Reimagining Schools: Serving Newcomers, Building Belonging, and Activating Community (Part 2)
In the second part of this two-part series, we offer practical resources, tools, and models to help bring this vision to life. We also demonstrate the profound possibilities created when passionate people take action and highlight the powerful work of educators building belonging in their communities.
Migration and demographic change present an opportunity to reimagine school systems. By prioritizing students' identity development and community formation skills, we can create equitable environments where all students thrive.
Schools are more than just places of education; they also serve as essential community support pillars, offering meals, child care, and health resources. Though schools often act as community hubs in practice, the theories behind how many schools operate focus solely on academic outcomes. It is time to reimagine how schools might serve the broader population, how local organizations might facilitate education, and how we might activate community members as partners in life-long learning.

This is so unfair to American citizens. We can’t get these benefits as working class people. Why give people that haven’t paid taxes so much advantage. Now we know how they come to America and outperform everyone. They get a leg up.

Not ALL people are valuable contributors. And children should belong to their families but the poor families in Latin America have children without considering they will not be able to provide for them, then they send them away hoping these adolescents will get to a safe place where they will work and send money back to the family of origin. Unfortunately, I have seen many kids who come to join gangs, who know nothing about the school compulsory attendance law, they don't want to go to school, they just want to work and make money, the relatives who end up taking the kids to provide guardianship end up, in many cases, with an unruly child, who brings problems to the hosting family. This is not an easy decision, this is not a one-way road, I admire people who want to help, people who want to believe that immigration is the solution to a problem and not just a change of hands of a major issue that ends up affecting the hosting community, that is, all of us.

If these vaccines do not prevent you from getting COVID-19 nor does it keep you from spreading it how is this going to stop the spread of COVID-19? If all it does is mitigate symptoms so that when you get it it’s not so bad if that’s all it does I’ll take NyQuil instead because that’s all it does is mitigate symptoms. Either you doctors are bold face lying to the public via TH-cam or you have been manipulated to parrot it out this misleading statement that the only thing that will stop this pandemic is a vaccine.
