The Oeschinensee is located above Kandersteg ( Bernese Oberland ) in Switzerland . The water level is on average at an altitude of 1578 m . At normal water levels, the lake is 56 m deep and has a surface area of ​​1.1 km², making it one of the larger mountain lakes in Switzerland. It was formed by several landslides on the flanks of the Fründenhorn and the Doldenhorn .
The lake is framed on the east and south sides by the three-thousand-meter peaks Blüemlisalp , Oeschinenhorn , Fründenhorn and Doldenhorn , whose glacial streams feed it. The Öschibach (on the map of Switzerland with an "Ö" instead of "Oe") flows underground through the lake's enclosure, but soon reemerges. Its water is used to supply Kandersteg with drinking water and to generate electricity . The Öschibach flows into the Kander in Kandersteg .
The access routes to the Blüemlisalp (2834 m) and Fründenhütte (2562 m) of the Swiss Alpine Club run past the Oeschinensee . The restaurants at the Oeschinensee also offer overnight accommodation.
From Kandersteg, the lake can be reached via several hiking trails or by gondola (GKO since 2008, previously chairlift with side view). From the mountain station, the lake can be reached on a gently sloping path in about 25 minutes on foot. In the summer season, an electric vehicle is available between the mountain station of the gondola and the Oeschinensee. A hike leads from the mountain station over the Heuberg (1940 m, with a view of the lake and the surrounding three-thousand-meter peaks) to the Alp Oberbärgli (1978 m), which is open in summer, from where you can descend to the restaurants on the lake via the Alp Underbärgli.
Mountaineers who are not afraid of heights and have a sure footing can walk around the lake. The grass and rock bands of the so-called "Fründenschnur" above the eastern shore of the lake allow an airy traverse from the Alp Underbärgli to the ascent path to the Fründenhütte at an altitude of around 1800 m. The section of the path that follows this on the southern shore of the lake was closed to hiking traffic in 2019 for safety reasons. Here, mudslides threaten to cover the path. The closure will continue in summer 2024, so it is currently not possible to walk around the lake.
