Great all time surfer. I think if he had spent less time tweaking his fins and boards he would have scored a World championship or two, late 70s, early 80s. A title he would have thoroughly deserved.

Some of the still shots and video clips of Shanes style reminds me a lot of Keith Paul who was someone a bit older and a little before Shanes time and also somewhat of a rebel. Both great surfers…

He was made to ride a thruster and so far ahead of his time, the fact he could ride those single fins soooo good really highlights how good he was.

I've surfed when Mike was out.... many times. No contest "free surfing" ??? I've never seen anyone work Sunset better. From peak to Val's reef and back out to the point over and over and over like he was the only guy in the water when there's 250 guys out...... ALL rippers and PROS. There's no kooks out when Sunset is over 10' with bigger sets. Mike knows that wave better than ANYONE I've ever seen.....

Those rare incredible early 70’s into the 80’s all those blokes from all over the world are ICONIC…. Loved all those SHREDDERS!!!! The style was fluid & powerful an smooth….. so many to mention it’s crazy… my memories of ALL OF THEM….. stoked that I got to witness them…. And the movies made…5 SUMMER STORIES!!!!! I had the privilege of surfing with Mark and his son at the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia around 2000 his son accidentally dropped in on me, and Mark gracefully paddled over to me and apologised. I told him it was an honour to be dropped in on by the legend's son hahaha . He's a very humble guy and I was very lucky to see first hand how this "professional surfer" surfed well after his heyday.

I remember seeing the ‘snap heard around the world’ on TV then seeing as the cover of TRACKS magazine I believe it was. I was never a huge fan, until I read his book and that changed everything. So open and honest
