Interestingly it was reveiled that he is a good guy in the books later than the first movies were filmed. So basically filming crew portrayed him properly even potentially not knowing what kind of character he will happen to be in the end. Nowadays when we can compile all the series in one single video there is no inconsistencies in his behavior. He was portrayed to give a feeling of a suspicious, creepy and untrustworthy person yet at the same time there always were some hints it is a bluff. Not an easy thing to do to say the least.

It's sad how Snape's bullying at Hogwarts moulded him into a morose,bitter person. However his choice to turn from the dark side to the side of reason was basically a self sacrifice, himself possibly knowing that it will mean his own demise! If I was Snape I wouldn't like Harry Potter either! But when you think about it, the way Harry Potter grew up, I'm not surprised that he's an arrogant little shit !! It must have been hard for Snape to keep his eits about him, knowing one slip up with the Death Eaters or the 'ever present when you don't want him to be', Lucius Malfoy, could mean your own death!!
