Man I love that plinth! I have a Dual 701 I was going to design one like that with the rounded corners! Did you make it or buy it?
Thanks. This plinth was made by a commercial company in Europe. It was made from solid plywood and painted& polished to piano glossy white. As a 12" plinth for two tonearms with interchangeable tonearmboards it is quiet heavy but that´s part of the game.🙂
I have a pair of (made in January 1967) Pioneer CS-701A speakers. The 12" drivers have been damaged, and I am looking for a pair of great-performing, factory replacement drivers (Pioneer part # 30-721F) or an upgraded aftermarket driver that will fit in the tricky-sized Pioneer cabinet hole. It is common to find old factory speakers but they always need to be re-foamed, which I am trying to avoid. Any suggestions?
Hi, I share your opinion. New old stock chassis or chassis in other used speakers may all have the same damages - more or less - depending how much sunlight they have seen in their life. Mine seem to be fine so far, the foam is soft, no damages. It will be difficult to find replacement chassis that match to the 701-A´s . These Pioneers do not have a significant financial collector´s worth - I guess , any investment in parts or work as refoaming e.g. won´t make sense. Easier to look for another pair of 701 with functional chassis... just my 2 cents... Enjoy the music!
If I were a billionaire I’d still buy this system over a million dollar system 👍🏾
Wow - thanks so much for your comment!☺
Well thought out room and great equipment.
Thanks!😀

What do you think of the Werner Jagusch crossovers? Do you recommend them?
I purchased my model 19's in around 1978, powered them with a class A, Sansui model 33,000. Incredible sound, thank you for sharing these beauties.
The Abbey Road monitors were actually Altec 605 drivers, not the 604E.
Stunning bit of kit I have the goldring version but totally stock
Hi. I just came across your channel while researching the Altec Model 19. I read in one of your replies here that the Model 19 is your favourite and is more an all round speaker. I listen mostly to jazz from the 50s to 60s era. I was wondering based on your experience would a duplex 640 type or a Model 19 suit my listening tastes better? Thanks
Hi Nick, all I can tell you is based on my personal experiences with Altec Lansing speakers & chassis in top original condition or restaurated if necessary. I have a bunch of different Altec Lansing speakers, classic Jazz music is my main but not only hobby. If you take a look around vintage speakers you come to the classical duplex speaker chassis 605 and 604 and their later sisters & brothers. I own the 604E and planted it in a new build utility cabinet ( you may have seen in my other videos). Some people say the 604E is kind of a holy grail, it is quiet expensive today and it isn´t easy to get a real good pair, for small money, even if you search worldwide. Concerning the matching cabinet the Altec 620 cabinet will reduce the remarkable lack of bass/ deep bass. A lot of owners use this 620 cabinet, it has more volume than the smaller ones. Others use additional subwoofers or Ripol speakers to substitute the low frequency spectrum. In my ears the x-overs are another sensible theme with the 604 - I use individual x-overs made by Werner Jagusch in Germany. There are alternative x-overs out there ( Markwort, Soundlabs etc.), I did not try a lot of them but anyone has to judge with his own ears, I guess. I would like to point out that the matching Altec Lansing x-overs are not the best choice. While the 604E reproduces wonderful brillant highs and nearly perfect mids and good higher bass frequencies with a lot charme, glow and live like stage, the deep bass is missing. You may correct this problem, but it leads to additional costs and more equipment in your audio chain - not anyone likes that. The 604 are best for vocal music, classical chamber music and smaller jazz combos. The Altec 19 speakers give bass- oh yes - they reproduce any style of music very well. I don´find any major problems. They are allrounders to my ears. The aluminium horns are not ringing in my ears ( stay critically to any writer if you read about this "bug" in the web!) The only negative point: the model 19´s are big as fridges and need some space placed in a room. Simply try to hear the different Altec speakers live & with music you know very well.... before you make a decision and go on the search for buying... All the best, Joerg - by the way: the Sin Audio 300B valve tube mono amps deliver around 2x 7Watts max ;-)
Fuck yes
Can you tell us more about the build?
