I'm Tom, a solo TTRPG enjoyer. I love all kinds of tabletop games but rarely get to play in a group, and made my blog and TH-cam channel to play and discuss interesting games I find.

That's right, I've done a solo RPG tips video! It's something I'd been mulling over and making notes on for a couple of months now as I feel I've got some bits of advice from my years of solo RPG playing that might be half useful to someone who's maybe got started and wants to hear about how other people play solo tabletop RPGs. 00:00 - 0. Love the ruined city with the lemures that are possessed by dead spirits! :D
Yeah I can't wait to send some new recruits over there ;)
The last time I told a woman I was even a gamer she did a disappears spell on me lol 😆
You're a gamer! And got a wife, how does that even happen?
When we met I was only into videogames, and she was too. I hadn't gone fully down the rabbit hole yet ;)
It would be funny if someone else called themselves " lone rider!" Or "Lone forever" lol 😆
I'm watching the video at the moment but before I forget, that group's name is probably Sepultura. Brazilian heavy metal dudes found by two brothers!
That's it! It was on the tip of my tongue but I couldn't remember the name. I don't think I've heard their music, I was into more rock and industrial than metal back then 🙂
@@LoneHorizons ah I see, well, their music is still around if you are into :)
I think this is the first time I have seen one of these system mashups for solo play that I have actually played with or at least read all the systems used, it's great I love it. When I get some time I will definitely have a distant cousin (I'm feeling it's going to be Rip) pick up the torch and go looking for Pip.
Super cool! Thanks so much for using and showing off my little business card generator. My absolute favorite thing is watching where people take what the card spits out, and seeing the moment when the pieces came together in your mind and you *knew* what the place was is great. A shame about poor pip, but they did their best!
It's great how the randomly generated rooms seem to make sense together. I had a really fun time with it, thanks for watching 😄
I've heard of this game for a long time but never actually played it. Looks fun! Just FYI, because it's not obvious to most of us, "Treme" is pronounced "treh-MAY" (as I've heard him on a few podcasts). Hope all is well with the baby!
Argh, I made an idiot of myself in front of everyone! 😅
What I've always done for combats in Tunnel Goons games when you hit the enemy DS *exactly* is to bring about some kind of fleeting advantage, which gives +1 on the next roll if exploited really enjoyed watching you play with yourself here and doubly happy for the Grail Quest mention! It was never my top gamebook series but I loved every one I had
That's a good idea about the combat, thanks!
For every Conan there are a thousand Pips. RIP young adventurer.
This looks like a blast! Thanks for sharing-I’ll be buying your Zine
Awesome, thanks so much :)
this was a fantastic session using 2 of the coolest indie products! well done
Thanks!
Love mashing up disparate systems! I think that’s a key part of the appeal of solo play, the DIY nature of it. Thanks for making the video!
Yeah it's fun doing that for solo play. Thanks :)
Noooo not the sow!!
What a lovely video! I don't mind the long form style at all. I'm going to work toward breaking down the process into small, achievable steps as the way to go for me, at least to get started. Losing momentum or being too tired at the end of the day are fun killers for sure!
@@travisporter1405 yeah that sounds good, not trying to take on a massive open ended campaign right from the start :)
I heard “Don’t rush out and buy a bunch of games” as I listen to this while driving between different game stores. Yeah you probably have a point
Haha, classic
I like these 'slower/meandering' type videos. I actually prefer them. Great video and some great games in there along with some spot on advice! PS - Gates of Death is awful though. Puerile nonsense and not in the entertaining sense. Don't waste your time with it!
Hah, thanks for the heads up! I was wondering about actually playing it on here, but I'll read the start first and see what it's like.
