The History of Epirus Empire : Every Years (1205-1479)
The Despotate of Epirus was one of the Greek successor states of the Byzantine Empire established in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 by a branch of the Angelos dynasty. It claimed to be the legitimate successor of the Byzantine Empire during the subsequent struggle for Constantinople, along with the Empire of Nikeia and the Empire of Trapezus; its rulers briefly proclaiming themselves as Emperors in 1227-1242 (during which it is most often called the Empire of Thessalonica). The term "Despotate of Epirus" is, like "Byzantine Empire" itself, a modern historiographic convention and not a name in use at the time.

Epirus was a cool country. Very long history from ancient times to the late middle ages. Great video, lots of details! As a history nerd. I love it!!
you probaly think it was greek but it was not
@erdetkertusha8806 wasn't it an ancient Illyrian culture that was in Yugoslavia Albania and West Greece territories? I know only left nationality is Albanian. But after the Rome conquered the whole Balkans the Hellenic people had a huge influence in Balkans and in Asia Minor. And because of that Albania have no sister nationality. See? I'm not stupid.
@@erdetkertusha8806 The dynasty that ran it was a long time Byzantine Greek noble family with blood ties to the rest of the Empire. Albanians formed a large part of the population especially after the 1300s but they never controlled the Despot of Epirus. You are reading modern biased Albanian sources then cause Byzantine sources make it clear it was ran by Greeks/Romans while Albanian and Vlachs tribes were migrating into the region.
@@obamacare_grucha Yeah you are, sucking up to some judgemental guy online who is clearly looking for a fight. Albanians to the north, Greeks to the south. Epirus had influence from both it is clear, but it's Greek since antiquity in language, culture, trade and it was part of the same empire the rest of Greece was, for millenia. Ancient Greek cities can be found all the way up to middle Albania like Apollonia, so no, Greeks did not start influencing the region after the Romans came, Illyrians were always confined to the north, outside Greek territories most often than not, being a geopolitical enemy of the rest of the Greeks but also an important shield to them from the barbarians of the north. Nevertheless, it is not even clear whether the Albanians have anything to do with the Illyrians at all so...do not concede what is not certain just for the sake of being likable. Truth is valuable.
@@erdetkertusha8806the despotate of Epirus was Greek and it was one of the byzantine/eastern roman rump states controlled by Greeks🇬🇷

Byzantine empire *
Look up what Byzantine Empire means and why it's used. Your correction is pointless, like saying "No that's not Judeah, it's Israel" bringing in modern terms to describe a state before the term was invented. Greeks called themselves Romans even 150 years ago.

Beautiful video I love Byzantine empire
If you want to use this name I think most accurate is Byzantion which was present in numerous sources.
@@user-sc5iv2rp2tbyzantion is the old name of the city NOT the EMPIRE
@@hopeundertheblacksun Read Anna Komnena and Choniates and then come again here about the use of the term Byzantion in middle age Greek literature. Anna Komnena more explicitly uses in the first chapters the beautiful term Βυζαντινώθεν=in the geographical direction of the city of Byzantion. Choniates names his work "O city of Byzantion". I could write for hours. Wolf did not imagine the term out of thin air, he read it numerous times in the sources.
@@user-sc5iv2rp2t did you even read my comment. I just said how byzantion is an old name of the city. It's not the name of the empire
@@hopeundertheblacksun i understood what you said, my initial comment was that in the sources we see a Cosmopolis term used for the state like Rome was the Roman Empire, or Athens was the whole of Delian League etc. They do it for Byzantion too.

This is (I'm sure accidental) Julian the Apostate, Jovian and Valentinian erasure - they should all be right between Constantius II and Valens; also incorrect too because Julian conquered back large swathes of Gallic and Germanic land in the Constantius II map I'm seeing - great work on the timeline despite the oversight.

Having learned a lot about byzantine history the past few years, i have to say, they weren't this shining beacon of civilisation being threatened from foes on all sides. Post heraclius and the arab conquests, They were a decaying corpse of an empire ruined by the most toxic culture of court intrigue in all of history. They had all the resources and plenty of opportunities to reconquer and thrive, but the byzantine state was so resistant to getting anything done at all. Only basil the 2nd managed to make it function properly in those 600 years.
They had victories all around their frontiers in the Macedonian renaissance though. The empire from 950-1050,was far from decaying,it was largest and wealthiest European empire atm
@hopeundertheblacksun they took back antioch and gained some bits here and there, but compared to previous roman campaigns and other empires campaigns at the time its quite sad. An earlier rome would have used the opportunity of the collapse of the abbasids to retake the levant and even egypt. The byzantines retook a few cities, and that was it. They even did raiding campaigns further south which is just sad to see the "romans" stooping to that level.
@@ziggytheassassin5835 bruh. They conquered Crete, they conquered Bulgaria, vassalised Croatia, then campaigned in Syria and also conquered Armenia proper by 1025 AD. The Byzantine Empire also crushed the Kingdom of Hungary under Manuel I and secured many victories all around. You have to realise that no other empire in Europe was stacking so many Ws consequently lol. Even Rome itself got sacked by Saracens in the 9th century, the "Holy Roman Empire" was that powerless in Italy(the region where it claimed it legitimacy from).
@@ziggytheassassin5835 "earlier rome would have retaken Egypt"...? Yeah? Because they had more resources? Byzantium in the 10th century didn't even have 20% of the resources of the ancient empire
@hopeundertheblacksun half of that happened under basil II. I specifically said that only he was great enough to make the horrible byzantine system actually function properly for a time. And look at what happened after he died. It just went straight back to self destructive intrigue and decline.
