Hi and welcome to my channel, my name is Martin, please join me in my white water progress mostly at Lee Valley, UK. Whilst I'm not new to paddling I am new to anything white water, so, if you can handle the many, many profanity bleeps and my poor attempt at humour, then do watch as I blindly swim towards a gold medal in wet exits.

Another session at Lee Valley WWC on the Legacy run, including some surf, ferrying, 1 swim and 2 failed rolls at the end. I am liking the higher ferries across the smaller drops, I am building up to the bigger drops :)

Another session at Lee Valley WWC on the Legacy run, including some surf, ferrying, 1 swim and a failed roll at the end. After going through this video, I can see a marked improvement in paddle placement and i seem more confident in my paddle strokes, hopefully its a sign of things to come :) Boat - Pyrahna Burn 2 Paddle - Werner Surge bent (cranked) shaft Camera - DJI Action 4 1080/60 upscaled...

I paddle the Olympic at LV fairly regularly and i *hate* that eddy with a passion. There's very few redeeming features to it other than it's one of the eddys you can get when trying to make all the eddys in a single run. It looks like your know what you did wrong, keep up the paddling! You're doing great 👍🏻
Hi and thanks for the comment, one of my main faults its not being aggressive enough especially when im unsure and this was a prime example, I think t was the 1st or second time in that eddy too but at least I know what to expect in future, btw, I've not been in it since lol. Thanks again and safe paddling :)
Kudos for recording your progression and how well you take on the criticism! Maybe its the angle of the camera but your hands seem quite close to the paddle blades. I'd move them inwards towards each other as this would give you way more power and allow your paddle to be more upright. At the moment your blade angle is too horizontal and your elbows are bent, try a more vertical stroke, straighten your arm and reach a bit further forward and drive your hips past the blade. Enjoy!
Hi, thanks for the comment and advice. This is a 197cm bent paddle and my hands are on the angled section. If I moved them closer, that would move them off the angled sections, defeating the bent paddle's purpose. I do agree with the paddle angle though, I am trying to be more mindful of that. Thanks again :)
@@SubParPaddler Must just be the wide angle of the camera. I struggled/floundered for the first few months because my hands weren't far enough from the blades and nobody pointed it out to me! Was out on the weekend and realised I'm also still lazy with lifting AND squeezing my knees on my thigh grippers. That course you are on looks ace!
I recommend taking a rolling class to make your roll bomb-proof. Knowing that you can roll up from (nearly) any situation will give you enough confidence to paddle into big waves and stoppers. I did a class last month in Augsburg. The class costs some money but it's all worth it because it makes paddling so much more enjoyable. Greetings from Germany!
Hi, nice to speak to you and thank you, yes, this is what really need, I did some pool sessions over the last winter in the hopes that i would get some help but it was few and far between. I will have to see if there is anyone local to LV that can help on the days that i go down there, i dont mind losing 30 minutes or so just rolling.
What type of paddle do you have? Im interested in getting a bent shaft paddle just not sure what to get nothing too fancy but practical!
Hi, its the Werner Surge, I wanted the Stikine but no where had it in stock at that time :( If you can try some paddles out that would be better, I think Matt at the Shop at LV may do this, or you local club or shop?
I think your doing really well but your seeming a bit hesitant you need to quit being scared and man up😂 you know you have a chance you can roll up I’ve seen you in other videos, what I’m saying is you have to start pushing yourself getting into the bigger water trying scary things like surfing bigger waves catching stronger eddy’s
Hi, and yeah, you're spot on, I really want to get stuck in a hole or carve across the green (actual drop), I just don't have the bottle, I really need a buddy to encourage etc. As for surfing a bigger wave, have you seen my surfing? Lol 😂 as soon as I hit the smooth the bow gets thrown out, I need to do that more so I can get used to the power :)
Keep practicing we all start somewhere looks like your lifting your head too fast. I found reverse screw was better for me as i used less power and more technique dame with rolling in weak side
Thanks,I think my head is the main issue most of the time, that and at times i forget to hip flick and stamp the opposite foot, too much to remember lol
@@SubParPaddlerHead but also try keep paddle on surface, push blade up and watch it mover over the surface, follow it with eyes can still get up even if head comes up, it shouldn’t but if is possible if blade stays towards surface
nice I go kayaking in the legacy
sorry if this is mean bujt the music is too loud and annoying
Sorry, its hard to judge how loud it should be, I will back it off some on future videos.
Do you think the edges on the burn catch you out?
Hi, yes, 100% they are great for carving and quick turns but I'm not quite there yet, if you're not on the ball they trip you up quite easily.
