Well between your excellent presentation and my 25 years spent in auto electric I am now feeling like a child that is starting all over again. Let me try & explain. Like many of your followers I have a fair amount of mechanical/electrical experience developed over many years working in the automotive trade plus 20 years in the USN working Aviation Electrical so at 79 yo I usually am successful in troubleshooting and repairs of whatever it is I get myself involved in - till now.. This should be so simple I'm somewhat embarrassed to post it. I'm not talking about a complex circuit on a late model vehicle - I'm talking about a 2019 Cub Cadet zero turn mower with a Kohler 22hp 7000 series engine that cranks at proper rpm but won't light off. It has an MDI ignition system - about as simple a system as one can get. Even I know it takes air, fuel, and ignition for combustion. Think I can rule out air as I'm still breathing ok. Using a ignition spark plug tester I verified no spark. I removed ground leads from both coils - still no spark. I replaced coils - same result (no spark). Next I took new spark plug and grounded it to engine and discovered a "weak" spark. Due to smell of fuel (old) I replaced carburetor and gas - no joy. I shot starting fluid into throttle bore - no help. I'm still thinking that I'm just not getting a strong enough spark to light the fire. I've gone as far as removing the flywheel to inspect magnets for the stator and also measure stator resistance - all good. The only thing I'm unsure of is the external magnet on the fly wheel that triggers the coil - do they ever go bad? Thanks for whatever help you and/or others can render. Mike

I think I have the same problem with my Kohler engine. I can’t get a spark.

What about engine oil?
The oil is added into the fuel, and lubricates it and does not burn fully. this is why 2 strokes are smoky.
A 2 stroke diesel doesnt uses fuel oil mix, a 2 cycle diesel uses a lubricating system just like a 4 stroke does
