Fast Fashion: The Legacy of Colonialism & Slavery in Modern Day Consumption
In this video, we’re exploring the link between the fast fashion industry and the legacy of colonialism and slavery. All to better understand how the systems we accept today are just as oppressive as systems we learn about from the past.
If you wonder what stance you would’ve taken against slavery and oppression back then, you just have to look at your actions today! Modern-day oppressive systems follow the same blueprint of those from the past, so we can’t be complacent in condoning and supporting these systems today.
This is a super information and idea dense video so take your time watching & please let me know your thoughts! 💭
00:00 - intro
3:06 - colonialism: a new path to wealth
6:20 - the invention of joint stock companies
14:00 - ethical billionaires don’t exist.
19:18 - modern day slavery: prison industrial complex & fast fashion sweatshops
27:43 - don't be lulled to sleep by consumerism. wake up & refuse to be apart of this violence.

First of all, girl you killed it! The style of the video, editing, everything! Second, you are absolutely correct, and this is a topic that should be talked about more, since this whole overconsuption is turning into a worldwide addiction, and to be honest, i have no idea how he as a society can change it.
Another thing I don't think gets talked about a lot is...conditioning children who have been bullied and abused to fuel their pain into being the best. I had my fair share of my grandmother saying that they would all be working for me one day and strive to do that. It doesn't really help with settling conflict or understanding other people. That fueled and rooted pain can also lead to stressful lifestyles and using overconsumption to mamifest
This year I failed to make any resolutions like I often do. Nothing of it all gave me fulfillment, when you come to realize the consumerist and capitalist system we’re born into is only an ornament of humanity not what humanity, as a part of nature is meant to entail. I’ve come to detest accolades and titles because I believe they do not tell the whole story of what effort people put in but are cut short due to lack of connection or privilege, among others. Hence, our only true currency is what we can offer. I really appreciate this video. I’ll only disagree with what was said as capitalism allowing self -expression and individualism. That’s what I thought too until I read what Oscar Wilde wrote, saying that people take up trades with the aim for money but without it people would do things purely and for the sake of doing it such that they have passion in doing it. I really love this video. It brings clarity.
Great video!
Not sure if it's been written in the comments because i didn't see it but until a few years ago Black Friday wasn't even a thing in Australia and now it's yet another thing that we're copying from the Americans. Not that I don't like America but it's part of your history, not mine. But it's crazy just how pervasive the concept of getting a good deal is. So we had to implement it here too, obviously. Fyi i didn't participate in the sales 🙂
Wow! I knew it was bad, but I didn’t know it was this bad! Thank you!
Thank you very much! Just stumbled upon your channel and am so happy to have found you!
I love this video
Omg yes. My channel discusses this weird reality too
This is flat out wrong. The acquisition of wealth and the strength of the individual is what built capitalism and the industrial revolution. What we in the West have had for 40 years is a state machine that has trampled on those trying to do well for themselves. The classic socialist A and B deciding what C should do for D while taking their cut. If seeking your own wealth is greedy and selfish, what does that make those who feel like they can take it away without any input into the creation of it? If the state would stop stealing from people while operating outright fascism, the populous at large would be far more wealthy, agreeable and charitable. The current conditions of 'dog eat dog' only exist when the pie given to the dogs is shrinking.
This speaks from my heart. 🇯🇲
Very eye opening. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for this video and putting to words a growing feeling of frustration with this system and unconscious habits!
I disagree with your take on musicians. They and all artists are just as important if not more so than ‘activists (my shade goes towards modern ones)’. As far as humanity goes back music and art has been the healer of wounds. They make is know we're not alone, and art mediums are one of the VERY few things humanity still unites on. Look at fandoms for example. If we didn't have art, what would any of us have to talk about besides politics and misery? All other joys have been ripped from our culture as Western humans. Even family has been painted as this thing that betrays you and hurts you, children as a misery. Giving your money to an artist is showing them support. It's connection, respect, and an energy exchange. Edit: Vision boards are great too. Mine don't look like that… I don't need fancy cars or money… I have “luxury travel” because I want to learn culture and meet new people, I want to connect with my ancestors and my roots. I have glamourous things because I was always told I was a demon who would become nothing… I want to prove them wrong and give others hope, to show that the impossible is possible and to never let evil screw them up. This video feels so pessimistic 😭 I'm trying to watch but I don't think I can
beautiful
Amazing video thank you ❤ I just sold a load of things on vinted and purchased on there too and it felt really good plus I got some quality pieces. Felt good to let go of more then I need to people who will use and enjoy them. But the biggest thing is not having surplus in the first place and this is something I have been working on for a while, it ebbs and flows but I am consuming far less than I was and I am also enjoying being more creative with that.
The odd one out might be blind people, I’m thinking of Gordy in STNG, Cyclops (?) in X Men, and Daredevil. This though has its own issues, such as relying on augments, super powers, and not really covering the range of partially sighted and blind folks.
S w a b 's second phase grooming for the elimination of non corporate small businesses. Like the invention of a virus, this provides control of individual's activities. They're playing it nice....for now.
thank you
Well said! I'm glad to see more and more people are starting to understand these things. each one of us should be trying to improve everyone else life, and other the same. Unity is the original blueprint but we have gotten so far away from it!
👏👏👏👏👏
It’s so enriching to my soul to see likeminded individuals. It makes the stance for self liberation even more motivating to me. I’m so glad we’re breaking free from these systemically structures put upon us. I wish this hits many people souls.