Watched a few of your videos to get a feel for the course before doing my assessment and that was me going down the feature and trying to roll multiple times 😂
Ha cool, I was hoping you'd see it, I can't believe how many times you tried and still rolled up, I am pooped at 2 tries max lol, well done :)
what grips have you got on your paddle?
Hi, I use amalgamating tape as its thicker and softer feel than eleccy tape and then i sand it back a little not much though.
Looking good mate your are improving more and more. Great video 👍
Thank you, that session felt good for the most part :)
Just missed me on my assessment in this video, will defo keep an eye out for you on the legacy course
I take it you passed, congrats :) You can't miss me, I will be the one that looks like he doesn't have a clue ;)
I envy you - you paddle quite often. You should try the Olympic course soon. I think you are ready for it 👍
Hi, I go once a week, if I could afford the fuel I would go more often. As for the Olympic, thanks for the vote of confidence but Ive not even gotten fully into a hole yet (nerves lol) and from what I can tell, that's a must for the Olympic, not only that, I can't roll consistently and that would be beneficial on there. I may very well take the advanced course (Olympic) next year, in the meantime I'm hoping to practice in the holes on the Legacy :)
What’s the black tape lookin thing on the left side of your boat?
Hi, I put that there becuase I keep catching my thumb knuckle on it.
It's what the PFD is for. Just bobbing about. Smile, it's a learning moment.
I'm grateful for the videos (I'm in one and also spotted several of my MCC paddling pals too). I'll say hello when I see you. I feel like we are on the same journey, albeit I'm a few weeks of practice behind you. Thanks for posting these, very useful.
You're very welcome, they've helped me no end watching them back, especially when I was on the Developing WW course, shows me where I've gone wrong and I can see how to fix it next time, doesn't always work mind :/ see you on the course, I am there this Saturday morning :)
You were taught right that person was not doing what they should be I think they just didn’t care to get out of the way
Thanks, I thought that was the case.
Your rolls are looking good mate. Epic video as always. 🤙🏻
Thank you, i just wish they were consistent :/
How do you mess that up😂😂😂
I think it was only yhr 2nd time in that eddy, might even been the 1st time and being new to white water i didnt realise that i needed a fair bit of power ro paddle out into the flow, a mistake only a rookie could make :)
Are you going to make a long video? Or not this weekend?
Yep, they just take longer to edit as i cant do them in a full sitting, this one will be a bit shorter too as I wasnt there as long as i normally am.
Congratulations 🎉
Thank you :)
Thats an anxiety jnducing incident. Glad to see you found your way out of it. Cheers, ignore the haters.
Cheers chap :)
This is man made white water course? I'm going to inflate my inner tube now.

Thank you :)
Nice!!
Thank you :)
Awesome dude!!!! 🎉
Thank you, just needs to be every time now, come back next year lol :)
You would had have it but your head was up!!
Story of my life is that lol :) I've not tried it since, I should have another go, I will try to remember next weekend :)
If bank staff are expected to fish you out, did you see at least two people patrolling the inside of the loop wearing PFD's and carrying throw-lines? If not, the only help you can expect is from another paddler nearby that is proficient enough to help and so-inclined, which requires luck you did not have. If the water is out of your comfort zone, you always need to have a mate around in case you need help.
Hi, I can only remember 1 at the corner, but that's not to say there wasn't one further down though, oh hold on, I have just watched my 1st run in the full video and at that time there was only 1 bank staff to cover the whole course. Perhaps it's because there weren't many paddlers on the course for that session. As you can see from my videos, no water on the Legacy is out of my comfort zone, some drops hate me of course and made me somewhat anxious (not so much now) but I am comfortable in swimming in all sections. What is not good is that there is nothing at those blocks that aid self-extraction, i.e. no step and no lips/small protrusions like there are on all of the other blocks that I have swam at. I wasn't aware that the biggest drop was like this, it came as a surprise because it made self-extraction that much harder. I am all for helping oneself but if the means are not there how are we supposed to do so as per the declaration? Not to blow my own trumpet here but not everyone will know how to chimney climb, it is only because I used to rock climb that gave me the idea to do so. When I finally figured out that I had to chimney climb and managed to get out, the bank staff was still standing on the corner, i.e. they weren't busy helping someone else, I was peed off because it meant that they didn't or couldn't see me in that eddy and also, it meant the staff/instructor that paddled past me whilst I was standing in that eddy didn't raise the alarm either. My concern was and still is, what if I was a youngun and or injured or worse, does the declaration really absolve all or does having bank staff actually place some liability on the centre? I'm just spitballing, I am not saying it does or it doesn't, it's just a thought that has been in my head since then.
