Two S2-T’s and at least two Cal Fire helos all relayed from Sacramento for a fuel stop that day. I watched them arrive from my front lawn inbound from Sacramento and noticed them all take off a short time later and fly South. I noticed several aircraft do this over a few days. The C-212 and DHC-4A are temporary residents while they’re here running skydiving drills. They’ll show up a few times a year for a week or two and train most days. There are also marked Air Force planes that come occasionally for the same training. The Army, Marines and Air Force all occasionally conduct skydiving exercises here. Depending on wind they’ll sometimes exit the aircraft right above my house and the wind will carry them South to the airport. They’ll sometimes do night training exercises too. It’s interesting to watch. I also like to plane spot here, especially during fire events. I’ve seen numerous types of aircraft. The now retired P2-V and DC-6, the P-3 Orion, C-130, BAE-146, MD-87, 737, CH-47, Skycrane, Blackhawk and others and of course the 2 Cal Fire S2-T’s and OV-10 that are stationed here. Also, the flight path for LAX departing traffic often runs right over this area. I especially watch for the Emirates A-380 that flies over often en route to Dubai. When I do get down to LAX I always try to watch them land there from the park across from In-N-Out.
I saw the Siller helicopters skycrane at ptv last year and put it on my channel. If you ever see the Calfire C-130 at porterville you should post a video of your own. Lots of people including myself would like to see that. The C-212 and DHC-4A are training paratroopers??? COOL.
I’d like to see the Cal Fire C-130 here too. The Coulson C-130 occasionally shows up here. I keep an eye on FlightRadar24 and I’m close enough to the airport to hear a lot of the traffic when I’m at home. In fact I can hear the CASA C-212 flying loops overhead as I type this. I do have a few short video clips of an Erickson MD-87, a P-3 Orion, a Neptune BAE-146 and CF S2-T’s taking off. I also have video of two Canada Air Super Scoopers scooping water from the local lake a few years ago. They came by while I was fishing there. Porterville has specific facilities dedicated to skydiving training and often hosts training events. I know the Wings of Blue demonstration team cadets have conducted training exercises here. My parents have talked to airport staff that told them that there were military teams conducting regular training here. Here’s a link to one article about it: www.usma.edu/news/west-point-news/west-point-parachute-team-conducts-initial-skydives-the-plebe-class
@ Not a short drive for you, but if you want to see some really cool stuff up close, go to Mojave air and space port . Normally closed to the public but they have an event called plane crazy Saturday the second Saturday of each month. You just have to check their online Calendar to see if it’s happening. Great opportunity for general aviation spotting. Usually some rare small aircraft such as weird long ez variants.
It’s less than a two hour drive although I rarely get that way these days, I’ve been by there numerous times. The last time I was by there was when I went to Vegas a couple of years ago. I wasn’t aware the public could visit. Also, once a year a group of privately owned mostly former Soviet WWII era warbirds show up here along with other random planes. The last few years there’s been a couple of P-51’s with the group and other random small aircraft from that era. It’s usually sometime in mid Spring.
@ Only once a month. mojavemuseum.org/plane-crazy-saturday/
KPTV....my home airport. As a teenager, I used to work for the company that contracted TBM's and F8F Bearcats to CalFire and the USFS there during the mid '60's.
I didn’t know TBM’s were used for that. Cool!
@@TomsAviationChannel9813 We lost a TBM and pilot up in the narrow mountainous area northeast of Springville, CA when they had a fire there. It was quite awhile ago and prior to the mandatory use of twin engine (and now turbine only) aircraft. The bomb bay doors failed to open.
@@randym7511 That’s too bad. Only around 40 of the TBM’s are still flying. Maybe one will end up on this channel at some point…maybe.
When a UH-1 flies over everyone knows it even without seeing it!!!!
@@douglashoff95 It is a very recognizable sound! Probably one of the most recognizable in aviation. Thank you for watching!
The blue-yellow aircraft looks as an experimental, is not it? Great compilation, my support and respect.
N78659 ( the blue and yellow one) is not registered with the FAA as an experimental aircraft. ( I had to look at the FAA's online database to make sure) . Glad you liked the video, Thanks so much for watching!
@ Copy that
Canadian here, retired RCAF. We had Trackers back in the late 70's for Maritime Patrol. I had know idea that they put turbines on them and are still flying. Brilliant!
@@bcmfin I don’t know how much longer they will be flying sadly. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Strange hearing a Tracker that doesn't cough, sputter, fart, pop.
@@crushingvanessa3277 LOL!
These S2Ts(?), do their wings still fold up?
I don't know. I'm pretty sure that feature isn't used if it is there.
Born and raised in Porterville. Took my first ever plane ride there during the Annual Porterville Fly-in in 1956. Flew into Porterville many times after I got my license in 1971. Had many flying trips there to visit my parents. I was flying out of CCB (Cable) in Upland, Ca and was aware the tower building at Cable had come from Porterville. Great memories from both airports.
PTV has some very unique aircraft. CASA C-212 Aviocar, DHC-4A, and so forth. Thanks so much for watching!
