First SIV, Paragliding Oludeniz, May 2024
This was my first SIV and with hindsight was at least 4 years overdue.
I went with Lee Tryhorn's Free Flight Academy (www.freeflightacademy.com) as he came highly recommended. Paying that forward I too cannot recommend him enough.
This video is a bit long, even for me, but half of it is SIV manoeuvres for which I have included Lee's instruction over the radio and some explanation of what I was doing most wrong to help make sense of it.
00:00 to 03:30 Buses, Tickets and taking off
03:30 to 08:10 is the SIV
08:10 onwards is flying and watching some acro
There's lots that is not in the video:
I didn't mention the web page listing the launches and their wind status:
shmfethiye.kapadokya.edu.tr/en/
but this is not always updated so the best option is to walk into Sky Sports halfway down the main street in Oludeniz and ask them if the launches / cablecar are running.
I also didn't mention the private buses which drive all the way up to the launch, useful when the cablecar is not operating for any reason. To catch one of this simply wait in one of the bus stops on the route, wing on your back and whenever a bus passes with an empty seat they will stop and ask if you want to hop in. Again they will stop at the cablecar ticket office anyway because you need to buy a launch pass but if not taking the cablecar you don't need to buy the 150TL ticket. However, the cost of the bus to the launch is also 150TL or just to the cablecar is 30TL. You can expect loud Turkish pop music for the entire journey too :-)
Life vests were supplied by Free Flight Academy for the SIV and Lee conducts the courses from sitting in the safety boat, so if there is a reserve deployment Lee can get to you quickly.
If you are just going to practise on your own then you can rent life vests by the day from Sky Sports. If you do deploy a reserve and end up in the water then local safety boats should be on hand to help and it is my understanding that they are not allowed to charge you for fishing you out of the water...
However, they will rescue your equipment too and the charge for getting that back is 80 Euros! and you'll want to pay that quickly so you can wash the salt out ASAP.
I could write pages on the SIV and what small and big things I learned form it...but basically I learned loads of stuff that I already thought I knew.
Honestly I had a reasonable idea of where to look, what brake to pull, how and when to weighshift, what to do with my legs etc...and yet i barely did one of those things properly! Guided practise in a safe an encouraging environment is what's needed and Lee provides all that in spades and with (mostly) good humour.
I say mostly because Lee has an extensive back catalog of the worst dad jokes ever. Seriously, you've been warned.
Aside from that? the whole experience was nothing short of amazing...
And what a place Oludeniz is; nice people - both locals and the guys on the SIV and Acro courses, top knotch kebabs (there was other food but who cares :-)), smooth air (once over the water anyway) and the Agean(?) has shades of blue that need to be seen to be believed.
I'm definitely going back, only question is when?

I've not had many good flying opportunities recently so I know my skills are a bit rusty, hence when I do fly I tend not to use the camera and concentrated on the flying instead. but this one was supposed to be all about the video; I wanted a timelapse of the sunrise, footage from the bike and the hike up but i was twarted by rain on the ride there and a complete lack of energy on the way up. Been so long since I last did something worthy of a video that I thought it time to post something. Actualy this one is from later last year, Emil from www.hongkonghikenfly.com asked me to combine my footage with his. I was pretty pleased with the result but somehow forgot to upload it until now. Hong Kong Bike n Fly 😉

A few brief outings for the Little Cloud Urubu over the mid autumn holiday weekend...and I actually bothered to take some footage on the bike too. We're coming towards the end of typhoon season so the winds are either non existent or all over the place hence flying our only proper Northerly and Westerly sites - Pak Tam Au and ShekO respectively, plus Lantau.

I took a couple of opportunities to fly ShekO west side at the end of July and in doing so managed to snag the leading edge of the Phi Allegro. The Launch from the west side is pretty easy but rarely used so there are plenty of obstacles, That's no excuse though; conditions were perfect so I was rushing to get airborne. After 6 weeks grounded by rain or wind or both I took the first good weather opportunity, had a day off (Wednesday 22nd June) expecting to Hike and Fly the entire Pat Sin ridge to myself. Well, I did have the ridge to myself because everyone else had the good sense to go to Lantau. Interestingly I weighed myself fully kitted out carrying 3L of water as I left home (110kg). I obviously drank all...

Agost and I hiked to sunset peak, twice! First flight was cloudy but with good wind, second one had no wind and started spitting with rain as we set up. Sky was pretty clear so we took the risk. Struggled to get the wings overhead and not much lift to be had but great fun regardless...and good exercise, I can't understand why I'm still fat?! (anyway, time for a beer)
First Flight in 2022 - a reasonably early start at Shek-O with the ridge to myself for a while.