When you said wanting to go in the green, what you consider “green” if called a “hole” when you see the advanced people go in the wave there in a “hole”
Hi, I am just referring to the smooth water on the drop, on a river it would be green in colour and not white (the boily stuff)
@@SubParPaddler on river or the Lee valley legacy place, that area on the “river” is called a hole but Ik what you mean, and sometimes what you call “smooth part” isn’t always smooth on a river😂😂
Ah OK, ta, I only heard it called the green, certainly on the US videos :)
Are you there every Saturday
Hi, Stuart, I am there every weekend at present and whilst I prefer a Saturday morning, the actual day is dependent. I check the bookings all week and wait till Friday evening to book it, if its not overly busy then I will do the 2x 1hr sessions on the Saturday morning, if it is busy then I will do the Sunday. This coming weekend I am busy Sunday so I have already booked the 2x 1hr slots Saturday morning.
@@SubParPaddler Might see you there this week
@@stuartreedsadventures See ya there then 😀 hopefully it doesn't rain too hard, I don't wanna get wet 🤣
Looking good mate getting better every time. 🤙🏻
Thank you, Leigh :)
Hey there, I saw you on the Legacy on Saturday morning and witnessed your little swim - you almost made it both times, hope you don't mind this observation - it looked like your hip flick was solid, but your head kept coming up first - i know its difficult in the heat of the moment but this is what let you down this time. Remember boat, body, head
Hi, nice to meet you even if i didnt see you lol, no, of course i don't mind, I need all the help i can get lol If i am 100% honest, i dont even remeber doing the hip flick, all i can remember is the sweep, not saying I didn't but as you say, in the heat of things, so i probably did, I also noticed how easy it was to come up there, i think the flow aided somewhat cause its never been that easy, it caught me off guard. Its definitely a goal of mine, that and side surf, ferry across a bigger drop and maybe surf a bigger wave than those tiny ones lol
Hi SPP, glad to have met you on the course. Look forward to paddling with you again. Barbara
Nice to meet you too, was it you that helped with my roll?
Good try
Thanks, I think this eddy has got me at least once before, found it, its like de'ja vu lol th-cam.com/video/jzpHkVXZEPI/w-d-xo.html
😂
you really said a lot of "no, no, no, no, nope" in this vid lol
Ha ha ha, I do have a bad habit of repeating myself :D
You are improving 👍
Thank you, I do feel the same, I just wish i had the guts to try a ferry across a bigger drop, stuck in a hole and learn to blooming roll lol
Been watching your lee valley vids recently as had Bearley been in a kayak since passing legacy assessment nearly a year ago and have found them great for reminding me of all the features that are there ,this was me and my mates first session back on and here you are on the same session lol i even spot myself a couple of times ,i will keep an eye out for you next time and say hello is that a burn you are in? We are also quite new to it all and still trying to perfect the roll after a few rolling practice sessions latley its coming on much better and even managed to do one on the course this sesh , you were so close to getting that roll this vid one thing i noticed with the rolls at end that may help as its definitely helped us is to follow then end of your blade with your head/eyes from set up position and all the way through the sweep out and that gets your head in a good position to pop up Cheers for the vids
Hi, Tony, I am glad you found them useful as that's one of the reasons why I decided to buy the camera, to help fellow paddlers and to show exactly what not to do and to learn from my mistakes. When I watch them back during editing (many times) they helped me to progress through the Developing WW course and pass the assessment because I could/can see where I was/am going wrong. Thanks for the tip re rolling, I think the flow actually helped when I tried it this time when on the course because it felt very easy but the 2nd reset I caught the paddle on a very shallow part (2ft deep at the most) oh and had I actually hip snapped I may have done it lol, and that's my problem, remembering to do each step and as a rule, I will forget at least 1 or 2 steps and sometimes all but the sweep. The main ones I forget are the hip snap and the opposite foot stamp. Well done with your roll and congrats for getting one on the course and yeah, gimmie a shout, I am in an old Burn (2) not B. Two and either a purple Sweets helmet or green WRSI, probably the purple one though, you really cannot miss me :D
I'm totally with you and I was holding my breath all the way through your vid! As a beginner in my late 60s I realise I'm never getting to National standards but your efforts have spurred me on. Lee Valley water looks so clean! Keep going !
