How I Remove Stains and Fix the Vintage Linens I Buy
มุมมอง 359หลายเดือนก่อน
Sigh. Twix. Really?!? Oh, well. I’ve had a lot of questions about how I get the stains out of the linens I thrift. Sadly, there is not one true method. And since, chances are, you have no idea what the stain is or how long it’s been there, it can be a challenge. Products I use include: Bleach Oxi Clean Woolite ( to wash them in) Follow me on Instagram and check out my Etsy shop. I have a new li...

Using Patterns to Create Clothing Inspired by Ready-Wear
มุมมอง 3494 หลายเดือนก่อน
I can rarely bring myself to pay the prices of ready-wear clothing and I try to never buy fast fashion. I’m a firm believer that you can find a pattern for just about any piece of clothing you see in stores. Sure, you may have to make some adjustments, but by sewing (or upcycling something thifted, for that matter), you can create clothing that fits you and is inspired by ready-wear for a fract...

Whats the most curly knit fabric? Even when it's sewn together. I'm looking for a knit that miss behaves staying flat (its this property of the fabric that I want to use to my advantage) but I mostly work with wovens, and I'd love a few recommendations.
Nice video. Thank you!
Thank you 😊
love it!
I also came from Charlie's page. I just retired and am super excited to get back into sewing, but it's been about 40 years so your videos are a wonderful refresher course! ❤
That looks so good! I would definitely buy tht from a store
Thank you. Awesome video!
Hi Carrie just nipped over from Charlie’s Stitchery. Mainly because she said if we wanted to make things then to pop over. So here I am. Need to make a pattern from a garment that I have worn for so long it is now very threadbare off to make a coffee and will be right back.xxxx
7:40-9:35: I appreciate your thoroughness in pointing out the stitch icons and explaining their functionality. Thank you for providing such detailed information.
Subscribed per the nice woman at The Stitchery☺️
I love the embroidered linens! It would be super helpful if you would add the Etsy shop you mentioned to your channel links, as I'd love to see what you turn these into!
@@lynnephelps2370 carriemeawaytx.etsy.com
Thanks! Now add it to your channel "about" info, where your channel description and social links are!
Your cat talks to you like mine talks to me! Mine is black/white, a tuxedo cat. I love the old linens, but sometimes if you buy them online you get odors and sometimes it's hard to get rid of them. I will only buy them now if they say no odors. I have learned!! Ha! I did see another You Tuber who said for stains, she put in the sink some Cascade dishwashing liquid and Biz with the hottest water and let it sit for 20-30 minutes to get the stains out. I tried that on some and it worked. I couldn't find the Biz, so I used Oxi Clean powder instead of and it took the stains out. I have some more I need to do. I love the old linens, they are so pretty, and thanks for the advice!!
So sweet that you call the linens your cat’s using as “my stuff”.
Love the one with the pink rose
That is helpful -- thanks! A question, and sorry if I missed it, but does the direction of the stretch when sewing on knits? If so, what are some of the best ways to think about putting different pieces together?
I'm not sure what you're asking. All knits have crossways (horizontal) stretch but it is important to have the crossways stretch (selvedge to selvedge) going sideways around the body for the greatest comfort. Knit patterns may be too tight if the crossways stretch runs vertically on the garment. Many knits don't stretch much vertically. 4-way (or vertical AND horizontal stretch) is less common, and needed for swimwear, yoga pants, leotards, and other close-fitting items designed for movement. So yes, the direction you orient your pattern pieces is important. HTH!
@@anirabunbury4940 the stretch should always go around your body. Normally, this is selvage to selvage, so if using pattern pieces, the grainline arrow should be parallel to the selvage. When sewing seams together, I have found that it does not matter in which direction you sew. Just don’t pull on your fabric as you sew or you will probably end up with a wavy seams.
@@lynnephelps2370 Thanks!
@@carriemeaway9837 thanks! I've only ever sewn with woven, and only occasionally so I'm looking forward to widening my repertoire and being able to upcycle some of my older stuff.
Wow super cute ..you girls are definitely creative love watching both of you
This was a perfect tutorial because had you not demonstrated the armhole measurement, I would have done it wrong. Great info!!
Love the colors of the sheet.
Love it great idea
The blue rick rack shirt is super cute
Is your kitty right Twix or left Twix? 😂 🤪 your outfit is cute!
HEY kislux !! I have been watching you for years and im so proud of where you have made it! I love you so much! Also thanks for making my day <3
I collect vintage sheets which I turn into PJs for the grandbabies and myself.
What do you use to remove stains like you show here?
Bleach on white fabrics. Oxi Clean Max Force on the rest. Wash afterwards in Woolite.
Nice finds! I agree with repurposing. ❤ Thank you for sharing. What is the name of your Etsy shop?
carriemeawaytx.etsy.com
Wow, first time viewing your channel and you are so talented. Such cute outfits! You keep smacking your fabric - is it misbehaving? 😆😉👍🏻
Carrie, How DO you get the stains out! I hesitate to buy linens with stains because I haven't been very successful in removing them. Thank you.