Hello from Germany to Buffalo, Cameron! You will find all ingredients of the shown speakers in the added text. I experimentated with different Altec Lansing stuff in different and unusual combinations based on the AL 612utility cabinet replicas that Mr. Anderson, Texas built for me. Version 1) Originally these cabs were made for my AL 604-16 E Super Duplexes. You find a building slide show video of this version -with more details- in my other videos ( th-cam.com/video/xIL87CTrHOU/w-d-xo.html ). Version 2) The 604E sounded very nice so far but I tried to get some more deep bass and installed an AL 421LF chassis to the cabinet, found a pair of 1285-8B crossovers and added the 811B horn with adapted 802-8G compression drivers - you see & hear the result in this video. Version 3) I sustituted the 421LF with a pair of 3156 woofers - but it failed to my ears. Version 4) My last version of experimenting was 421LF + 811B + 802-8G + 1285-8B, adding a Ripol Subwoofer ( 2x 12" woofers) in a separate cabinet, ampilified by a separated subwoofer DSP amp. The result at all was amazing. The possibility to get individually more or less deep bass sound on one hand was a big step forward, but on the other hand it didn´t feel right on my way to keep the audio chain simply and as far as possible near to the sound of the time period of my gear. So I stepped back to version 1. My AL 604E will get a workshop check & service and get re-magnetized in the end of this year. If you´ll have any further questions, feel free to ask. All the best, Joerg
Amazing thank you. I’m currently building a version of these, using a 612 cabinet, Faital Pro drivers and a Martin Klug h808horn.
@@cameronrector178 Great project. I am still in search for good performing costeffective woofers as an alternative to AL/ GPA for a similar speaker project - the Klug horns are well known and quality products. Which compression drivers do you have in mind? Faital lists only drivers beginning at 900Mhz. Which crossovers do you plan to use. Any answer will be helpful to my own following project. Joerg
Yours are beautiful. I’ll be using the Faital HF10AK and the Faital 15PR400. I’ll cross around 800hz.
Thanks for the details, Cameron. I´ll do some thinktank work ;-). I´m very interested to see a video as far as your job will be finished...
Dear Joerg, fab work on the Lenco… is this something you plan to do professionally? May I ask the reason for preferring Lencos over Thorens 124 or Garrard 301/401? I am asking so I can learn (i own Voyd and Pink Triangle but I know nothing about these vintage decks that many seem to prefer, hence the naive questions!) Thank you
Hello Christos! Excuse me - I am not able to answer with two sentences... ;-) If you are really interested in IWD vintage turntables, there is a wonderful book and compendium to get into theme. Joachim Bung, collector and conaisseur wrote a kind of "standard": www.joachim-bung.de/en/ I had a long audio journey with a lot of different turntables ( direct drive, belt drive & idler wheel drive). In the end I had to agree to those audiophiles who claim that a good serviced vintage idler wheel (IWD) driven turntable may reproduce a vinyl record with high dynamics more live-like than any other drive concept. A lot companies in all countries built and sold idler wheel turntables until the late 70´s ( the vinyl ages). It was the usual drive construction these times. Think of PE, Dual, Elac, Braun, Garrard, Thorens, Pioneer ( PL6/7), BSR, Collaro, Neumann and the famous broadcast/ transcription by Commonwealth, Rek-o-cut, Fairchild, RCA, Western Electric, QRK, Presto, Russco or the legendary European EMT. The most iconic, rare and expensive turntable today may be the EMT 927 with prices reaching 50k Euro for a perfect restored former radio broadcast turntable. I never would start any discussion of ideology why an IWD is competitive or superior to any high and belt-drive or DD turntable. The others will argue the IWD is esoteric/ ideology and was outdated in the end of the 70´s and beaten by the other, more modern and technically superior drive concepts. To point it out, the manufacturer`s reason to leave the idlerwheeldrive way was more or less cost economics first of all - a belt drive and even DD turntable are cheaper to produce than any idlerwheel drive. Less engeneering was necessary + lower production costs = higher profit! In my ears and a lot of other ears the rumble and drive noises ( wow+ flutter) of a well serviced IWD turntable are quiet low and acceptable. A good serviced and strong motor will deliver a superior torque, stable synchronisation and stable rotation speed. With the Lenco or Garrard motor it is possible to add a separate speedcontroller to perfectly finadjust the speed by control of the voltage input. Any heavy platter (Lenco, Garrrad) has additional advantages to reach the target of a constant speed. Construction typical noises and rumble can be eliminated by a very good and massive oversized aftermarket bearing, optimized motor, a massive plinth, the separation of motor & bearing island on thick metalplates and a separated tonarm board and some minor isolation tricks. The result may be a competitive idlerwheel drive turntable. The IWD is not dead or fallen of time, even if it is a vintage concept. You may have a look on the actual commercial turntable offers by - Jean Nantais/ TJN analog ( possibly the father of the "renaissance of IWD" in our days): tjn-analog.com/turntables-by-jean-nantais/ - Peter Reinders/ PTP-audio, Netherlands: www.ptpaudio.com/ptp-audio.html - Thomas Schick, Germany: thomas-schick.com/en/ - Martina