you love, then pursue it. Lean into what feels authentic.
At the same time, I truly believe in the value of personal and spiritual development. Everyone benefits from self-development, no matter what label you put on it. When we invest in becoming better humans, we build better families, better lives, better businesses, and ultimately, better organizations.