It was all ridge lift, not much height to be had but air was surprisingly smooth for a morning. The ridge closer to D'Aguilar had more bubbles, you can see the Tandem wings moving about a bit more. There it's a little more sheltered from what was a true north wind and it's a bit further back from the sea. Once over at D'aguilar the lift was smooth again but very gentle, really nice conditions s...

After a break enforced by poor weather - well it is typhoon season - back in the air during a couple of weeks in the middle of the month. True wind ranged from WSW to ESE but strong local conditions at Lantau's South facing ridge trumps the prevailing wind and creates some great conditions. I have finally invested in DaVinci Studio 17 which means I can edit 4k at 60fps directly. Most of this vi...

Buddhas Birthday, 19th May. Reasonably strong wind plus first inklings of thermals late morning made for a lifty but slightly punchy conditions. I had my allegro repaired during covid so I bought a little cloud Urubu in the meantime…madness I know…but I have since gone back to the allegro. Turns out I had learned to love the extra feedback. The allegro is fast and agile too and the big ears are mental but the whole thing is also predictable which builds confidence. Have fun and post some videos once the weather breaks👍🏻.

    Can I ask, do you have any tips on launching the Allegro X Alps? Just got mine a few days ago and the 2 main lines per side make launching it kind of weird... Haven't quite figured it out yet... Best so far seems to take the inner A-Lines only?

    • @completespaz1873
      @completespaz1873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congratulations on your new wing!Ah yes, it took me a bit of time to get that dialled in. First of all the line layout while not hooked in makes GH a real challenge. I rarely do much more than shake the lines out before hooking in. Once hooked in I have found the only thing that works for me is to hold all 4 A’s evenly. Just using the centre A’s doesn’t give connection / control of enough of the wing surface. I use other hand on both rear risers so it’s easy to kill if necessary. In strong wind I will grab the rear risers high on the lines otherwise it can be hard to keep the wing tips on the ground. Because it is lightweight I find it comes up and overhead quickly but without any nasty tendency to drag at 45° or anything so once you get it right it’s easy to be confident at launch. Stick with it buddy, and take it easy and I’m sure it will click really soon. If you’re at all like me it will be because you’re a little apprehensive on the new wing, once you relax and lock in the muscle memory launching will be a pleasure… ;-)

      Thanks for your comment.👍 I upgraded from an Eden7 which is a great wing but was never quite as precise as I wanted it to be. The AXA feels very precise and the line arrangement makes it fast on SB and gives a very efficient big ears. Really easy to launch too so long as you hold all 4 A’s. Hope it works for you too😁. Pete

    • @completespaz1873
      @completespaz1873 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JorgeParagliding haha, interesting. I looked at your videos so I suspect Ziad has some influence for you also😉. The Eden is a great wing and a very good progression from an A or a low B. The AXA has a different character but if you are comfortable on the Eden 7 then you should have no trouble adjusting to an AXA. I was also a bit light on the Eden, the weight ranges of the Phi suit me better…and a bit of a diet too😖😁. For the sake or argument tho I do have 3 issues with the Phi: 1. Buy the GIN Concertina Compress Bag, the wing just comes in a very simple bag. 2. The material is light and fragile. I ripped the leading edge on a twig without even knowing it and I was being very careful. 3. The lines 😖😖😖😖. I love the layout but I have yet to unpack and set up without knots in the lines. As for davinci resolve, I’m really just a half-baked amateur, I just watch TH-cam ‘how to’ videos. Resolve works great unless you want to handle 360° footage or >30fps. For ~€300 Studio has a few more features but right now they are giving away their SpeedEditor keyboard for free. I’m not sure how to use it yet but it looks good🙄.

      ahhh. so sorry for such a late response. I rarely check youtube, usually on facebook. been grounded for the last 3 weeks so I'm probably less than 10 hours on the wing but i feel I have just slotted into it straight away. I would describe it as immediate and responsive, it turns on a dime as they say. risers are great but they mean you have only one option for big ears. huge or huge...excellent descent rate for a simple maneuver. speed is impressive especially on speedbar. Only caveat I would offer is the size of the wing. I'm within a few kg of the top of the range but have read a few comments that it climbs better if you are closer to the middle or a bit below. I have noted other pilots on 777 queen and iota's climbing a bit better but honestly that could just be me and my crappy skills.