Schöner, L´Art du Son, Germany/GB: artduson.com/ - Jonathan Weiss/ O.M.A., USA: oswaldsmillaudio.com/turntable - J.P. van Vliet, EMT restoration, Netherlands: www.jpvanvliet.nl/hall-of-fame/emt-927a-st-6186-from-1961/ - REED, the MUSE turntable comes as IDW version as choice: www.reed.lt/product/muse-3a/ - SME - Garrard 301 reborn: garrardturntables.co.uk/ Yes it is NEW! - VPI industries TITAN with external IDW: vpiindustries.com/products/titan What have most of these recreations, restorations or new constructions in common: They are really expensive ( besides the PTP audio player) and they are price tagged beginning around 10.000,- Euro and much higher, depending from the parts/ tonarm e.g. My way of re-designing was a longer journey and it isn´t my first rebuilt of an old Lenco. Sure, there are concrete reasons to choose the Lenco L75 or L78 as a base. 1) First of all - the price, the Lenco base is cheapest, it is affordable. The Lenco recordplayer was a mass market product, and was even sold worldwide under licenses to Bogen or Goldring. Today Lencos are still available for reasonable low prices in the used market. The production was much higher than the one of Garrard an Thorens. If you take a look on the massive rising market prices within the last 10 or 5 years for 301/ 401 and 124 in proper condition ( Ebay prices as a marker ) and compare with the just moderate rising prices of the Lencos, you may agree that the Lenco is the better choice as the base of a rebuit concerning the total cost of such re-buildings. The material costs of my " Goldenwhite", shown in this video, are quiet high as you may imagine. But in the end it is cheaper than most of the commercial produced IDW turntables. 2) Availability: I have a bunch of base players in stock to restore, service or re-design. I have reliable international audio friends and companies who are able to produce and deliver the parts that I can not produce myself and need to complete a turntable in a similar standard as the Goldenwhite demontrator 3) Workshopping: A Lenco is much easier to restore and service than any Garrard or Thorens. Peter Reinders designed the wonderful PTP steel plates that I use a base of my Lenco re- construction. It is not senseful in any way ( concerning the actual financial value of a restored original) to slaughter any Garrard or Thorens turntable for a radical re-design. 4) Sustainability: Any Lenco recreation is rocksolid. Lasting for decades, easy to service. Better than buying a new turntable with a much bigger carbondixid footprint. 5) Lenco re-builts are construction kits: It is easy and affordable to create an effective low cost entry version, keeping it as is, using just a massive wooden plinth, an affordable 9" tonearm. Any additional option will optimize the turnable but rise the costs upto a electronically controlled high end record player with state of the art 12" tonearm or two arm version of choice as shown. It all starts with a restored stock Lenco and a massive wooden plinth. To answer your question if I will go commercial: To be honest, Costas, I have a a daily main business that has any priority and takes a lot of time. The audio thing and the turntables are a hobby and will stay a hobby, even if I sell from time to time one of my products to refinance a new built or do a few builts a year on demand. The possible market for these very special turntables is quiet small. The high end turntable audio market is dominated by big and well known companies and big advertisment budgets. To get into a profitable business high invest in marketing and perhaps a prof. distribution partner would be necessary. These are things of high invest and high risk. I have seen bunches of founders who had wonderful ideas and products who failed in the end. Time... a thing that is always lacking in my life... and a single built could need months... Your Voyed turntable is a good beltdriven one. Try to get to hear a good serviced IWD in your living surrounding with your ears. Take some time with well known music, try classics, try Jazz, try Rock/ Pop and let yourself surprise if you hear anything more dynamics and details or difference comparing to your VOYD. If so, find a cheap but complete Lenco 75 and do a disassemble, service and reassemble for studies if you like to go that IWD way. If you are not on the DIY side, choose one of the new IWD players I linked above. All the best, Joerg
@@joergkoch8448 Dear Joerg, I cannot thank you enough for the generosity and wealth of information you have so kindly provided in your email. I am intrigued by your thoughts and experience, and although my Voyd Reference (already a huge investment!!) is a fab deck, having heard an EMT 950 at a friend’s place as well as a Garrard 301 in a show, I must say that I am seriously thinking to dip my toes into the IWD world at some point. I am well aware of J. van Vliet, for EMT, Jean Nantais for Lenco, and Thomas Schick arms are already starting to “talk to me”. Will be closely searching for your thoughts as you are indulging yourself in the world of the IWD and the 360 overall perspective you’ve given me has risen my respect of your professional opinion to the highest regards and appreciation. Thank you so much. Kind regards, Christos
I totally agree with you, Joerg. The performance/price ratio of the Lenco is great value. When fully modified, the Lenco will compete head-to-head with the other more expensive idlers and even the expensive modern turntables. The idlers sound has more soul and emotion to their music, more involving and draws you into the music instead of just listening.