My tips are: 1- Start in middle of a fight agains 1 or 2 goblins/bandits. (This way you see the fight of the game and you get an idea of the "balance" of what your character can do at the start) 2- Do point crawl instead of hex crawl. Just take a map and point some dots. Link the dots with lines and give travel time in days. (This will speed up the game, making no need to generate an entire map and you can still get lost). 3- Prepare a frame for your note taking if you will take notes. Having a framing well defined from the start makes way easier and fast to take notes and make all consistent. I generaly divide it in Session/Acts and Scenes, giving each scene an objective. (This makes everything fast, pretty and helps you to have "time" in the game as you can say "this scene took 4hrs" or for abilitys "1 use per scene"). My solo rpg recomendations: - Ironsworn (The world trues are good way to "build" an world) - Riftbreakers - Blackoath Entertainment (d100% system makes easy to understand your odds and for the start tutorial that leads you at the beggining of character creation and fight) - Scarlet Heroes (Good game with good random tables)
That's some good advice, especially about the pointcrawl instead of hexcrawl! I love Ironsworn and Scarlet Heroes. SH is my go-to solo system. Sometimes I download a free system neutral dungeon generator and try it out with Scarlet Heroes. I'll have to look into Riftbreakers as I love Blackoath's stuff. Thanks for the comment!
I think the point crawl tip is specially useful for pre made adventures, were you are probably going to follow the proposed plot instead of doing the sandbox approach. I'm planning on taking some rules from Mörk Borg that uses a point crawl system while still having some rules for travelling so you can still have some emergent side actions between the main points
@@srmarcosx Point crawl is best used when you have already a map, but you can use a blank map to. You can roll a direction and a time travel to place some point of interest, than play the normal rules. At the end of a day, for example, you can roll a d6 and on a 1 you are lost. Means you won’t move that day for example. There are some pros and some cons.
Long and rambly is fine; I just listen while doing other things! :D
Hey really liked this video, nice chill presentation. You make great points about taking your time and not biting off more materials/books than can chew. After a phase of heavy purchasing and more perusing than playing, I've begun some simplifying! Also, know a bit of the feeling with having a little one around the house, lol! Changing the attitude about free time / work time / family time takes some work indeed. Cheers
Thanks! I've found it REALLY difficult adjusting to my new life as a dad, but I'm planning to one day in a few years sit my daughter down, give her a D20 and say "Right, you're standing outside a monster's cave in the woods, with a sword. What do you do?"
@@LoneHorizons yep, it can be tough. fortunately, I've been able to GM the older one multiple times! They had great fun with it - you'll get there
This is a really valuable video, and as an aside I think a lot of this advice, including the last bit about fun being the point, is equally applicable to group RPG play.
Yeah just treating it as pure escapism rather than high art must help a lot with group play.
Great video it is always good to watch videos like this even if you have been playing for awhile. We sometimes forget some of the basics always trying new things. It is good to get back to the basics and just have fun.
Thanks! Yeah I learn a lot from watching other solo players' advice and also just their solo play videos. Sometimes you discover tips that you can use in any solo game.
Oh no buying RPGs and not playing them I feel seen😅
Loved the end, lol. Also, near the beginning you mentioned using Tabletop Simulator, and that's a fantastic resource for solo gaming. It's more a physics engine, really, so I tend to use Foundry since it has ways of automating some things and doing like individual token vision so you can know what can see what, but that's really more helpful for playing with a party. I 100% agree that doing this is for fun. It's something I personally struggle to remember sometimes when I feel like I have to stick to the rules and results of the dice. Leaving to do a mini quest for a particularly hard boss? Freaking genius. I've wiped my party before and was just like "that's just what the dice said." Would have been a better idea to just flee and learn more instead of fighting to the death.
Really glad to hear this was a helpful video! I'll look into Foundry, it sounds great. I think some automation for solo gaming is really helpful, it's probably good to find a balance between having too many dice rolls vs too much automation, since you could get to a point where you're just clicking buttons on a screen like in a computer game.
I had no idea about that Fighting Fantasy book (and I'm in the UK!). The shame. Great tips, thanks for sharing!
Yeah I wonder if any wacky Fast Show humour made it into the book? 🤣
Awesome video!! I really love the tips - I think this'll be really useful to me. I'll also be recommending this to my friends. Feel called out about all the games I do get and don't play though, haha, your tip about sticking to a few (or even one!) game at the start at least is really good :D
Yeah, in some ways being completely broke since having a baby has been good, as I've tried out a few RPGs and games from my Steam library instead of buying new ones. Glad you liked it, thanks!
