Extremely disappointing. Technically amateurish. You showed nothing at all about the contents and uses and specifics of what a joiner actually did.

We’re sorry to hear this video was not up to standard! We try to keep some of the details for those who visit the museum in person. If you have any additional questions we’d be happy to help!

Norm Simmons was my grandfather and I recall seeing his village of Conklin come to life. He meticulously recreated each building and each time I went to visit, I admired his handiwork. Grandpa, in my eyes, could do anything and everything he set his mind to and had so many talents. If he needed a tool he didn't have, he couldn't run to Home Depot; he would improvise or make a substitute tool of his own design. I'm so proud to be his first-born grandchild. Today (March 29) is the anniversary of his passing, and after 33 years, I still miss him all the time.

The actual difference between a phonograph and a gramophone isn't disc vs. cylinder. A phonograph uses a mechanical feed to drive the playing mechanism across the record, but a gramophone relies on the grooves in the record to do that job. The reason Americans don't use the word "gramophone" is that the inventor, Emile Berliner, lost the rights to use that trademarked name in the USA in a lawsuit, so everything became a phonograph instead. Outside the USA, the gramophone/phonograph distinction carried on.

Not necessarily in terminology, a phonograph can mean both a disc and cylinder machine. While gramophone is specifically a disc machine it’s more of a term that was used by the British/European. You’ll find companies from the 20s all the way into the 40s referring to their disc machines as phonographs in the US, and that’s mainly impart to Edison who kept calling his line of disc machines phonographs

The flutter sound that is heard during play of this cylinder can be eliminated completely on an Edison Opera (as well as on an Edison Amberola II and Amberola III) by inserting a length of the correct gauge spring wire through the tiny hole in the flywheel, through the hole in the mandrel shaft and through the opposite side hole in the flywheel. I've replaced this flywheel balance wire on my own Edison Opera and it now plays a cylinder as smoothly and naturally as it did when new.
