I just happened on your site Veronica, fun to listen to you specially since I am from Goteborg, Sweden. NowI live with my husband in Rhode Island, USA. He comes from Minneapolis and we met in Chamonix skiing. It was very romantic and we now have been married for 55 years and still ski - cross country. Be careful. I also watch Cecilia Blomdahl who lives on Svalbard and she is also from Goteborg.

How does a person get to Greenland? Ive always wondered

Lack of knowledge, only 3 months ago a scientist got mauled in east Greenland.

On Svalbard, they advise/require citizens on foot outside Longyearbyen city limits to carry a rifle. If it is legal where you are, I would certainly advise the same. At least carry bear spray, and be very aware of your surroundings. Polar bears aren't like the easily scared small bears we have here in CA. They are more like the grizzlies up north--big, fearless and incredibly powerful. Be careful!

Well, at Svalbard/Spitsbergen, If leaving the center of Longyearbyen or Russian Barentburg, you must have a rifle with you as ice bear protection. And they can be quite big and hungry. In the early 1980s, a year before I came there, one came into the mining village of Marmorilik, and they had to shoot it. And according to the east-coast sled patrol, Sirus, when the bears broke into their ol' hunting huts, the first item eaten was mackerel in tomato sauce ;-)

Vi hade kanske byggt en igloo tillsammans och bott i den. Varje natt hade jag och isbjörnen legat och kramats och den hade varit så mjuk och hårig. Älska isbjörnar! 🐻‍❄❤ Men om du vill leva ett långt liv ska du förmodligen inte lyssna på mig. 🤠

Be careful! Polar bears do not take prisoners! And you will not outrun a bear.

Veronica, if that polar bear is near your village, it is most likely a young bear, drawn by the scents of food or fish waste, and has no fear of man. Out going around like that by yourself, with no gun or like I said before, a can of oily sardines to spread on the road, to keep him occupied in order to get away, your inviting trouble. Also check out around your house before you go outside, as they come and go at random and have been known to tear doors off houses. Polar bears have been seen as far south as St. John's Newfoundland in the spring drifting on arctic pack ice. Remember your dealing with an Apex hunter/killer, that can sprint up to 50kms hr. I admire people who live in foreign Countries, especially where the language you speak is not the language spoken where you travel!
