Westburn & Victoria Parks 2024 | Local Sprint 2.9km | See Description | Headcam Orienteering
Local sprint event, kept the audio on this one. Any suggestions on the video/map details? Considering next time have the audio + previous type of audio mixed in with possible talk of choices etc maybe move the map over to the left. Also still working on the map automation similar to orientview. Control description will figure out a way to include it. between controls or overlay.

Control description linked below, new mapped area, first urban sprint of the season. Gps Seems a bit off for the first control or so. Generally did ok, but more mistakes than I liked on a sprint. Also lacked proper footwear which is why on the hills i either went down on my bum / slow or struggled to climb up resulting in a terrible route choice from 7 to 8. I over thought the hill and missed t...

First time capturing Balmedie. The map was double sided, flipping at control 10. For ease I've added all controls to the video. Lots of mistakes made, when watching it back there was a few points that seemed very obvious but at the time not so much (Part of the fun). I have a few videos to prep for the past couple of months, including a Balmoral cairn run with an o map. Results: www.sportident....

Cuts out at around control 10... full gps on livelox/rg Brilliant area and really enjoyed the course. Didnt do as well as hoped (Not been training much) but generally did ok apart from some silly route choices such as 15 to 16. The actual map may have had an overprint mistake compared to the online between 9 & 10. About half way the map shows dark green but the physical one was rough open. The ...

Glen O Dee | Local Green 4.6km | Headcam Orienteering Not much to write as was so long ago, won't leave it that long next time. I think it was close to 9 or 10 I noticed Finlay closing in. Wasnt much thought for the paths so decided to run it hard. Was fun apart from feeling like most of my organs were ready to explode at the finish :) Thanks Maroc for putting on the event, think I've done a DN...

Apologies again in advance, the video ends about 10 mins to early as I wasnt running fast enough/navigating optimal for the battery ;) Really enjoyable, few mistakes but managed to correct before making them really big. I struggled at the start. Went straight into it which wasnt expected then got confused by the map :) I've made progress with the audio, still not the real audio yet, cursing onl...

Stirling City Race (SOUL 10) 5.9km | Mens Open Wow what an event. My first urban outside of Grampian and it did not disappoint. I was a bit nervous on the distance / climb but that wasnt the issue at all. My navigation as always. So maybe skip post control 4. I struggled initially at the start to adjust to the map which was silly as it was great. Then I made a really really bad mistake going fo...

Seaton Park Sprint 3.6km. Not much to say other than a trip at the start :) Plan for this was to keep an easy pace as I had an interval session straight after this with my local running club. Performance was good at the running club. A few times I had to slow down while running seaton. What I found, fast or easy pace i probably read the map the same amount / hesitated the same. Also I had road ...

Pannanich Regional Event • Spoiler the video cuts out about 1hr 16min, but does capture all the falls before this. First regional in a very long time. As tough as the course seemed, it was still brilliant. Started off ok, although playback certainly shows hesitation. As i'm sure most did I struggled mainly with the heather. Did debate doing brown but thought the climb / distance a bit to much f...

Duthie Park / Ferryhill Urban Sprint - 3rd Sprint of the season. 4.40km total distance I found this course a bit different to the rest. Longer route choices, out of bounds area to consider, few silly mistakes where I lost focus or drifted onto the next control. Main Mistakes: #3 Lost map contact over the maps then went right instead of slightly left #11 Started to think about #12 that it should...

Westhill Urban Sprint - 2nd Sprint of the season I really enjoyed this course, Felt it had some tricky decisions and good variety of routes. Main Mistakes: #3 Lost map contact / didnt focus enough and thought I was further than I was #8 Missed the single fence, noticed just before it was passable, considered jumping for a bit then went round. Either way should of gone west not north. #12 Think ...