Great tutorial
😍😍😍
When I was first married, I made lovely curtains from sheets!
I could not find that one piece pants pattern that you showed. Can you let me know the number and if it is out of print? Thank you!

how do you determine grain on sheets? LOVE the channel btw
The horizontal grain is slightly stretchier than the vertical grain. Go to fabric store and practice on new, bolted fabric. Pull on the known vertical and horizontal grains until you can differentiate. Vertical grain is equivalent to the straight-of-grain marking on patterns. All fabrics react the same way, even knits. Knits do, however, also have an up or down to them. For up-down orientation, look at construction/ orientation of the knit stitches. Observe loops in a bulky sweater to know which way is UP. Some fabrics, like corduroy, velvet and flannel have "nap". Run your hand lightly over the vertical grain and you will notice the surface 'fuzz' moving up/down. Usually a napped fabric's 'nap' should run, lay, downward. Make sure that the 'nap' orientation is consistent or the garment will look weird.
Sometimes I can actually see the weave of the threads. Usually, I just go off the seams at the sides.
Is the Simplicity pattern for the no side seam pants still available in stores? Tia

@carriemeaway9837 thank you, I will check it out.
Your video is so inspiring! I thrift sheets too, and love your beautiful makes. Please do more videos like this.

Great ways to use sheets! You did a great job matching patterns to the fabrics. I enjoyed this video.
I always look for sheets while thrifting. They are great for clothing and lounge wear and I use them for quilt backs.
I have the same tree skirt...I love it and use it every xmas
Oh my goodness the cherry pillowcases are adorable! Absolutely perfect for shorts!
I thrift sheets all the time for practice and end up wearing a lot of them. I wish you would have tried them on!!
Thank you for all the inspiration for using old sheets!
I swear I have seen all of these in my mums laundry hamper when I was a kid in the 90’s
Such lovely linens! I can’t wait to see what you sew!
I'm excited to see what you do with that round tablecloth, specially if the stains don't come out. I think it would make a beautiful wrap top too, but it would require some smart positioning of the pattern pieces, which will be fun to see.
I just made a circle skirt from a 1960s sheet. I’m short, and the sheet was large enough that I was able to get a floor length skirt without a seam. I started middle school in 1969. I am in love with textiles from late 60s through early 70s. It’s always a joy to find those sheets. unfortunately, this sheet had a little polyester in it, but since it won’t be tightly fitting my body, it likely won’t make me hot. No, you can make a half circle or 3/4 circle skirt if you need to remove a stain. I don’t like cutting up some precious handwork but much of it won’t get any love in a drawer. I do have textiles from other countries which are of a type that are no longer practice, and I don’t cut them. I imagine myself a textile collector on a very small scale.
What a darling blouse. Thank you so much for the inspiration! Gives me the confidence to try something similar.
how did you do the bias binding for the sleeves? it looks seemless
I just sewed the strip of bias fabric around the armhole just like you would a sleeve.
I came from your sisters channel and have now subscribed to yours. I wish I could sew . I want to try as I loved the shorts
Refashioning large men's shirts is just the best. I just love reusing the button placket and cuffs and all that. Plus, the material is often really nice. Thrift stores are full of quality/brand name men's shirts, whereas good quality stuff for women is very scarce.
Cute! Too bad about the focusing issues.
