Hah… that’s my father at 8:25 coughing. 😆 That was clearly the early 70s. In 1984, my father decided to retire from the Air Force. He said, he’d stay on under one condition, they had to let him go back to Soesterberg. The AF approved it, and my parents decided that they wanted my sister and me to experience the NL, so we were there from 84 to 88. There was truly no place like it. I remember going to Germany with my parents to a handful of bases to visit some of their friends. The bases there were so depressing… just big American ghettoes. And they were all removed from the communities. Soesterberg was not that way. In school, we had something called, Host Nations Day, where Dutch ppl would come and teach us about the history, including WW2, the culture, etc.. We took field trips all over. Because my parents were there twice, they had several Dutch friends and I’m still in touch with some of their kids to this day. It was a very unique experience and one I’m grateful for. I think a lot of people feel that way and it’s generally considered to have been the best assignment in the Air Force. I also remember the McDonalds with the drive-thru and when they built it. Still funny to think about how much of an attraction it was. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