Once upon a time, not long ago, many but not all women painted their own fingernails. They had a few bottles of polish and one bottle of polish remover on a dresser or in their bathroom. All of the sudden, short nails became unsightly, and plain, unpainted nails were unfeminine, odd, and strange. It became a requirement to glue on long talons. Then the long talons required stripes. Polka dots. Iridescent rainbows. Glitter. Sequins. Rhinestones. Rocks. Silver and gold piercings. Silver and gold chains. Nail salon workers labor on the hands and feet of customers as they all breathe in toluene, formaldehyde, and dibutyl phthalate that cause "headaches, dizziness, and numbness; irritated eyes, nose, throat, and lungs; damage to liver and kidneys; and harm to unborn children during pregnancy." Thank you for this excellent video, Sarah Maria. Peaceful 2025 💗
My goal is to completely and absolutely detach and return back to nothingness as in the goal was to reach a common ground - and a public commune’ where communication and dialogue lead and collective responsibility and cohesion without absolute uniformity yet now, My dream is to absolutely detach just don't have the courage or sure fire method to say fuck with all of it and end my being here. Never even think of me, I was never here
Thank you so much for speaking about these things , you’re doing such an amazing service for the world .
I don't know why your video came up in my feed but I'm happy it did. Great delivery and food for thought 🤔.
Sorry to bring up religion but this year I became Muslim. Religion doesn’t work for some people and that’s totally ok, im just saying it has worked for me. A few key themes of the religion are intentionality, simplicity, and community. The biggest theme is kind of “dark” but has given me the most peace. It’s the concept that this life (dunya) is just a test. How we make our money, spend our time/wealth, and how we treat others… it will all determine where we go when we die. We are promised that through treating others and the earth with love and respect that we will spend eternity in paradise. Essentially, why have a short life of hedonistic wealth and actions when you can eventually spend eternity in paradise living a fulfilling life. I mend my clothing instead of buying new, I donate more, I buy organically/locally/halal food and items, and I’m trying to be more active in my community. It’s helped me do more and break out of being hyper independent. Peace and love to all❤️
really good video
wow
I had good friends and friend groups ages 12-17. Only materialistic things I wanted were like perfume, pencils, and some video games. Then people started working and moving. I moved. It's hard making friends. I've been struggling NOT buying stuff to give me a little rush, which I never really had hanging with friends. Individualist culture is just a lie to normalize exploitation and keep us from sticking together.
It was tough to watch this video, because just listening to the truth really made me think of my own consumeristic behaviours! Well-done.
without knowing it you just described doaist philosophy
It really is a very funny little paradox we’ve found ourselves in. The concept of the ‘main character’ was initially supposed to add weight to existence, but when you’re surrounded by people who each think they’re the main characters of their lives, it doesn’t feel that personal, or special anymore, does it? It just feels like a joke - a lie we keep telling ourselves just to substantiate existence. If the main character is everyone, it’s no one . great video btw ! <3
Love when people talk about this from a grounded and approachable standpoint and it’s not labeled as hippie
Sarah Maria is allowing us to view the profound weakness of character elites possess. They want YOU to feel bad about the world THEY created. Blaming and weakness are the foundations of evil.
This rhetoric is about creating the capitalism that has a tightly sealed 2 class system. Perfecting the concentration of wealth is called.... "Communism" and it can only be established with an overreaching reaching government and military.
Downfall such as Rome, Greece? Histrionics is the new propaganda. It works on people who know very little.
Thank you for sharing this insightful and powerful talk. I am with you and live in alignment with what you've shared. Love and gratitude.
Thank you for this enlightening video. You make a number of important points. I think the underlying issue is unconscious lack of self-worth. This pervades every corner of human civilization because of general ignorance of the human soul which is the source of unconditional value.
I won’t buy second-hand clothes anymore. I bought so many second-hand clothes on Vinted that ended up being damaged or the wrong size. I’ve decided that it will be more responsible for me to buy a small quantity of new clothes that fit me, can be returned if something is wrong, and come with a guarantee. For example, I went to a shop and tried on a T-shirt. Later, I bought the same T-shirt second-hand online. Although it was labeled the same size as the one in the shop, it turned out to be much bigger. Now, I’m really struggling to resell this T-shirt. Buying second-hand can also be a consumerism trap. We might end up spending more and buying more just because second-hand items are usually cheaper. As a result, many of us fill our wardrobes with clothes we don’t wear because they don’t fit well, and we bought them just because they were cheap.
I appreciate your long-form and thought-provoking content. Keep up the good work.
I know that hope isn't a strategy. However you give me hope; your message is so beautiful and informed. I wish you well.
Same with food and restaurants.
I don’t buy luxury brands at all. However, sometimes when I wear something branded (even like let’s say, Nike) I’ve say to myself “would I like this jumper (e.g.) if the Nike logo was missing? Probably not. Crazy!
Politics for people who couldn't afford university. The Hyoer Individualists who created mass consumption were Carnegie, Ford, etc. Nothing to do with the likes of EVERYONE ELSE.
This was a great, class conscious video, thank you! As a marxist I'm very happy to see more people become aware of how capitalism works and influences all of us
it is so important to organize!!! i find that so many people are class conscious but they still are not doing anything. there is no point in knowing something if you do nothing about it.
Incredible work
