Mylar 'Space Blankets' and how to use them (not as a shelter)
"Mylar" (BoPET) sheets are dirt cheap and make a great shelter component, but are they any good as blankets? YES... well sort of..
PS. Mylar (a trademark of Dupont) is an eponym for BoPET

Clicked on this b/c I went to split wood and noticed my edge was horribly damaged. Started filing with #4 bastard file but sure is taking long and I found this video. I will try starting further back on the profile like you suggested. When I restore an axe, I clean off the entire axe and then wrap some masking tape around the handle near the axe head and thne tape off the edge of the axe. Spray paint it. Pull off tape let it dry. Then oil the exposed metal. Looks brand new and preserves as much as possible
There are pros and cons to everything, sorry too anyone who wanted a jack of all trades magic blanket. You are right about most like it will keep you warmer when wet than most synthetics but it is heavier than a good sleeping bag and since a good sleeping bag is in higher demand and thus higher production will cost less than a rarer thing like a good wool blanket. In Manitoba and Alberta it got too -40 sometimes and yes in that case it is silly to think it will keep you warm, even a sleeping bag unless rated to such frigid temps won't do it alone hence why a sleep system is necessary. At that temp I would get a good fur maybe a 100% wool blanket under on a pad ECT but I would like to address some specific cons. Price? Shop deals and go to second hand stores, Takes up alot of space? Roll it and attach outside the pack. It doesn't stop conductive heatloss? Get a pad so you address that problem. One pro you didn't mention is that after a while the fill in sleeping bags loses it's loft and doesn't keep you as warm where as a properly cared for wool will not. In conclusion there is no be all end all so combine things and do what works for you. For me it's 2 Wool blankets in a canvas tarp with a zpad under but I ain't out in -40...
Oh and don't wash wool or it looses lanolin and often pills up, sun wash it. Smoke wash it or dry clean it.
Please add Polish in the subtitles options.
Carinthia sleeping bags are the best for this type of environment.. The D4 or D6.. 👍
I would never loan my axe.
I agree completely! Bushcraft has become more about gear , a Multimillion Dollar industry. Seems people are more into product reviews and money vs actual Bushcraft. Ive seen videos of Dick Prenneki and Mors Kohanski using similar saws .
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s funny that people can literally not comprehend a foil blanket. Like, what does foil do for your burrito? Now be the burrito. Hahaha but thanks for helping, no joke you may have saved someone’s life.
I wish Canucks would speak in Fahrenheit. Damn your celsius.

The bulk and weight can both be mitigated if you use a kilt. That keeps the weight on your waist where it feels lightest, and gives you 2 blankets (or more) worth of material that doesn't need to fit into your bag.
Stay warm I love my wool blankets but they stay inside .but I do love them
I'd say it depends on why you want to use a wool blanket. For longevity and durability wool is hard to beat. For regular hiking and backpacking modern sleep bag systems and pads are better but are obviously less durable
Here in 2024 you still kickin bro?!?
Bro, are you alive? Did you quit making videos?
There are far thinner wool blankets like the ones given to city homeless in SF,CA... if you wrap up under a good outer shell it will keep you warmer. As for sleeping, you don't lay flat out... you sit as compact as you can on and against the best insulators you can find. When I slept outdoors homeless without any wool or warm materials I dug a hole to sit in and filled it with the warmest materials that I could find for insulation. One time all that was available was sand, so I buried myself in sand up to my neck and wrapped my head and neck as best I could. Might sound lame but I survived freezing temperatures which by the way also works to stay cooler in extreme heat!😊
Is that a Granfors? You loaned a $300 axe to a friend?
Like a bivouac tarptoo. Been there.
It's also much easier to move around. If you have a wool blanket, you wrap it around yourself and can walk easily, if you have a sleeping bag you hop around.
Put a wool blanket in your winter sleeping bag. Bring a mule. to carry your gear. Or a snowmobile.
The smart bushcrafter has 2 wool blankets
Wow ! That is a honest review about wool blankets !!! I really appreciate this !! It is exactly as I thought . Everybody loves them and says how warm they are,... They are as warm as you are ! They will not heat you! You provide the heat and they store it. But not like a sleeping bag. And the fact about the wet blanket..... keeping you warm... BS . You said it !!! Great !!! I really liked your review. It is honest !! No BS.
You mentioned psychopaths, and honestly looks a lot like your wearing cotton jeans. That will absorb and hold moisture more than anything I know of besides jumping in a river. I get what your saying, no they don’t work by themselves. But the fact is they work best as the 2nd, and 4th layer air gap. When you’re just camping I’ve found a trick I see no one else doing but it allows me to get around 200 pounds or more of gear wherever I want without packing anything on my back. It’s a Home Depot garden cart, then I can basically take whatever I feel like. Including extra wheels bolted to the back and both an auto and regular bike tire pump with charging blanket, and pack full of gear. Wool is great but nothing is perfect. Except maybe a treated US Army E.C.W.S. Sleeping bag with accompanying E.C.W.S. Clothing like your under woobie, puff coat, pants and poly propylene skin layer, but one thing I learned in the Army of you have nothing else grab wool, but never ever choose anything cotton, and always sleep Neked in below zero, except synthetic under drawers of course. Otherwise Neked, you stay warmer, and putting your inner most layers in between the gore Tex shell and sleep systems outer layers give it a chance to dry with that bit of body heat still hitting it. Anyway hook wagon to padded ruck belt and use two walking poles and bang your on your way, does it work in foot deep snow ? Of course not, but two used garage sale skies (or four if you really feel like making them and then it does work especially if you rig the skies inside with about 3 inches of wheel coming out underneath, anyway yes a lot of work but in the end you can haul a lot of gear. And you get stronger doing it. All depends on your goals. Anyway have a good one.
