The Lexus GX, known for its mid-size, off-road prowess, has finally received a much-needed redesign for the 2024 model year. With an all-new platform, updated powertrain, and a host of modern features, the new GX550 retains only its rugged appearance from its predecessors. Its boxy, Land Cruiser-inspired exterior is designed to stand the test of time, which is great given the GX’s reputation for long product cycles.
This 2024 GX550 is built on the same robust body-on-frame platform as the 2024 Toyota Sequoia and 2024 Toyota Tundra. In the Lexus SUV lineup, it finds its place between the luxurious off-roading flagship, the LX, and the TX, which focuses more on interior space and on-road comfort.
Pricing & Which one to buy
The 2024 Lexus GX550 starts at $64,250.
This SUV has two distinct personalities: a luxurious on-roader or a trail-conquering off-roader. For those who plan to spend most of their time driving on paved roads, we recommend the Luxury trim. This version elevates the GX550's interior with semi-aniline leather upholstery. Overtrail+ is definitely worth considering.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the hood of the GX550, you'll find a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that delivers an impressive 349 horsepower, outpacing the previous generation's V-8. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, every model comes equipped with four-wheel drive as standard.
In performance tests, the GX550 Premium accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds, a full second faster than its predecessor.
On the road, the GX550 offers plenty of power and feels lively right from the start. However, the ride can be a bit stiff, particularly with the larger optional wheels. While handling isn't its strongest suit, the steering is precise and the performance is suitable for a tall, boxy SUV. Where the Lexus truly excels is off-road, thanks to excellent outward visibility, which proves invaluable when navigating tight trails.
Fuel Efficiency
Even with the switch from a V-8 to a twin-turbo V-6, the fuel economy of the GX550 sees only a slight improvement over the 2023 model. The EPA estimates it will achieve 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, compared to the previous 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. The GX550's robust powertrain and full-time 4WD system contribute to its lower efficiency, making it less fuel-efficient than some might hope.
Interior and Comfort
Despite its rugged exterior, the GX550 offers a luxurious interior. You can choose between faux or genuine leather upholstery in a variety of colors. The Overtrail models are designed as two-row vehicles, providing seating for up to five passengers. However, the Premium and Luxury trims offer three rows, accommodating up to seven passengers.
Surprisingly, the second-row space is somewhat limited given the GX's overall size, and the third row is quite cramped. As a five-passenger vehicle, the GX is adequate, but if you plan to carry more passengers, be prepared for some complaints about the tight quarters.
Cargo Space
In three-row versions of the GX550, cargo space is quite limited with all seats up, offering just 10.3 cubic feet. However, folding down the third row expands this to 40.2 cubic feet, and with the second row folded, you get a spacious 76.9 cubic feet.
Cargo space is significantly better in the two-row Overtrail trims, which don't have a third row. These models provide 45.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and an impressive 90.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.
The only drawback is the high load-in height of the cargo area, which can make lifting heavier items a bit of a challenge."
Infotainment System & Technology
Every GX550 model comes equipped with a 14.0-inch infotainment system. It also features a separate 12.3-inch digital gauge display, which can be customized to show various driver information. Most models include six USB-C ports throughout the cabin, while the Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims come with four. An optional wireless smartphone charging pad is also available. For audio, the standard setup includes a 10-speaker stereo, but audiophiles can opt for the premium 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system.
The GX550 also boasts a comprehensive suite of standard driver assist technologies.
Towing Abilities
When it comes to towing, the GX550 impresses with a capacity of up to 9,096 pounds. This far surpasses crossover competitors like the Land Rover Defender, BMW X5, and Genesis GV80, and even outperforms the Chevrolet Tahoe. Bought a new Rav4 for my wife in 2012. All it ever needed was gas, oil change, tires and brake pads. After 12 years it's still going strong. Will probably upgrade to a new Rav4 soon and give this one to the teenager.
Tucsson is better if you are tall, you have much better visibility. Tucson Exterior Design is much better. Infortainment system of Tucson has a better placement, I am not sure if Rav4 with tablet screen is the winner. Toyota has higher safety rating. ...
How about the resale value? I think rav4 will win.

Good comparison, thanks. We just shopped these 2 and ended up buying 2025 CRV Hybrid. We’re getting >40 mpg. Agree with your assessments, except for reliability. Many mechanics say Honda is better than Kia. And Kia has poor reputation for honoring their supposed 100K mile power train warranty.

Thats Stupid. Display shown in Rav4 is of higher trim and not XLE which was compared. XLE interior is not of very high quality. From XSE it is much better but Toyota is acting way arrogant now. Leaving important features even after pricing higher and then providing add on packages. Why not just give the features. Its like they are playing game. Hyundai has improved on the other hand.

Why didn’t Toyota do the exact same thing in the back space lower the hybrid battery same as new 4R. Other than that I would love to have LC in my driveway 👍

100% the new 4runner will NOT have the longevity of the 4.0L V6....infact it wont even have the reliability of the 4L...the days of buying a vehicle and taking care of it to last forever are gone...its all about profits now and this goes for everything in life including your own health

While many of the updates are nice and it is a good looking SUV, the 4 cylinder turbo charger is a disappointment and will not be as reliabe as the V6. Time will tell. Hopefully the trnasmission which is normally carried over from Tacoma does not display the same failures being reported in the 2024 Tacoma's
Yes absolutely agree. Turbo is always cause for extra worry unfortunately. One can only hope this transmission holds up well. Indeed time will tell.
Not necessarily think how long turbo diesel motors run reliably. If its built right it should last a long time. It is a toyota afterall it shld be reliable within a year after release. I have the first year of the 3rd gen tacoma and it has over 200,000 miles on it and its been nothing but solid since new
