This is my Fourth devlog for my RPG game, where you play as a post apocalyptic Survivor with no memory, in a world filled with junk robots who mostly ignore you, and throughout the game you uncover more and more about that world.
In this video I show my first impression of UE5 and trying navigating the game engine without prior programming experience.

Golden Hour, Dark Parables: Requiem For The Forgotten Shadow
Looks like a pretty nice game. As an indie game developer myself, I feel your pain and struggle 🥲. So I wish you good luck in achieving what you want, and a lot of willpower to reach there. 💪🦾
thanks, i really appreciate it, the struggle is real specially on the programing side 🥲but so far every problem i faced got solved thanks to youtube lol but it still at the beginning, so i need all the luck out there lol 😅
@@ibrabdo For me it's more struggling with the visuals (modeling especially) 😄 And yeah glad there is TH-cam stuff that can solve most of the problems. On the other hand, without all of this, there won't be any sense of achievement 😅. So luck and determination are all that is needed 💪
i remember back in the 2000's i had to save a fortune to buy a book with a CD attached with couple tutorials lol we went a loooong way since then
Sadly I wasn't around in programming at that time, I was still in school 😅 But it sounds like a fun thing to do, I guess getting one of these CDs was like an achievement itself 😁.
I hate thinking of game names. all the good obvious ones are already used for something
I know Right? it s very hard to come on a proper genuine name :(
Olya
Stranded Olya
Glad to see your journey, really enjoying these.
Thanks 😊 glad you liked it 😁
👏👏
😊
Home stranded? Stranded Home? Awayward?
Cool keep them coming 😊
@@ibrabdo alright... Ermn. Wayward, Gone stranded, Re-stranded?
I liked the "gone" thanks I'll add this word to the mix 😊
Hey everyone I'm reaching out for some creative input. My game, previously titled "Stranded Away," is in need of a new name. Any suggestions?
Nice approach keep up the good work
Thank you, really appreciated 😊
This is really inspiring, I also have artistic background, and always thought that the only way I can contribute in making a story is either to write music to someone's game or to write a novel. I've started to write one, but guess what, there is also a third option. I'm learnig how to make my own game :) Struggle is real, and it's great that you show how HARD it is. My game is not going to be anything fancy, but I'm focusing on a story anyway, because that is what matter the most for me. Just... keep... going :)
Awesome, with a great music and a good story u could do some sort of interactive novel that rely mainly on the story telling with a bit of gameplay that doesn't require much of programing skills, best of luck man
@@ibrabdo great story and good music would even be better :D thank you!
Little Nova
Liked the "Nova" how about "Stranded Nova"
@@ibrabdo I'm also learning about game development in unity do you have a tips and tricks about it and you sticks to that stranded word
@@harimrlocal i think ive been with the word Stranded that im stuck with it 😅 untill something better popsup lol. good u r learning unity i used it a bit in the past, but my advice is to avoid using any external code or library while learning the engine, and when applying tutorials watched on youtube after finishing each one, delete the project and try redoing it from memory, to make sure u undrstood the core concept of the tutorial