Alas! My unrealistic hopes have been dashed!
The large sea to summit eVent compression bag fits the four bar Hudson Bay blanket perfectly. Just FYI.
In that weather, I'm frightened that you would be found freezing wrapped up in that blanket like Jack Nickleson in the Shinning.
It doesn’t dull your file it’s been tested. Still only go one way though hahh
Ooooh cheers I was going to buy a blanket
That red one is very nice, do they have blue one like it ?
Let me preface by saying this is just my opionion, but you really stretched this video out over the 10 minute mark for maximum youtube ads. Nothing of use was said.
Here's a good short video on different ways to use a wool blanket. th-cam.com/video/CXoSpVuNXQE/w-d-xo.html
Ever heard of kilt pins? get a half dozen and pin your blanket closed, plus knitted or crochet blankets weave is more open so trap the air better kinda like how a string vest works, the blankets you have are just the top layer of a real sleep system.
Looks like he was feeling very lonely, hence decided to make a video 😄
Great video bud. I have 3 BPS knives. I love them all. They are all carbon steel which I love. I have a TH-cam channel called PA Reloader and I do camping and bushcrafting as well. Maybe you could check it out. You might find something that will help you. I just subbed!
Good video. I just can't see the advantage of a blanket over a sleeping bag that you can cram down into a waterproof sack. I also can't see them being at all easy to clean unlike a sleeping bag which can be washed (if you get the right sort).
I went hammock camping in damp conditions (rain and fog), and my wool blanket significantly outperformed a cotton blanket I had brought with me. The cotton blanket soaked up the moisture and became clammy and uncomfortable. The cheap army-style wool blanket got damp, but maintained it's insulative properties and kept me comfortable all night. Now I never go hammock camping without at least one wool blanket. Caveat: I'm a car camper, so the bulk and weight isn't as much of an issue for me.
I agree. I love wool blankets, but it's a romantic way of camping for strong young people, I can't do that anymore. In my case, I used then with hot-worm weather and sleeping beside a good fire, the whole shebang or the enjoyment was poor. But now... tent, good insolation and a powerful down sleeping bag. Now my wool blankets are at home, specially the cute Swedish Army one, for the sofa. Regards.
Brilliant input. I've had many a good experience with wool blankets, bed socks, jumpers, dressing gowns and more. I would like to add; it's somewhat fire resistant. In case you had to run through a burning room to escape. I have the UK Earle’s Witney version of the white w/ stripes. I went th red next. (:
I like the idea of attaching something bright to it
I've been on the fence about investing in a REAL, QUALITY wool blanket which means spending major $$$. Thanks for the info. I think I'll just stick with a bag.
You wanna get a vintage wool sleeping bag liner from the 80s
Get high as F that's how you sleep without moving
Burrito baby
Long story short. Wool by itself is good to around 45 50 degrees F. Add a bivy bag, tarp, and a fire let's you take it comfortably into freezing territory. Anything past freezing and you want to consider another blanket or a bag, as well as a way to get off the ground.
Furs are the only really cover that works in that kind of cold. The native Indians always had furs and skins for winter.
@throwaway3873👈give us a break.nobody wants to hear your woke bullshit on a bushcraft video.
@throwaway3873 don't be that guy nobody likes that guy
And you laid on them too! Insulation!
12 ft square water proof canvas ground cloth, queen size wool blanket, mummy bag rated o degrees. = Warm dry well rested and protected in most situations. Year round van living for the last 7 years in Pacific NW.
The problem is inadequate preparation for the task, I slept on the ground in a tent made up from 4 5x5 shelter quarters, I made end triangles , the base was a 12 pound sleeping bag on a moving pad doubled, wool blanket folded into 3 layers, depending on the weather I used one or two three candle lanterns to supply heat, or an alcohol burner with a 25mm wick for cooking, coffee, and heat. So winter hiking means pulling a sled with what you need, summer is pulling a cart.
Yahshua - you know Him as Jesus - was born to a virgin, turned water to wine, taught, healed the sick, raised the dead, casted out demons, walked on water, calmed the storm, and fed a crowd of thousands with a few fish and a few loaves of bread, among many other things. He was killed on the cross as payment for the sins of all mankind, three days later He rose from the dead. Forty days later He ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is returning very soon, but before He does, Satan, the devil, is coming to pretend to be Jesus/God (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4). Satan is an angel, and he will have certain supernatural powers with which to try to fool everyone. He will, for example, be able to make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men. He will only be on earth a short time before the real King of Kings, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, returns. When the real Jesus comes we will all be transformed into our spiritual bodies at the same moment. Jesus came in the flesh to offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life to anyone who believes and calls on His precious name! if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. - Matthew 26:6-13 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.. .. To anoint your self, the sick, or a building for spiritual protection: Get a small bottle of olive oil and pour off a small amount into a smaller vessel like a vial or baby food jar. Use the rest of the bottle for cooking. Ask the Lord to bless your vial of oil in Jesus name. Anoint yourself with the oil by placing a dab of oil on tip of finger and touch it to your forehead, and ask the Lord to bless you/heal you. To anoint your home or other building: place a dab of oil on your finger and anoint the door posts and order all negativity and evil out of the house, and order that nothing negative or evil can enter into your home including piggybacking on a person entering, order it to be so in the name of Jesus. Anoint all potential entrances to your home. To anoint the sick: place oil on tip of finger and touch it to the head of the sick and say a prayer of healing over them in Jesus name. See James Chapter 5:14-15..... ......
Best to have 2 kingsize blankets. One to lay on, while the other is on top covering head and feet, supported with some other clothing for added weight.
Great video bro, I ordered few wool blankets from military surplus shop, 15€ each
