(8) WHY I Bought a Villa in Sicily & Left The UK? Turning Dreams into Reality in Italy - My Journey!
Welcome back to another exciting week at my Sicilian villa renovation! This episode is packed with progress, from opening up those old metal gates to finally being able to park my car in the garden, which is a huge help as I bring in tools and materials for the ongoing transformation. 🌳🚗
Morning Routine & DIY Prep 🍯🥣 I start the day with a delicious breakfast-granola, cold yogurt, a mix of fresh berries, and a drizzle of local Sicilian honey. It’s a small taste of the amazing produce Sicily has to offer! After fueling up, I dive right into the work by raking the overgrown areas around the gate so I can finally swing it open fully and drive into the garden. A little WD-40 on the hinges and locks helps to get everything moving again. ✅🔧
Exploring the Garden & the Journey to Palermo 🚙 Once I’ve parked the car inside, I take a moment to show off some of the beautiful trees around the property 🍊🌿. Then, it’s time for a quick refuel at the local petrol station before heading off on a scenic drive to Leroy Merlin in Palermo to pick up some much-needed DIY supplies. 🛠️
You’ll get to experience a time-lapse road trip through the breathtaking Sicilian countryside-think rolling hills, sunny beaches, and coastal views. 🌄🌊 I also give you a glimpse of what Leroy Merlin has to offer, from power tools to beautiful tiles and BBQs. Let me know if you spot something you'd love for your own home! 🛒🧰
The Water Well Mystery 🕵️‍♂️💧 After returning to the villa, I focus on investigating the back garden water well. Using supplies from Leroy Merlin, I create a makeshift tool to measure how much water is inside and how deep the well goes. It turns out, the well is around 20 meters deep with 2 meters of water-meaning I’ve got a potential 565-769 liters of water! 🌊 With Sicily’s intense summers, this discovery is fantastic news.
Fitting the New Postbox 📮 To end the day, I fit a brand-new postbox I bought from Leroy Merlin on the front wall. Little touches like this are starting to make the property feel like a home, bit by bit.
DIY Recap & What’s Next: Throughout the video, I share my thoughts on the progress made so far and talk about the exciting tasks still ahead in the renovation process. There’s a lot of hard work ahead, but every step brings me closer to turning this villa into the perfect Sicilian retreat. 🏡✨

Must have been a great relief to find adequate water in the well. Still, Id put rainwater collectors on your rooftop and have a patio in the shaded garden instead. the heat coming off the rooftop would be unbearable even with an 'umbrella' here and there.

Congratulations on the new home. I hope you will be very happy there. So is your well an artisanal well or are you harvesting rainwater? Having lived in a dry and arid climate before I know how vital water is. A colleague lives on an island and when they built their home they had to ( by local authority regulations) include rain harvesting plans before they got planning permission and were issued with a building permit. They have massive cisterns and a UV light filter that all water passes through before consumption. It is also checked annually by the local water authority. Who knew there was so much to water? Certainly not me to this degree. We just had the well water that we used for the garden and cisterns that we used for drinking and cooking etc. Water....💦 needed for all functions of daily life in so many ways. Um we are suffering from an atmospheric river system here this weekend and are flooding... sigh😅

Hi..I am Wanda. Did you take the well water to be analyzed? Maybe you can drink it and wash yourself, without asking the Municipality for it. I live in Tuscany, Firenze. Here the water is very expensive. I don't know what is the price i Sicilia. Life is not so expensive in Sicilia: food etc...but there is not so much water...Maybe you can find out...Welcome in Italia

I really enjoy the progress that you are making. I know that in the last video you indicated the amount of water that you had, and that you might be using some for the garden, to that end, have you considered some rain collection barrels, specific to the garden. I live in the US, Connecticut to be precise, and while we don’t have any issues with water, we still like to do our part to save water. Knowing that your annual rainfall will be around 20”+/- during the winter months, you might want to consider something . We use a 1000L IBC tote tank that we were able to pickup for free. It was used to transport vinegar, so it is food grade. You might find a place that has them for free or at a reasonable price. New they cost about $500. Well i wish you loads of luck on your adventure and look forward to seeing more - Rob Skeffington

I live next door to someone with an overbearing pine tree and although they are stunning looking trees they are a nightmare when they shed their needles and pinecones, so very messy. Might be worth thinking about chopping it down or at least cutting back. Just a kind suggestion. Great vlogs and I wish you the best 👍

In that area San Vito Lo Capo is a very nice (but a bit too touristic) town to visit, better off season, but take care of the speed camera at the entrance of the town. Another place to visit is Marsala, where you can visit Florio and buy some liquour wine. Nicely, made famous out of Sicily by John Woodhouse, a merchant from Liverpool