Full time game dev here. Normally you do not start with the assets, because where do you want to use assets when there is no game... But as an Indie Dev that is fine, because no body pays you for what you do so you can plan your time how you want
True, add to that for me art creation is a fun process either characters, environment or prop art, for example there were a lots of vegetation, rock and tree elements in the marketplace, yet i went with making those from zero, and as u said the best part (and the worst part) of it that is nobody paying you doing that so u can plan your time the way u see it fit :D
So you have all this experience in the game industry and you don't even know that games need people who want to play them? It's fine since you say you're making this for fun, but would anyone actually pay to play what you're making?
What made think that i dont know that? the fact that i'm spending so much valuable time making these Devlogs and posts proves that i want my game to be played lol :)
All the devlogs have been incredibly fun and interesting to watch. The art style is usually pixel art for all the devlogs I follow so this is my first FULL 3d art indie game that I'm following. I always knew 3d was hard but watching you struggle and overcome it bit ny bit despite having quite a lot of experience, added with the zero knowledge of coding (same), it made if bith funny and encouraging. It also made me look at 3d games in a new light as I was watching the #1 devlog and appreciate them a LOT more. Keep going at it! Game idea is great and can't wait to see how mucj your skills progress, which'll show in the game and devlogs!
Doing a 3D game without using much of library is quite tough since u need to do all the elements yourself, but since I'm an artist i wanted to go this way because i enjoy it a lot :D Thank you for your support! That's the kind of comments that really helps me continue making the game! And it's only the beginning :)
Can't wait for the next video!
Thanks 😊 really appreciated
Very useful! Good luck 🍀
Thank you 😊 Glad you liked it
Cool! 👾
thanks saso :D
you give me inspiration too.
awesome! you can start developing your game :D
As an animator, I'm sure you already agree with me here, but the animations you downloaded and retargeted to your own model are floaty, stiff and unattractive, so I'm really hoping you are able to use them as a base but improve upon them dramatically with your preexisting skill set!
Hopefully that's the plan, especially for the main locomotion animations, but for now I'm using this one to test the game mechanics 😀
Thank you very mush for this tip, i had the exact problem for almost all my models
You are welcome! glad you liked it :)
Loved the video. I like that it's interesting and informative. I like that you started with the character. For the project I'm working on, I have an idea of who my characters are and what I want them to look like but I'm no artist. I can't wait to get them into the world and see them come to life just like your character!
Thank you 😊 Glad you liked it, i dont recommend anyone to start with the character design specially if it is the first attempt in making a game, in my case i had to redo character related work to many time when tryin appling it to the engine because the technical mistakes that i wasnt aware of, like the character mesh needed to be symmetrical so it could be rigged properly, and better staking for the UV unwrapping to maximize performance, and to split the character bodypart into pieces so i could switch between them when changing equipment in the game, and that the mesh topology of the character should not be spread evenly, and that it should be based on the muscle mass and joints to have a better looking animations without having broken joints and so on i could go for pages, BTW i checked ur Devlog good luck with ur game looking forward to see ur teleportation concept evolving
Noted! I'll keep that in mind when it's time to bring my characters into the game. I still need concept art and someone to do the modeling. But in my case, I think it's a good idea to make it functional before polishing it up. Also, thanks for the words of encouragement. Let's keep up the great work!@@ibrabdo
this is awesome
Thank you 😊 Glad you liked it
man this changed my whole perspective
Oh, glad it did 😁
This still is something I'm really struggling with. While the top method definitely looks a million times better than the bottom method. I'm still not really satisfied with it. If we bend our arm, the elbow kind of really pops out when full bend. I'm not quite there yet to have the topology and rig that does that while staying simple at the same time
I guess if u want more control over what part to poop out more then it could be handled with weight painting 🙂
Great editing as usual. Definitely stealing some of these techniques!
Thanks man, now I'm really looking forward to your next upcoming devlog to see what technique you used 😁😁😁
@@ibrabdo that might have to wait for the one after. I'm so sick of editing the one I'm working on now, just want to get it out 😂
Ahhh man I feel your pain, I'm working now on the next 3 videos and its driving me crazy 😅
@@ibrabdodo you usually batch them? I've done them start to finish one at a time so far. Wondered if that's not the optimal approach
i also do them that way from start to finish, but in threes so i wont be going back and forth from editing to game development, so 40 days editing and after that ill have 2 months to actually working on the game.
This looks gorgeous! Looking forward to learning about the world!
Thanks 😊 really appreciated
1:16 Is there a reason why a lot of people make a flat terrain, but add some elements to it to make it slightly hilly with a lot of elements. If I look at reality then this is only one among many landscape types.
it s basically a level design choice, i guess most of farming, hack and slash, and management games use flat terrain because it s necessary requirement for the gameplay so everything that needed to be farmed or enemy been slashed r clear and reachable, although RPG and puzzle games r the opposite because u use to terrain to craft ur story by hiding some item or button or hiding passage, and then u have the games types that comes in-between such as action RPG have the middle ground. So depends on your game design/level design u choose how to make the terrain :)
@@ibrabdo I also notice it in Minecraft builders. They go like: "Let's make the terrain not flat. Add some elevation to the scene to have some variance. Also add different point of interests and a skyline where larger things are in the back." Another thing they do is use random block palette to make things less uniform. The Game-landscape equivalent would be perlin noise for terrain height. This seems to be a handy simplification to get a more visually stimulating map compared to having everything completely flat. But since those are by now commonly used tactics, I appreciate people like bdoubleo100 who go a step further and try to mimic reality by understanding what is actually going on.
@@benrex777productions9 true, even tho when u have perlin noise kind of generated terrain it still feels flat even with different ups and downs in the skyline like in minecraft all the terrain is still gradually blended and accessable, that is why when it comes to that i respect Valhim because they manage to escape that with their latest biome "Mistland" where u have a lots of interest points that r not easily accessable but with a bit of gameplay a parkour u manage to reach it
@@ibrabdo I hope no game developer uses the simplest version of perlin noise for landscapes in their final game. But even with more advanced versions, they either don't have overhangs and straight edges or they use the 3D perlin noise which looks even weirder. With weird I mean non-natural. If done right by not even trying to attempt to make it look natural, then it can still look good. I just watched a bit of gameplay to get a feel of what the Mistland looks like. It seems like one reason why it works there is because of the low renderdistance due to the mist. Even though I love the devlog of the game sapiens, it really suffers from a lack of point of interest. It would probably be the opposite of the mistland because you have a far view but everything close by looks flat.
In Mistland they use the fog smartly as part of the game play. In order to hide a complex horizon. But in my game since it's Isometric I won't have this issue. And the Environment will be designed manually. with the gameplay and level design to be considered and it won't be procedual maybe the trees and other elements will be but not the terrain.
Your approach to the subject quite well. Bon courage.
merci :D
Very impressive keep up the good work
Thank you 😊 Glad you liked it
Keep on give updates bro .. its really useful
It's my pleasure, thank you I really appreciate it!
I like it, so useful

