How To PLAN A MODEL RAILWAY-Middleton Railway
When all else fails, do the meltybrain technique
I wish I bought one of these when you made this video! They’re £140 now
Y know … I may do something similar Tho perhaps a different body shell perhaps
YT has just popped up your channel... great little halt layout👍🏻
Thanks! Glad to see I’m in the algorithm somewhere! Glad you enjoyed!
The background music is not needed. It is distracting from the interesting narration.
Thanks for the input! What did you think of the rest of the video?
@@heaptoncollierymodelrailwa6011 very good l like the detail you went into.
Love this - I don’t you can get any smaller in this guage!
I don’t think so! Well with running ability
Add a bit of weight to the wagon and i reckon it'll be good
I’ve ran it song on other layouts- just think the rock of the layout over time clicked it off base
Love the hanging chain from the crane jig. Adds more movement to the layout. Great job. I would love a circle of track myself this small and running this well! Great job! Best wishes, Jules😁👍🌍🚂
Thanks mate! Adds a little bit of life I thought!
What is the wagon running around at the end?
Accurascale chaldron wagon
Danke! It is
This is certainly my smallest layout- has anyone seen smaller?
Also at 8:59 I was talking about running and had a derailment!
Smaller of the same scale or smaller in another scale?
Yes, the older stuff is fine after a few mods and a bit of weathering for me. I'd much rather have a long rake of older models compared to a few high detail new ones.
Ditto! Plus you get the fun of detailing them!
A 0-4-0 Ruston Hornsby DS165 in O gauge or the Sentinel diesel for me.
That would be great to see
One was ticked off my list just this week! The T3!! I’m so happy Bachmann are doing that one!!
Was wondering how long it would be for someone to do one!
I'd like to see the LMS / British Railways / Italian State Railways Armstrong-Whitworth 0-6-0 "Jackshaft" diesel electric shunter. Triang did a version, from 1954 onwards, as the R.152 but they had the axle spacing totally wrong. Only the body shell was correct in detail. Also the GER / LNER Y4 0-4-0T shunter. Oddly enough, the only OO RTR model ever made was the clockwork Welso Brimtoy loco, produced between 1968 to 1975. The body shell can be made to fit the 1970's / 1980's Lima American Porter 0-4-0T loco chassis, to make a reasonable Y4 shunter, but a RTR version would be nice.
Some good shouts! A Jack shaft would be great fun! Long wheelbase for a shunter too so lots of space
OO plastic bodied model railway wagons have come along since the first Trackmaster 7 plank open wagon and goods van appeared on the market, back in 1949. They made Trix and Hornby Dublo's lithographed tin plate wagons seem crap, by comparison.
The March of progress isn’t it! Good weight though I bet’
If one wants detail, the old 1980's Peco "Wonderful Wagons" kits were the best. They had working suspension springs, as did the buffers. I have one on my layout, which I've had since the 1990's.
Springs sound fun- might have to try one of them!
Its only if you are a P4 or EM modeller, are you bothered about superfine details, OO wagons just have a suggestion of the brakes under the model. Its of course made so that it can be Played With by kids, rather than handled very carefully. One problem that using any age or make of models & all mixed up is the coupling height can be miss matched or the couplings are missing! Personally I like the challenge of improving the coupling or fitting a NEM pocket. Weighting each wagon to 25g per axle really improves the ride, reduces derailing during points or shunting
Exactly it’s the best but if the hobby in my opinion- is the detailing! 25grams is a good target too
What’s a real place that has inspired you?
I tend to appreciate stock (or locos) that are a bit older, paying a fraction of the price and if I spend a bit of time adding loads or weathering it’s virtually impossible to tell the difference over new stuff from a couple of feet away. Close up camera shots are a give away but at the end of the day it’s never going to be totally convincing, close enough is good enough for me 👍
Like the thinking- I agree from a distance that match up and with work close up they can too!
*UPDATE* Bachmann did a 3mt Tank & the 43xx have been done by Dapol which means 6/10 have been made!
Just not 21 years different is it….. lol Point still stands!