Also, did you notice you're in the Solodark book too?
@@LoneHorizons I did! Was very honoured :)
I really love seeing all the little charts and stuff you develop as you go. It’s so much fun to be reminded that, even though you are recording your play through, this is really an analog game at its heart.
@@KyleMaxwell yeah me too, I play a lot of PC games so it’s really fun doing something that doesn’t need a screen.
They survived level 1! Hope you get some autumn weather soon mate. It's a sad fact that Britts seem to not believe in insulation.
Hahaaa!!! Those are some tough rams!
lol... Myrtle is a tank!
Hopefully we can keep adding bits onto him as the campaign goes on :)
Please damp down on the sound effects please. It's distracting from your presentation.
You'll be pleased to know I did exactly that starting in one of the episodes soon after this one. Thanks for subscribing! :)
Not related to the video, but I love the look of the profile picture even more now that's black and white. Fits more in with the OSR content, too!
Thanks! Yeah I'm trying to go for a more rough and ready, lo-fi style :)
So much for the b-team. I think it was a good idea not to burn luck for the rookies. Just get a new batch. The problem you describe at the start happens for me with GMing for a group, and it leads me to get burnt out. Would love to hear more thinky bits about the solo hobby in future videos.
Yeah I guess you have an ideal version of how you imagine the adventure will go but you can't predict what the players will do.
Seemed like the video went up and then back down... hope it was just a glitch! Anyway, I finished my playthrough with Swords & Wizardry! I linked to your channel / playlist a few times in my blog about it, because you were the inspiration for me to get off my ass and finally do the thing. So thanks!! 🙏🏻😊
That's awesome to hear, I'm glad I could be of help. Yeah after uploading the video I realised I'd exported a black screen for 20 mins after the end, so I deleted it hoping no one was in the middle of watching it.
You complain about failing lots of dice rolls, but I think you’re forgetting one of the core principles of the OSR: everyone is shit at everything.
@@hideshiseyes2804 yeah some people even say if you’re rolling dice you’ve already failed.
In 5E you don’t even need a feat to use Dexterity for light weapons, and you add it to the damage as well as the attack roll. Gets kinder with every edition. The kids these days don’t know they’re born!
While I was reading the first sentence I was thinking "These 5E players don't know they're born!" 😂
Hehe, the hammer for banging in iron spikes is the topic of a running joke between the designer and fans of Shadowdark. Early versions had hammer on the equipment list but everyone got annoyed at having to also get a hammer if they wanted to use iron spikes, so she deliberated about it for ages and went back and forth in subsequent versions, and eventually got rid of the hammer.
I am really looking forward to your hexcrawl game!
@@lukeenyart1073 great!
I have been *really* missing some wilderness / overland adventuring while playing through Dyson's Delve solo (on level 9 now). Thinking a lot about what to do in this regard myself.
Not sure if you catch this in the next video or if you had other plans for it in the future, but I believe you had an extra set of scalemail in one of your character's inventories that Ugmas could have used instead of buying him some! Thanks again for the wonderful content! I've been watching it all day as I've cleaned the house!
@@thisguyhandle you’re probably right, I forget things all the time. When I’m playing solo for fun I spend ages buying gear and things, but on camera there’s more pressure.
I've been binge watching these episodes over the past two days! These are so well put together! Been loving every second of it, thank you for the entertainment!
@@thisguyhandle amazing to hear, thanks! I think the quality gets a bit better as they go on - thanks for not giving up in the early episodes 😊
I've still been playing this with S&W and I'm down to level 6. Some of the enemies down there get challenging (no spoilers though).
@@KyleMaxwell I’m hoping we can get creative and not have to fight every encounter…
Those hobgoblins were definitely guilty of something.
Where’s the lantern😂😂
I hate to break it to you but in DCC hobgoblins are Lawful alignment, probably a Fascistic Orwellian set of laws, but they follow their laws😂
Oh no! That's really annoying. We'll rule that this particular group was chaotic but any future ones we encounter will be lawful.
