Emptiness and Placemaking in Small Armenian Towns
When Maria Gunko began her ethnographic fieldwork in a small Armenian town in late 2022, people in casual conversation would tell her that “there is nothing here” (stegh vochinch chka [ստեղ ոչինչ չկա]). This “nothingness” is similar to other local descriptors - emptiness, abandonment, ruination, lostness, etc. - found throughout the post-Soviet region and beyond. They pertain to life in places losing people, jobs, infrastructures, and welfare. Yet the “nothing here” does not mean an actual absence of things. It encompasses the condition of reordering, the changing relations between people, space, state, and capital after the collapse of state socialism. “Nothing” is actually “something,” produced by the combination of “shock therapy,” liberalisation, hectic privatisation, and the tensions of reterritorialisation.
In this presentation, Maria led us through her reading of a place that was described by its residents as being “created out of void” by the Soviet state and “collapsing back into void” after the dissolution of the USSR.
This event was held in collaboration with the Emptiness research project, hosted by the Centre on Migration, Policy & Society (COMPAS) in the School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography (SAME) at the University of Oxford, UK, and the European Research Council.

Thanks a lot! I have been looking for Zabelle's "Groung" for a couple of years, for it had disappeared. I published a book, 2010, 2011, the first part of which describes the tragic state of Armenian (unfortunately dead now) ethnic song and ethnic dance, but it has been unnoticed. I'd like to send an e-copy of it to you, but I don't have your address.

Human mind is such a curious thing. At once glorious; given to flights of imagination; selfish and destructive' desirous of power over others, influenced by external stimuli; etc. Out of unlimited mental possibilities, the human creature began the process of cooking up a concept which became known as 'religion'. Brought about by a fantasy and unproven theorem, great number of individuals (societies) with painfully limited knowledge of sciences, began the journey of wishful thinking which resulted in a tug of war - dividing societies. Curiously the religious began making impressive use of lamentations, repressive self discipline and hallucinatory functions of the brain a useful tool of control. Whether one uses impressive vocabulary to record a thought or not, reality remains a relative thing open to the impression one acquires from what ones observes. (Even science has tobe proven, contradicted and re-proved) On many instances superiority complex takes hold of fellow humans where resentment ensues and society becomes chaotic and elitism becomes a part of the fabric of society. "......Life is but a walking shadow, A poor player of stage, Full of sound and fury, Signifying NOTHING". from MACBETH, by W. Shakespeare.

This was a superb presentation in architectural heritage protection and also what can be achieved by people of goodwill working together in international cooperation. With permission, the description field for this video needs the contact details and social media handles of the presenter, Yavuz Ozkaya, and affiliated organisations eg the KMKD, Kültürel Mirası Koruma Derneği, (English: Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage). Indeed it would be useful to add a full list of organisations (eg World Monument Fund) involved since say 2008 in preservation work at Ani and related resources (URLs, books, exhibits etc).

Thank you Christina Maranci for another extraordinary set of exploratory multilingual insights as you head towards finalising your next book on the Citadel of Ani. I look forward to all your presentations. Particularly appreciated are your references to the work of predecessors and peers - Henry Finnis Blosse Lynch, Nicholas Marr, Joseph Orbeli, Arshavir Toramanyan, Michael Stone, Steven Sim, and more. Revisiting the CHRONOLOGY of the Citadel helps situate it. My short note below aims to be an introduction drawing mostly on some of the details recorded by Steven Sim, webmaster at Virtual Ani www.virtualani.org/citadel/index.htm All errors are mine. THE CITADEL 5TH to 15TH CENTURY | The Citadel stood on a hill in what became the city of Ani in the Shirak district in the Ararat province of Armenia. It dates to the 5th century when it was a stronghold of the Kamsarakan Family. Attesting to the age of its settlement, Bronze and Iron Age settlements have been found there. The Citadel is also known as the "Inner Fortress". Some refer to it as "the birthplace of the city". Prince Ashot IV Bagratuni (r. 806-826) is said to have bought from the Kamsarakans the Shirak district, including the Citadel. When in 961 AD the Bagratuni Kings transferred their capital from the city of Kars to the city of Ani, the Citadel became a royal palace. Ani then served as the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia from 961-1045 under the Bagratuni Dynasty. It is worth restating that in the 11th century Ani was home to between 50,000 to 100,000 people making it comparable to Constantinople, Baghdad, and Cairo in size. (It would be useful to know the origin of that oft stated population estimation, which is not stated by Sim.) With the exception of Venice, Constantinople and Paris, cities in Europe (eg Rome, London, Amsterdam) had populations of 100,000 or more only by the 15th century. Besides its ramparts and palace ruins, the Citadel is known for its three churches, parts of which remain: The Palace Church, the Church of the Child Prince, and the Hexagonal Church. The palace was abandoned by the end of the 15th century.
