If you can dig up old interviews, Mikael said that when he started using in-ears, and it ruined his technique. Damn shame. It's evident if you compare this with the Wacken show.

he really didn’t sound like he wanted to be up there and i don’t see anyone talking about it, but it’s good that this was the show that ended his death metal chapter in his life to an extent beyond playing his pre 2008 Opeth tunes, I’m glad he’s doing what makes him happy so good on you Akerfeldt!
I thought slightly the same after first listening. Bought the DVD when it came out. It´s only wasting space in my board. Even if his death-metal chapter may have ended. It´s a butt kick for a fan listening to this. Good on him for playing good music in other genres.
I know this is older, but I think after the 2008 performance, last Bloodbath EP, and Watershed, he changed his vocal technique I think in an effort to preserve what growls he still wanted to do for a long time. Not to mention wanting to make the singing more of a focus. He probably wasn't going as hard here as he used to in an effort to be careful. He's said in the past that technique wasn't really what he did to start back in the day and it probably took a toll after all those years.
His vocals are shot compared to the Wacken show.

I only thought this was a bad vocal performance when I thought that Mikael was on the album "Nightmates made flesh". Early on, I did not realize that bloodbath had a different vocalist at the time.
It was the vocalist of Hypocristy on NMF, Peter Tagtren - Akerfeldt was just the live member, essentially.
@@daxpwnsyouall yes I know this now, mikael was their initial vocalist for the first two records, then the 4th, then he left again.
Mikael's vocals have almost nothing in common with Tagtgren's, both are kickass vocalists.

The Wacken show was much better, vocally. I know Mickeal's voice, thanks to heavy smoking< started to suffer, and now, he sings totally clean, with Opeth. His growling days are over. Damn sad. I loved his death metal voice.