@@Da_Doge_Dev UE is free to use, and it has a node based programing system that built on top of C++ so even if u r not a C++ programmer u could use it, and i recommend if you r new to game development to use "UEFN" which is the same Unreal engine but with built-in library of all fortnite resources also free for commercial use
good luck on your game man! I love the visuals, it already looks like on a good path
Thank you 😊 Glad you liked it
It's an owl.
He is acting like one 😅
Great editing! I am taking notes and will be trying to take some lessons to my own devlog. 😃
Thanks man glad you liked it! i like your devlogs btw, can't wait to see the progress of ur game :D
@@ibrabdo thanks very much! We indie devs need to stick together. :)
@@JoeTheis we sure must stick together, it already feels lonely to be a solo developer 🥲
I think Aoo fits the artsytle of your character.
Thank you 😊 Glad you liked it
You have some awesome looking hair. Rejecting the advice of the people going before you and learning the hard way that they were correct all along is a mistake many people make. But I'm sure you learned a lot of things in that process.
Thanks i hope i wasn't going whiter thou 😅 True 🙂 and also since im an Artist I had to start with the Art part so i could feel invested and that im really doing this, Plus testing and applying tutorials using you own character somehow keeps me motivated to keep on going, the same goes for the environment elements and UIs 😄
@@ibrabdo I find that relateable. The ideal path is not necessarily the one which an individual is walking on for the longest. Especially in a creative sphere where upkeep of motivation and prevention of writers block is important. As far as I'm aware, defining the artstyle early on can help shape the entire game development, but the actual art should be done later down the line. PrismaticaDev talks about this in this video: _"Visuals and Aesththsthetics in my Game! [Prismatica DevLog #02]"_ At the time14:50 But he is also from an artist background like you so this defintely shapes his opinion somehow.
agreed, and BTW "PrismaticaDev " is one of my favorites devloger, his tutorials helped me a lot navigating my project @@benrex777productions9
@@ibrabdo I am not watching devlogs as reliable as I did a few years ago. Because of that I didn't keep up with all the videos of PrismaticaDev. Also my own journey of devlogging wasn't really compatible with his tutorials. I do everything myself with pygame and my game is pretty simple. Because of that tutorials on how to use game engines are not as interesting to me. But he is still an entertaining person who creates a nice game. Which is always great to watch.
@@benrex777productions9 very interesting, so u r making ur own engine? i find watching devlogs and other gamedevs progress very entertaining even tho they r using different engine or other methods 😊
Saw the first video a month ago and I've been waiting for this one. Looking great! I see you have someone doing the music for the videos... if you get to the point to start looking for an original soundtrack for the game, I specialize in medieval fantasy and/or orchestral music and would LOVE to work on this game since it looks so cool. You can find some of my work on my channel, but the best place to see more is the link to my demo reel and bio on my channel description. Keep up the great work!
Thank you really appreciated, ill let you know when i reach the pint of making music in the game :)

yes, maybe u ll try it out after a while and let me know how handy it is for 3d :)
Awesome work!!!! but I have a question, for video game design what makes you use Maya over other softwares?
thanks :) maya used to be the go to for 3d animation, althought i used it for modeling, although nowdays im using it because im familiar with it, in the ime of blender 😁
GOOD LUCK @@ibrabdo

AAOO sounds like something you type into your high score table for an arcade game because you can't think of anything to put in at the time. 10/10 perfect name.