So you must remember the B17 firebomber there back in the 70s 😊
@@RamblerMan68 I remember the B-17. I'm a native of Porterville can got my private ticket there. As a teenager, I worked for the company that contracted TBM's and F8F Bearcats and maintenance for the fire services. The B-17 flew in occasionally but wasn't based there. The TBM's and Bearcats were. We also had the photo recon-version of the Northrop P-61 Black Widow fly in one day. It was the only airworthy P-61 in the world. It was lost in a crash some months later.
I'm also a native of Porterville. My first ride was at the Moonlight Fly-In in '61. It was in a shiny new straight tail C-150. I later soloed a shiny new '66 C-150. Got my ticket in '68. My instructor was the late Ray Woodmansee (Ray's Aviation) then Eddie Wood. I knew and flew with most of the people at the entire airport! My check pilot was Claire Coe. Those were the days of those magnificent BIG round engines! I can still feel the ground shaking!!! I also worked for three season with M&W Flying Service. That was Pat Tomlinson.
@randym7511 I was gonna ask.if you knew Pat...my dad lost part of his thumb working on Pats Bell 47...G2 maybe? Wow...time travel, hahs
Nice to see Hueys in use.
@@viperq Totally! Glad you liked the video.
Gotta love a round motor Grumman still alive and working for a living. Not so much love for the fires it is working on. -- Wait a minute, are they remotored with turboprops? Yep, that's what the description says!
Hopefully when they finally retire a decent number will go to museums. I don't know for sure but I don't think the job they currently do would be doable without the benefit of the turboprops. 1,200 gallons is pretty heavy.
@@TomsAviationChannel9813 When I was a child in the 60s with Dad in the Navy these had their factory issue radial engines, so that remains what my brain defaults to.
@@scottfw7169Upon further research the air-cooled radial piston engines have been used for firefighting. The turboprop engine seen above is the Honeywell TPE331, similar to what's in the Rockwell Turbo Commander or Dornier 228. The increase in HP with the new engines isn't actually that much. Thanks so much for watching!
I used to watch the old boxcars and B17s fire planes fly in the 1970
@@jasonclark3127 That’s cool! I wish the B-17 wasn’t so rare now.
@ ya in the late 70 s and 80’s there was a b17 it was loaded from rear in that liberator was there to if you watch the movie Always that boxcar was there to
Porterville also had an F7F in 1974-75 or so, when I first started with Sequoia NF. That thing was a Corvette, or maybe even a Ferrari.
@@skydiverclassc2031 Not many are airworthy today. Practically none in museums.

Old C1/ S2 CREWMAN HERE. LOVE TO SEE THEM STILL DOING THEIR PART.
Glad you enjoyed the video! These aircraft are really cool. Have a good day!
I used to have fun talking to the C1 Mamie guys.. ADR's had a much different tool box. I still refer to the ADR screwdriver 😂. ( the huge old twofisted pry bar)
@ what does ADR stand for?
@@TomsAviationChannel9813 ADR was the Navy designation for Aviation Machinist Mate Reciprocating (piston engines) I was an ADJ, I worked on Jet engines. Later on, as the piston engines were going away, the designation was shortened to AD.
@@BuggsOgden Interesting... And I thought ADR only stood for Air data inertial reference unit.
Classic Cherokee
Piper has made a ton of the PA-28's . One of the most common general aviation aircraft worldwide. Still not as produced as the 172 though.
@@TomsAviationChannel9813 True!!!!!!!!
Thanks for this Great footage!!!!!!!!!!!!! Porterville's has interesting activity/aircraft. The beacon tower at Cable Airport (KCCB) in Upland, CA came from Porterville Airport in 1954.
Interesting, I didn't know that!
I'm a Communications lineman in Tulare County. I was down the road, West on Tea pot dome, I saw these Bois taking off. If I remember correctly the OV-10 launched first, the second S-2 Tracker took off like a bat outa hell, with this hard left break south, it looked cool. They also had a UH-60 parked when I passed, But the airway cafe has a great breakfast. Fill the belly up, and let's fly...
I missed the OV-10. Fun fact about the tracker, they were originally designed as anti submarine warfare aircraft. Thanks for watching!
@@TomsAviationChannel9813my favorite fact about the OV-10 is that apparently you can parachute out of the back!
@@RobWormaldPlus Not much room in the back of an OV-10 . I can confirm this; for a different video last year I got to see one on the ground ( not as good as the video above): th-cam.com/video/Ku2YsuH68ww/w-d-xo.html, Anyone parachuting out the back would be very cramped sitting in there. From a forum I read, it looks like the pilot would pitch the nose up and the jumpers would just kind of fall out. " You don't "jump" out of an OV-10. More like you are "dumped" out of an OV-10" . Nowadays the back is just used for storage. Thanks for watching!!!
@@TomsAviationChannel9813 That's what people told me too. 4 recon soldiers jammed in there and went out on static line.
@@skydiverclassc2031Doesn't sound fun. Very cramped with 4 people.
You haven't lived until you have Portervilled!

Valiant effort,too little too late!., DC-10s, 747s
The 747-400 Supertanker ( N744ST) was retired in 2021. It hasn't been used since. As far as I know it's the only 747 firefighting plane ever. There are a few DC-10 Air Tankers though.
I believe Cal Fire also suffered budget cuts.