Great vid, I’ve been avoiding buying older Hornby MGR wagons only because of the huge tension lock couplings… There’s nothing wrong with the older wagons once they’re weathered up, yes the newer stuff from Accurascale/Cavalex are impressive, but I honestly don’t get drawn to them in a long rake when running on the layout??? Can you change the older “D” tension locks be changed out for anything more up to date? Cheers John b
There’s conversion kits that re 3D printed that I have used for the project that I bet would fit. Like you said beyond 5 feet can you see a difference- I’m not sure
I think Airfix pioneered the slim line tension lock style coupling but this wasn't widely adopted and refined until the early 2000s (like the og bachmann 20s/08s etc) to give a more finescale look to the larger D locks. Would definitely recommend older tooling wagons though, like you say how much detail on new wagons is actually visible though EFE seems to have got the balance right with the bloater wagons.
Yeah I agree that efe are finding balance. Like Oxford rail did
Hi Oliver I hope you are For me they nothing wrong with older tooled rolling stock especially if you are on budget. I have grafar rolling stock from the 70s run just as great as rolling stock On today models they too much details which are bit costly in my opinion Half the details you are not going to see it. Wonderfully video well made. Keep safe ARP
Like your thinking bud!
I have always wanted the USATC S160 to come to OO and I’m thankful that Rapido has taken up that challenge! I would like to see more unusal locomotives and classes to come to OO like the Furness Railway A5 (N° 20 is the sole survivor) as well as some extinct or ‘forgotten’ pre-grouping / grouping classes. In terms of 009, I would like to see the TR locomotives get made (I’m not including Bachmann USA’s Talyllyn) as well as the WHR Garratts and “Russell” If we got anything else from the Caledonian Railway, LNWR or MR, I’ll be very happy
Pre- grouping is very popular! Furness 20 would be great! I could see someone doing that sooner rather than later to be fair! Russell would be fun too as you could model loads of the detail differences it’s had!
Very good concept for a small layout. You captured the spirit of the location. The 'fur' forest could be improved using some of the sea-foam or individual trees and bushes with Heki scatter. Have you thought about running the diverging line through the backdrop to offsite staging?
Thanks! Trees are a really good shout! I have! Although the point I have used is well old and didn’t work so I’d have to relay the point to do it! The layout I’m working on now (video should be out in a month or so) has solved this problem! Thanks!
LNER Sentinal Railcar
Definitely!
HS4000 Kestrel would be nice (in 00 and N) class 88 in N (I think they already make it in 00 class 85 in N gauge as well
Kestrel was done by heljan and I’m surprised it only had one run in 00. And 88 would be class!
Manning Wardle H class and others please!
Definitely! Nice to see we are getting more light railway industrial locos!
Right up my street, would be good to see more running on your micros👍 Darren
I’ll see what I can do! Thank mate!
I'd love to see Bulleid shunter 11001 produced RTR
That would be fun! My money would be on KR
My list. For UK, Class 325 Royal Mail set. Any Midland railway loco built by MR before grouping of which a least 25 built . Any loco with sales to the maximum number independent railways pre grouping be they from independent builders or existing rail company workshops, For Swiss, Ee992 yard switcher, Eem 923 hybrid yard switcher, Aem 940 hump yard switcher, Am 6/6 hump yard switcher, SOB RABe 526 FLIRT set. The Ee and Eem where both in a catalogue but the company failed before production.
Love the pre grouping & Swiss ideas! A Royal Mail set would be great and it’d be a heljan style model I think Because they tend to make weirder models
What is 009? How does that compare to 00 gauge?
1:76 scale 00 gauge in size, but using N gauge track, which is 9mm to then model a narrow gauge railway..
It uses N gauge track to model british narrow gauge. It’s still in scale with OO. 0-16.5 Gauge is the same but instead uses OO Gauge track to model British narrow gauge. It is in scale with O Gauge
Same scale just smaller distant between the rails
Hiya,,,I only really have 2 1) NER Fletcher 901 class. The most unbelievable victorian loco no one has heard of and gets zero recognition. Rapido could build it, they did a good job on the Stirling Single,, but that only gets you to York, NER 901 class did the heavy lifting to Edinburgh. When in museum condition at York O. S. Nock described it as making 'Gladstone', City of Truro, and the Stirling Single look plain in comparison!!. The only loco present at the 50th, 100th, 150th, and potentially 200th anniversary celebrations of the 1825 Stockton and Darlington opening run.
