Video collection of WWII era Superheterodyne vacuum tube radios (and others) that I've given a new lease on life.
RCA Model 80 - 1947
I bought this radio when I was a teenager and have tucked it away for 50 years. Finally in 2022 I decided to bring it back to life. Along with the usual cap and resistor relacements, I had to restring a dial that was functioning in reverse, replace and IF can (transformer) and learn how to use my Heathkit T-4 to trace the FM signal and identify 2 bad tubes that I replaced. Enjoy!

As a Laurier Graduate, the radio's name, Majestic Laurier, called out to me! In 2021, this radio was refinished, recapped and out of spec resistors replaced. Looks way better in my living room than the landfill.

This 14 tube powerhouse radio is very special to me as it was manufactured the same year as my Mom was born. The 2022 restoration involved refinishing the cabinet, recapping and repairing various components of the chassis, adding a 3.5mm jack and reproducing waterslide labels. Enjoy!

A very nice and I should think quite rare little radio. Well done on the restoration.
That odd tap on the volume control is a loudness tap to give frequency compensation at lower volumes (generally a little bit of bass boost and also sometimes treble). That's one heck of a power transformer!!!! What a wonderful radio!!! Quality build throughout.
Thanks for the info on the volume tap Douglas! Makes sense.
Pretty cool! I’ve got the exact same model, belonged to my grandparents in Regina. Still works too! A little worse for wear, it’s missing the CKNX button and the rear cover. The fabric is all intact though. Always been curious, what’s a ballpark cost for a cosmetic restoration on one of these? I’d like to hand it down to my son when he’s older. But heck if I know lol.
I'm in Ontario so shipping here and back would be expensive. I suggest that you look for a reliable furniture restoration shop near you. Thanks for reaching out.
I would call this the Duesenberg of radios. Very magnificent and grand in its look and quality. Congratulations on a very fine effort. All the best from Cape Breton Island, Canada. 🙂
Thanks for the message Mary. It is a beuatiful beast!
Astounding restorations. I wish radio companies would get back into wood cabinet designs --- and get far away from the current rectangular black and silver boxes.
Nice set. Love the wood choice of these older SC radios !
I really like the old radios with wood and veneer cabinets. Companies making radios these days should look back in time for new inspiration. Plastic cabinets may be cost effective to them, but all that shiny black and tiny cabinet sizes doesn't make me want to buy.
great
Great job. Absolutely beautiful radio, well worth it.
Incredible..
Do you know Mr Carlson ? He restores electronics & has a TH-cam channel...I beleive he is also in Canada..
No I do not know him but, I do know of him and his incredible work.
Hey I was wondering if you could help me diagnose an issue with my JK96. It's volume randomly jumps around usually going very loud. Also when I tune the volume dial it jumps between extremely loud or extremely quiet. There is a sweet spot but it usually never lasts. If you know what could be causing this any help is much appreciated!
Have you tried a known reliable 6SQ7? Without seeing it, I'm only speculating.
PS. I assume you have recapped this radio before playing it?
Accidenti , quant'è bella !
Grazie mille.
I sure would like to have a vintage radio collection like yours. It's hard to find anything modern but small, cheap, black plastic radios for sale these days, and I know of no one nearby who could restore a vintage radio if I bought something nicer at a flea market.
That certainly is a beautiful looking radio. And a very nice restoration.
Beautiful unit. how did you deal with the bias batteries? Thank's Gene
Thanks for your comment. See antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=434052 with regard to how I've been dealing with bias cells.
Can you turn up sound little.
That looks like it’s about the size of an old bread box turned up on its end. Nice tone.
Wow amazing job! Great work! I’m over on the west coast (Vancouver area) and and recently found the exact same 160l model radio. I haven’t dug into it yet, but when I do I’ll probably have questions. I wonder if this is a Canadian specific model
Thanks for checking it out Alex. From what I've read, there were factories in Rochester NY and on Geary Ave in Toronto. Some models were specifically Canadian but exactly which I have not yet been able to determine. Good luck with your 160L, it is a quality radio with incredible sound once restored.
I would like to find one of these higher end models. I came across a 450M that I purchased, but so far no luck finding one that grand.
By far my favourite (so far). I'm sure your 450M will sound great once you get it up and running!
This old radio will still remind me of this 2012 online video game called Doors.
Very nicely done.
Thank you for checking it out!
@@glennsvintageradio I have just got into this hobby myself. I can’t really refinish the cabinets, but I’ve been doing the electrical restoration.
More sound please.
Awesome restore of a beautiful looking radio. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching.
Nice work on the radio! OBS Studio and DaVinci Resolve. Both are free. Please look into them as watching you video your computer screen is ridiculously painful!
Thanks for the tips!
Great job on that cabinet and chassis. She’s a looker!
You do amazing work!! Do you sell any of your radios, if so please pass along your website/location.
Thanks for asking. I post one on facebook marketplace every few months if my collection gets out of control. ie) when my wife tells me enough :)
@@glennsvintageradio great, I’ll keep an eye open for any future listings
What was that radio website on the internet you used to receive anything in the world? Is it free, or with a fee?
Radio Garden. There are free and pay options I believe.