Loving the Thomas Schick tonearm, nice and simple and extremely good! Using the 9"-version with an SPU Mono on the L75. Bliss! 😃
Hello, I really appreciate your project. I'm from Brazil and I'm thinking about do the same, how was you experience? Do you still have them? Is it worth to make this enclosure? Thank you so much.
Hello from Germany! Yes, I still have these Altecs. Concerning the 604E - these are iconic and fantastic built speakers. I putted the pair in new built Altec Lansing 612 utility cabinets as they were formerly used as studio monitors. You may know, depending from the kind of music you prefer, the 604E chassis miss a little bit of deep frequencies - from the point of hearing of modern times. One way to get more deeper bass could be to use a larger cabinet as the Altec 620 e.g. Another way I found easy and successfull was to a add an active `Ripol` subwoofer to my 612 cabinets. If you prefer vocal music, small ensembles & classic jazz, the 604E + 612u cabinets may be fine for themselves... Just give them a try - if your way is to get more bass, forget about the 612u and build 620 cabinets with more volume. Best regards, Joerg - Avidity Audio-
@@joergkoch8448 thank you very much. It is all that I need.

are the cs 701s any good?
Hello Ricardo, depends what you expect & how much money you are willing to spend. The 701 are all in all fine small allrounders with a bit too much thickened bass I would describe. They are fine for smaller rooms. If you want more within the vintage Pioneer range, try to listen & buy a pair of 901. Regards, Joerg

An interesting perception, Fred, and so different from others. Maybe you would like to show a video of your own audiochain playing this MOBY title for a better understanding of your comment. Thanks
Hello! I love your channel. I would love to know. Which is your favorite of your speakers you have featured on your channel?
Thanks so much, John! Speakers? Beginning with modern high range Hifi gear I became a lover of vintageaudio over the years as you may have recognized. If you ask for a generalist with wide purpose range, I think my favorite is the Altec Lansing model 19. Concerning vocalmusic, smaller line-ups and acoustic music the Altec 604E duplex built in a large, ventilated cabinet or even as an open baffle may reproduce a more live hearing experience with a bit more accentuation of the heights, probably perfect mids but less deep bass. The Altec 920-8B, if you may find a proper pair of these rare coax/ duplex speakers that were originally intended as ceiling built-in speakers, were a big surprise to me when I heard them first. Over decades no one cared about these chassis that were intended and sold as ceiling built-in speakers in hotels, congress halls and bigger public rooms . The legend 604E, the model 19´s, model 17´s always stood in the center of buyer´s interest. But - the 920-8B have a lot of advantages. First of all their price is underrated, still today they are a budget buy. if you will be able to find an offer. Years ago one could get a pair for handful $. What you get is a speaker built in good old high quality with an integrated crossover that is fine so far. If you have heard my videos with the 920-8B built in an openbaffle you hear a budget solution that doesn´t kick the model 19 or 604 but it is a great experience and maybe just a quantum beyond the soundquality of the bigger brothers. I like it very much. To lift the 920-8B on a higher level my way would be constructiong optimized, external crossovers and the try to put the 920 in real big bassreflex cabinets. PIONEER: You heard my old 3-way CS 701? O.k. in the video, they aren´t placed ideal - they stand on the floor, the bassreflection is too much, the bass too fat. Place these cheapies in a smaller listeningroom, put them on a rocksolid speaker stands on ear´s height and you´ll be a happy listener. More volume, more frequency spectrum desired? The more rare ( old) Pioneer CS 901 could be a way.... For the last months I am enjoying my DIY restorated Altec model 19 😄
@@joergkoch8448 Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply. You have a wonderful array of speaker options! Thank you for the recommendation of the 920-8b. I will keep my eye out for them. I have always wanted a set of the 604 speakers as I don't think I can fit the model 19 in my space. I have a hunch the Model 846b Valencia's would be a very good fit based on your experience with the model 19's. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
@@thetakeout John, if your homebase is USA there won´t be any problem to find a nice pair of ol´Altec 920-8B. They were originally used as built-in speakers in all these churches, socialclubs, public buildings, hotel ballrooms and so on. They were also sold including different Altec utility cabinets for PA purposes/ live concerts. The Valencia, I´m sure, is a good choice if cabinet size matters. 👍
@@joergkoch8448 I will be on the Search! I wonder if the Valencia Drivers would fit and perform well in the 620 cabinet that you have.