Currently it sits in the Locomotion museum at Shildon. It is beautiful, and would have a.. I want one of those looks to it similar to the Stirling Single, SECR D class etc.
2) NER BTP class (Bogie Tank Passenger), again in the Victorian Livery of the NER. Similar to the 901 class
Some great ideas! Very creative with some mega liveries too!
Hi Oliver I hope you are well Yes everyone got a wishlist One for me would be bass loco in Burton-upon-Trent as for the garrett in narrow gauge quite a lot of people would like it
That would be great! And it’d be another insutrial loco!
My grandson(12) has just enjoyed watching this video. He's recently started building his first model railway a 009-layout and has said that he wants to weather some of his wagons at some point, so he has found this interesting. He's documenting his build journey on his Dylington Model Railway channel. He's also watched your 009 videos as well. They are great videos and have certainly inspired him... Cheers James 🙂👍
I’m glad! I hope you are both enjoying this amazing hobby!
@@heaptoncollierymodelrailwa6011 we certainly are 😁👍
Nice recce, one of my favourite parts of the process. Excellent choice of industrial locos too - PI squad represent (or something)
Hahahaa something like that! Quality locos!
Great stuff!
Thanks!
Good stuff, thank you
Thank you for watching!
mine will be a static model. Did not work. Very erratic runner on DC. Non-runner on DCC. Changed decoder (different make) no different. Kerno replaced it with another, and gave some configure tips (good service). It is still very eratic, got it to go about 4 meters without stopping once, rest of the time only goes a meter or two then stops, needs another prod. Poor pickups? Loose connection inside? Mechanical jamming? Can't open it to check. Roof also does not come off. Two out of two with the same issue.
That’s a shame. I find mine needs a bit of TLC (run on the rolling road and a clean) whenever I wanna run it on a layout. Shame as they could have been soemthing mega
Hello oliver I hope you are well Yes for me flicking firebox sprung buffers pre fitted speakers are pointless to me buffers yes metal. I feel we are having detail for the sake of detail on locos and rolling. You know my feelings on the subject Keep safe ARP
Metal buffers are a good way of showing quality! Thanks for watching!
couldnt agree more about sprung buffers, its completely pointless, the forces involved in 00 are so small that they will NEVER compress unless its someones finger pushing it, same goes for firebox glow and opening smokebox door
Exactly just seems a bit naff to me!
Love the case study approach
Danke
Good video 👍 I agree with a lot of the points, manufacturers that give us a canvas for modifying/personalising will always do well One huge bug bear for me is when you get 3d printed bodies that have a specific loco nameplate printed as part of the body…they’re not as good as the plates from LRS
Yeee exactly for me that’s the most fun! I agree! The only one I do is the 1361 which has a number plate! That’s not too bad as it was fictional but annoying to change!
Tried something a bit different this week! Did you enjoy it or prefer my modelling videos?
Amazing work. Bernie
Much appreciated bud!
Very impressive rust effect!
Danke! I was quite happy with it!
Just received mine! Same livery as yours. Love what you have done to your loco!
It’s a nice livery! Thank you ever so much!
Balls, this is really clever. It may be lacking in "operations" in terms of shunting cars around, but it's awesome for displaying things, or if you added an extra module or two, you could simulate a larger operation. In a micro layout, I find that less is more when it comes to trackwork, or it gets overly crowded. Over here, there was the "Tandy Center Subway" which ran all of 1.1 KM and had two single-track termini, and a passing area in the middle with stops. It could easily be adapted to something like this, especially as a seaside tramway.
Woah that tramway sounds fun- some research is needed on that! Extra modelules would be a fun thing to bring in! Good thinking!
Looks great! I think the two different ballasts look pretty good, like the track has been relaid at some point.
Ohhhh smart. Not thought of that!
