Pot holes are easily fixed. Turning isn't a big issue it would seem. The cities where it is proposed don't flood much. How shit of a neighbourhood do you live in where the GPS goes out once a week? Rails require so much more money, space and time.

@@thevannmanntrams dont even need a big radius to turn btw. Tram carriages are so short to the point that a 30 degree turn is possible, also dont be blinded by the cost to build the rails themselves. There are tramways that still exist after 100+ years, while any rubber-tyred vehicle will be phased out in 10 years or so, not to mention the constant need to make sure potholes and road infrastructure can keep up. Sometimes the best thing to do is stick to old technology (fit to modern standards atleast). We really don’t have to reinvent trams or BRTs. On the plus side, ARTs are more flexible to transport, make new transit lines, or anticipate obstructions on its path

You have to consider the cost and the time it will take to construct. Also the interruption for a number of years while building and long term coming from reducing ability for cars etc. Building rail or trams isn't a short term cost of constructuon. There is maintenance of the track, there is the subsidisation of the service. Those costs keep piling up year in and year out. If it was just construction costs you'd have trains and trams everywhere in the city. Disadvantages are that its not quite as permanent than if you put down a track at a big cost. So businesses and developers may not engage to the same extent at developing transit oriented hubs for business and housing. Occurring in Melb around Chadstone. Business cases occurring in Perth for Scarborough Beach road. Also considered possibly for the universities and hospitals. Well known academics such as Peter Newman is now fully behind the trackless trams and considers that new developments going forward won't be trams.

Trackless trams are being built in Melbourne. Business case for it in Perth on the glendalough Scarborough route. Increasingly, trackless trams are considered very favourably compared to light rail. Refer to Peter Newman academic articles. Its automatic for driving and steering (though probably would have a driver) is flexible in that it can leave the path if required. Significantly quicker and cheaper to build. Costs of maintaining it is significantly less. Less interruption to existing road network causing less congestion. Streets don't need to be widened leading to significant removal of trees. Disadvantages, but not investing in tracks developers are less invested in developments of housing and businesses nearby. There is the concern that the route could always change. So the public and private partnership arrangement and the development of Transit oriented developments not as successful.