@@thetakeout No these are not the 620. I use a rebuilt of the smaller 612u (utility) cabinets for the 604E speakers. My built story: th-cam.com/video/xIL87CTrHOU/w-d-xo.html . Concerning a marriage of your Valencia drivers with another pair of bigger cabinets - it will be trial & error and I think the crossovers will neeed an upgrade. It may have had reasons for each of Altec factory setups. Nowadays there a software tools for design/construction of cabinets matching to the special drivers concept. Just my thoughts... ;-)

Cmj audio sell the 128b altec lansing amplifier 4000euro i bild 2 altec 605b duplex in a 612 cabinet yes the altec lansing sound
I saw them, very nice but hardly restorated - that may success or not - two Peerless tranformer each is very good. :-)
I think the amplifiers are not 220 volt ?
@@martinvanrens7486 As far as I see, these amps are US powernet type with 117-125V in. I guess you will need an external voltage converter for primary 230 V, 150Watt, secondary 17-125V. If the amps were internally convertable, Mr. Müller of cjm should know. I made bad experiences with external voltage converters - the very good converters are not on the cheap side. ;-)

Hello Martin, these Altec amps are 1593B solid state, 50watts. The ones with the nice sounding Peerless transformers. Never heard the older valve tube version in real life... The Sun Audio valve monos are playing in this video.
Hallo Joerg, gerade erst entdeckt.
Zweiflern trete ich mit der freundlichen Aufforderung " Don´t tell me, show me" entgegen.
Very beautiful !!!! And very good Shick 12" !! I have the same arm with the graphite headshell and Lyra Delos …. I love this arm !!!! Sorry for my english 😜
Pas de problème, Guillaume. Your English is very good. Yes, the tonearm by Thomas Schick is very good, optical and functional. I never had the need to buy & use one of these overprized vintage Ortofon 12" tonearms.... Enjoy the music! All the best, Joerg
Great demo track. Did you pick up a copy of their new rsd release, “Live in Loveland”? If not, highly recommended!
Not yet, but I will have an ear to the album. THANKS
joergkoch I Think it is AWESOME!
All in all it was a project over one year to think about the design and to search the parts, waiting for the ordered 12" tonearm, the plinth and the galvanic gold plating... The optical & acoustical result result is fine, the Lenco plays definitively on a higher level and in another class than the very good basic L75. ;-)
Genial! Da stimmt einfach "Alles" Danke fürs teilen ;)
Herzlich Dank für die Blumen, Kayan! :-)
This lenco is absolutely amazing. Had to subscribe
Thanks so much....
I know that it doesn't make sense to assess the quality of an audio system on youtube. Still, I'm going to say that you have an astoundingly good system. There is no trace of horn "honk" or edginess that I can hear. What I hear is a system that brings the music into the room as an an alive, breathing and natural entity. You've done very well. Enjoy it.
Altec amplifier
In this recording I used the Sun Audio SV-300B pp valvetube amps.
The Beatles never used Altec 604 drivers. EMI Studios only used the 605 driver. Very similar.
To make a ling story short: There are a lot of stories and fairytales out there in the web. In fact, you are right, EMI certified the Altec 605. It was a question of availability and costs to introduce the 605 chassis. I haven´t been in the studio with the Beatles so I´m not able to proof if they used the 605 with any recording in studio 2. We all know the studio´s photos and perhaps the book "Recording the Beatles"... The 605 became quickly after the first release unliked by the music professionals of that time period, they were used to "604" over decades. Concerning my DIY building project it was not important if the historical correct 605 or the improved 604/ 604E would be the speaker of my choice. It´s a recreation - not an original. It was simply a question of ability on the actual market... Regards, Joerg _____________________________ " Following the 604C came the short-lived 604D, which was soon replaced with the 605A. The 605A was supposed to be an improvement over the 604, but it was poorly received, partly because it was an attempt to make it cheaper to build the 604, but mostly because the name, "604", had become a widely recognized industry standard, and people didn't WANT a 605 - they wanted a 604. So, Altec relented and released the 604E SuperDuplex."