C39 Day 4 / First of two runs at Culbin. One spoiler is the video ends about 1 minute before the finish due to the battery I think but there is a bonus faceplant just before the cutout. Lots of interesting orienteering, mistakes made which these videos are to help me improve. The footage I reviewed for a bit in the evening while replaying livelox. C39 Day 3 / Loved Roseisle. Orienteering not so good which is visible from the start but lovely area. So plenty to watch and learn from. Added in some Ai generated audio. Only a 2 minute loop just now. Also the delay for the video is due to the recording format. I've had to squish the video a bit. Good video :) Some people ask me about audio - I always mute orienteering videos when I watch them - always a bit strange hearing people panting (although the occasional f&^%k when they get something wrong is funny). I notice there was quite a few mistakes on the map - most of the light green should have been olive green (assuming they don't want people running through the rose gardens.. and a whole tennis court gone?
ha yeah if showing someone an orienteering video people usually comment about the panting. The occasional swearing / talking to my self is why it was all music before. Think ill lean towards music or a voiceover. Will take a look at the map, the club is very small so its a struggle for support. Often get comments about the maps at events which is good feedback.
Hola amigo. que camara usas? Busco una camara barata para grabar mis carreras. que me recomiendas? Y que programa usas para realizar los videos con el mapa y gps intregrados? Gracias
Its a gopro hero 11. I got it last year in the sale. Had cheaper ones before but its been worth it. Since recording I found it really helps me learn. I know some of the other people recording have a gopro 8 and it still looks great. I use a script I wrote (WIll publish soon) that automates ffmpeg. Also record the livelox playback using OBS (I create the events on livelox). Many people still use OrientView. Its really good with QuickRoute etc I don't use it as my scripts use spot server instances for encoding in Azure. But if my homepc was built for encoding I'd possible use it rather than cloud. Another tool is RGMapVideo which is good but doesnt have an easy interface and I'm not sure if its developed anymore. I think the dev is still active but he works a lot of good projects. Theres a wrapper for RGMapVideo that can be found on a dk site wobelix. Some of the more popular videos use a combination of the above + premier pro / davinci
O causo mucha molestia? Graxias amigo.
Change of direction all the time. Very demanding course. Well done!
Looks like a hybrid map to me, i.e. not ISSOM. The planner really needs to make adjustments to the map in cases like #9 or use a different control site!
9 was bad mapping - you were expecting a passable fence, but came across an impassable hedge - in fact there were a few areas where the map needs a few updates - nice run though - looks cold?
Could you teach me how to make video that way to study my routes?
It could be better putting the control descriptions in the video. Thanks
Ive seen those horrendous looking reddish fern/weed things in a lot of videos. What the heck are they? They look difficult to trudge through, and massively obscure controls when placed in a patch of it...
Think its the dead Bracken or Heather? If its the heather they can be a pain to go through on a nice surface but with rocks/holes it can be a nightmare for the ankles.
Puzzling...where was the water features and small distinctive path on the map when you were at #2? And I wouldnt necessarily call that line of rocks just before 3 (8:02 time) a "stone wall" as the mapmaker did...?
The stone wall was pretty difficult to see. Mainly covered in moss although that point it was fairly broken as the path goes through it. Re the water. We have had a lot of rain just before that event. I did a training run in deeside a few days ago and it was similar with the amount of sitting water.
Hello. One day I will get a headcam setup, can you tell me what you use? the video looks smooth. Thanks. I would like to say that when cannot be outside at an O event, I like watching these types of videos. Where is pannanich? However, I must say it’s almost painful watching someone make a route choice as you did from 4 to 5 where you turned left off the logging road at around 13:30 straight uphill over the logging slash and nowhere even close to the control. Along with that the choice to not walk back 20 meters from 4 to get to the logging road. Were there some drastic conditions that day requiring hose decisions? Thanks. Good luck at future events.
Ditto compass bearing: What were you thinking halfway to #5 when you veered completely off course, going downhill instead of climbing?
Other than obvious mistake, I think it was this point I was questioning my route choice for the terrain as was hard going and thought maybe I should of taken the track to the right and down then in at the fence (which I couldn't see in or out of 5) combo of not reading contours, questioning route / losing confidence. When I got into 5 I also remember thinking I missed a checkpoint but figured out where I was fairly quickly by the rocks which helped else may have missed it
I think your contour reading could be improved, you also seem to be missing a bit of flow.
Yeah totally agree. It's something I'm trying to pay more attention to as I did something similar on another. When I stopped orienteering 20+ year ago I hadn't really got to reading contours. Although I guess been back at it for a few years so no real excuse now 🤣. Will watch again for control 5 and see if I can remember what went on
Amateur run...
круто, мне понравилось!!!!!
Oh and a tip for #4, use the contours as soon as you started heading downhill should of set off red flags.
Thanks! It's embarrassing how badly that was messed up. I remember my head being really confused almost from the start to control 1 then exiting the cemetery wrong. I also think when I entered the path area for #4 and seen someone else I just thought use the speed up the path and just threw my self off further. Re distance, this was the longest sprint I've done. I think usually they are 3-4km. Fitness wise mentally I probably held back a bit more than I should of thinking the distance id burn out
Different terrain you guys race around in the UK. never done a long distance sprint like this before.
Чудово! колись був у Шотландії у містечкі Абердін, дуже схожа архітектура
Aberdeen is where I'm based. Stirling was so much nicer with the mixed terrain. Check out my duthiepark/ferryhill video as that's Aberdeen central 👍
This video is very good with 60 fps for good eyes! Thanks! 👍
Great run. Really admire navigation in this terrain. I remember it being challenging for me during WMOC 2019 in Riga.
Not convinced #3 is on the right tree.... too close to the building? Lovely ornamental Park, but not sure you should be crossing those flower beds on the way to #10 !! 😮
Good point re #3 checked coming back into it from 6 on the video and think you may be right. For #10 yeah cringe. Looking at it now seems obvious. Not that it helps oob but they were jumped. It wasnt something at the time I noticed tbh compared to 17 - 18
Still a very large amount, of even experience Urban Orienteers, who transgress olive o.o.b. areas that are far more obvious than that!
Great HeadCam videos, very clear pictures and nice clean, easy to read map inserts. Thanks very much for posting! :)
Nice run - I think the mapping around control 3 was pretty 'optimistic' - more like vegetation walk than rough open land. Imagine you got a shock when you crested that small ridge.
Yeah, didn't help having shorts on. One lesson learnt was, I was going through it either way, so shouldn't have hesitated so much. Apart from that control the rest was enjoyable
Hard with all the small contours, what was your biggest improvement? The course looks more like a middle distance than long distance with all the controls, not allowing any route-choices.
Yes certainly made it tricky. Sounds daft but for me this helped realise how much I was stopping / slowing down but also lacking confidence on catching features. Also simply relating terrain to map. It's still something I struggle with. At night I watched this video / looked at the maps which helped for day 5.
Great video. I really enjoyed running at Roseisle, probably my favourite area from the 6 days.
I'm hoping to get back soon either training or a local event. Really nice terrain, such a good mix
Loved watching this! I was co planner for Day 5, it's great watching how you did the course.
Thanks for the planning. I really enjoyed it, certainly the best run of the week for me and managed to learn a lot
Entertaining! Thanks
What Software do you use to make the headcam film?
Ffmpeg for the encoding. Taking in the GoPro raw footage, and a separate video of the map file. It's a script I've put together making a few changes still but will publish on GitHub soon for others. Also uses azure for video encoding