Thanks, I appreciate it, I mean, ya can't be any worse than me lol I am 52 this year and I tell ya what, I certainly feel it at LV and even more so after a swim or 5 lol, The water is not only clean, its really warm from around late Spring to late Autumn, good luck with yours :)
Your surfing was so good!!
I appreciate you saying that, I have a long way to go :)
You don't wanna do it like that you want to do it like this, only meeeee
I loved that program :)
Sadly I've noticed that most of the "nastier" comments are from across the pond, such a shame but then its no different to any other social network. I have let them through but only so that I could reply, so if anyone doesn't like a comment, please, let me know and I will remove it and the person.
Crazy really. The whole point of the legacy course is that it's there for beginner and intermediate paddlers and is accessible, with the Olympic there when you feel ready for it. I thought you handled this really well mate, and have seen people handle swims on the legacy far less gracefully. Good luck on the water 👊
Thank you, very much appreciated :)
Think your rolling issue is the blade angle - you start your sweep with the angle down which causes it to just dive. The lady is right never rely on roll momentum. When upside down pause for a moment then get your sweeping blade flat on top of the water. When i was learning i would tap the surface of the water whilst upside down so you could get a feel for the water tension - but you need to be comfortable underwater for a few seconds, it looks like you panic a bit. Finally always remember your head is the last to come up from the roll The lady was very helpful getting you to Eskimo rescue (or T-rescue as it is sometimes called) as the mechanics for rolling are the same. Come the winter months join a club that has access to a pool, as you can really focus on this. Apologies if this sounds like teaching you to suck eggs.
Hi Daz, thank you for the advice, it's much appreciated, the 1st time I tried I felt the blade take the dive, I am quite certain that I don't have the flexibility any longer to be able to reach and get the blade out of the water, it's one of the reasons I am trying to do the sweep as opposed to the C to C. I am quite comfortable underwater but it was my 1st time with this lady so i suppose there could have been a small trust issue, I only swam that time because I dropped back down again but had very little breath left in me, I used to smoke and now vape so that doesn't help any and the latter is why you may hear me clearing my voice (I do edit many of those out though). I know the steps needed for the roll, I go through them quite often but my problem is, as soon as I go over I forget at least one of the steps but normally all but the sweep lol and yeah, I think all of the rolls that I have managed to do have been momentum rolls :/ Last year I joined a club with the main reason to learn the roll during the summer but no one wanted to get into the cold river, so I started going to the pool sessions I think I only managed to practice the roll for about 3 sessions. LV is really good for that as it is warmer than the pool but it's finding someone willing so I may have to wait till winter again. Thanks again :)
The more you swim, the less you will swim.
Thats what I am hoping, I need to get out fo my comfort zone :)
Amazing progress! I knew you would have a good paddle🤟
Thank you, very miuch appreciated, the paddle felt so different to previous swimming sessions, hopefully it stays that way :)
You seamed a lot more confident then normal
Thanks, I certainly felt more confident, some of those swims were silly mistakes but this time i didnt let it get to me, plus, the water was lovely lol It was also my 1st time with out a drysuit or my storm pants and cag :)
🎉!!
What camera do have and where’s it mounted? I tried going around today with a helmet mounted go pro but the footage wasn’t great.
Hi, it's the DJI Action 4 mounted to my helmet. upload even a small bit and send me the link to have a look, which GoPro is it?
Hero 10. I will admit I’m not that au fait with camera stuff but I can see from your videos how helpful they could be when trying to improve.
That should be an ok camera, when you say the footage aint great, what do you mean, the angle, or quailty or _______?
I think it’s probably because I haven’t set it up for action type filming, resolution, frame speed etc. Typical bloke, didn’t read the manual.
@@swimmerbytrade if I recall, Gopro have over heating issues, much like DJI lol, if you want to record full sessions then perhaps 1080 with 60fps (in case you want to slow any of it down), I find that's a happy medium with my camera, it will record for about 1hr 40mins, I do have to change the battery of I do 2x 1hr sessions but OK for the 90mins sessions. If you want to film in 4k then it may not last the hr before it overheats, or the battery runs out. If you will be editing oba laptop or pc (or apple) some software will upscale 1080 to 4k so you can film in 1080 and get the longest possible video and still have 4k, but depending on you editing device speed, it can take a while to encode, my last video took around 6 hrs to encode to 4k lol but then it is a very old i7 laptop. TH-cam is your best friend, anything you don't know, stick it in the search bar :)
keep at it with the roll so close to it now that it won’t be long
Thank you, I hope so :)
also if you get the roll good in rapids it makes the experience 10x more fun🚣
I really need to practice the roll a lot more than I am...