@@joergkoch8448 I see no reason to doubt "Recording the Beatles". Their research is extensive and exhaustive and not from the web. If you prefer the 604 for your project that's your right and totally fine. It was ok to refer to Beatles and EMI's use of Altec Duplex monitors but it would have been good to simply point out EMI had gone with the younger sibling of the 604, the 605. In this era of "stories and fairytales", historically correct is preferable. I actually did get to hear Beatles studio outtakes played on 612 cabinets (with presumably 605a drivers but I could not examine them) at Abbey Road in Studio 2 in July of 1983. It was a truly wonderful experience.
@@nedhoey From time to time there is the opportunity to get into the studios. The last event was on two weekends last november. www.abbeyroad.com/lectures While pandemic restrictions it was impossible to travel to London. I´m quiet interested to visit one of the future events. I could imagine that you had been quiet impressed. All the best, Joerg
@@joergkoch8448 I had seen there was the event in November. Other than that I wasn't aware they started doing openings and lectures occasionally since 2012 which I think must have been the first since the 1983 "The Beatles at Abbey Road" presentation. At that time they insisted there would not be any other public openings. Of course that's something that could change eventually and it finally did in 2012. It's great more people have been able to go. Very unfortunate it wasn't possible for you to attend. I hope you get another chance. Based on posts and a TH-cam video, the recent events are much bigger than in '83. More gear on display and more people in the room. I assume the lectures include playing some Beatles but I haven't seen any mentions of it. And they don't use Altec 605a/612a anymore. ;)
hi , i see your post on "Vintage JBL/Altec/TAD" nice !
Merci bien! Thank you. It was a hard job to get the Altec from a lousy condition overall to this resto with state.... But as always fun and worth the work...
Wow. What a great way to listen to music. Even on youtube I get a sense of what a system like this can do. Well done.
You´re absolutely right Gary, it isn´t possible to demonstrate a live audio impression from my listening room 1:1 via a simple and quality reduced YT video, recorded with any videocam & integrated microphone. Thanks for your friendly comment. As you may imagine, I had a journey over years with trial & error to complete and restorate this vintage audio chain and to reach the actual setup which is quiet satisfying to my ears. Best wishes, from Germany, Joerg

Thank you, Joseph!
I just found one of these
Congrats!
Dang. I almost got 8 of those from my school that was changing a PA system but the school decided to keep them last minute
What a pity... ;-(
What platter is that?
I used a standard Lenco 75 platter, that was galvanic hard gold plated. :-) I used PTP6 plates in this project, so the platter seems to be "lifted" in comparison to a ususal Lenco steel chassis where you only see the upper part of the platter. All the best - listen to the music!
@@joergkoch8448 I used PTP5, but you platter side look thicker
@@loftstudio Oh, I see. Possible that this appears to be because of the thick platter mats that I use on top of the platter, they are around 4-6 mm thick ( acryl or copper)...
Did you ditch the 604 for this VOTT like set up? If yes, why?
No no, I did´nt "ditch" the 604E - they are still here. I just found time for some experiments in testing the 811 horns. First I tried a pair of Altec 4156-8 LF chassis in the cabinets with the 811 horns+ 802-8G compression drivers. The 4156 didn´t sound right to my ears. So I got another try with a pair of instrumental chassis, the 421-8 LF which was more pleasure to listen to. I didn`t expect this, but sometimes the reallife testing is necessary - all theory is grey... both tests were made with Altec 1285 x-overs with 1200Hz crossing frequency. With an additional active Ripol subwoofer I was able to listen to the music in really nice way. Besides my utility cabinets that are mismatichng in any way - the combination of the 421LF in big Onken cabinets maybe a proper way. Meanwhile I catched a pair of Altec model 19 speakers which I have under full restoration - will take some time for awakening... Cheers
@@joergkoch8448 thank you for your valuable feedback. interested in 604 for years got 601C to tie me over until I have room for 604. now might get 9844a to experience separate compression horn. A 19 is available local to me. tempted but size is an issue.
@@etm3398 Absolutely right - the A19 are quiet oversized and will not be matching in any room. I will have a try at 20sqm - probably too small . Enjoy the music...
Which crossover? Did you make one or did you use theirs?
I used the integrated Altec Lansing x-overs. These are component of the coaxial speaker and hidden under the plastic cover on the backside. I am interested in testing other x-overs but had no time to care for that. May be a future project... Cheers
This is upside down. The drivers should be firing down to disperse sound. Put it on "L" brackets and it will come alive. Cheers!
You´re absolutely right - it was just a test...
