@ why’d they discontinue? Doesn’t seem like there’s any true replacement on the market
I wish I knew. I can't see anything that replaces it either. Hanging onto mine for as long as it will last
I'm new to the channel..thank you!
Welcome! Thanks for stopping by and watching
I understand the need for high resolution but a flat response in the studio, not sure that doesn't apply in the home too but we can leave that. One thing I have wondered about as I get older with the loss high frequencies how does that affect studio engineer's when they get old?
It's something I'm constantly monitoring (pun intended). As of now I can still hear to about 17,500 Hz which is pretty good for me being 45. The extreme ends of the spectrum are the least used in music. Very few tracks hit 20Hz and not many use 20KHz as less than 50% can perceive it. But what to do when you can't hear those extreme highs? Metering is essential. It can tell me if there's high frequency energy up there and how much I need to attenuate it. All that to say, across the audible band that music is usually played within my hearing is well trained. But at those upper most 17.5KHz on up, I rely on my equipment to tell me what I need to know. Thanks for watching and thanks for the thoughtful question
Surely by the time the fan came on the power put through the speakers would be so loud hearing the fan would be next to impossible?
Perhaps. But as a studio engineer it's not like I set the level loud and just let it play. It's a lot of starting and stopping and working on different areas of the song. And when I press stop I'm afraid I'll hear the fan. That said, someone did tell me they had success replacing the stock fans with upgraded silent ones.
It was my opinion also that there's no need necessarily to double the surface area with passives. If say you have a 7-in woofer with 7 mm x-max and you have a passive that can do 15 mm x-max. Or maybe you have a 5-in woofer and you put a 6 and 1/2-in passive that has more x-max. The reason why I would prefer less passive weed eaters is less holes in the box to lose structural rigidity and the passive radiators can be more easily hidden if you can put one in the back versus one on each side where they're vulnerable
Right! Same page. Thanks for watching and for your comment
🙌 🔈 🔥
Thanks for watching Anniee!
Can you design a front ported d'appolito floorstander with these components? Would love to compare that to my Fyne F303s which are basically the same idea.
If I grab more woofers I could do that. Or do you mean just design it on paper?
@SocialClubSound Design on paper would be nice but a build with video and results would be nicer. I am a floorstanding speaker guy and I miss a reasonable priced design that works and is front ported. I do have to add that I am in Europe so sourcing some materials is a bit more difficult as in: more vendors needed.
Really good work! I like your combination of sound producer and having hifi knowledge. Then you really know how it should sound. Awesome!
Thanks a lot! Audio has been my passion for a long time and I'm lucky enough to make a career out of it. Thanks for watching!
Excellent Thank you I have subscribed ... Where can I find the cabinet drawings ?
Thanks for subscribing! The cabinet is a pre-cut knock down cabinet from Parts Express. So the only thing you'll need to cut holes for is the woofer and tweeter (and maybe terminal cup if you don't use posts). I've updated the video description with a link for a PDF showing the driver placement on the front baffle. That should help clear up any questions but if you have other questions, just reach out and ask. Thanks! thesocialclub.studio/youtube_downloads/SEAS-H1455-H1283-Driver-Placement.pdf
I'm glad that I found your channel, I started learning about designing and building speakers about 2 years ago. I have built 3 different pairs and a nice portable Bluetooth speaker. But I haven't experimented with many drivers. I have used the Dayton reference paper cone woofer which I think sounds good. I have used the Dayton reference soft dome tweeter and after listening to what you said about it I'm ready to try something different . I'm getting ready to design a 3 way with a 10" driver and I might order the seas that you just used for the mid, and maybe even that tweeter. I enjoy the challenge of designing the crossover and doing the testing. But it's great to learn from someone who has been doing it longer with more experience like you and I am looking forward to more videos!
Nice! Thanks for watching and let me know how your 3-way speaker turns out. Did you see my video where I built the SEAS King RO4Y MKIII kit? Active 3 way with DSP correction and that big old 10" sub. Thanks for your comment!
@SocialClubSound yes, that was the first video I saw. That speaker looked awesome. I have been looking at the seas that you just used because I saw it on sale. I think that I am going to use it with the 22 mm seas that you just used. I already have a Dayton designer aluminum cone 10" woofer.
Excellent! Let me know how it turns out and thanks again for watching
New to your channel.. The paper midbass type and metal tweeter pairing is essentially a classic British monitor circa early to mid 90’s.. (Edit: Spelling)
Welcome to The Social Club and thanks for watching! Gotta say I'm loving the pairing. The distortion being so low really is easy on the ears. Thanks for your comment!
I have been using that tweeter in my speakers for 12 years now, and I have replaced them both after one went strangely intermittent, although that was possibly a connection issue since nothing was wrong with the tweeters I took out, but I think they are close to the perfect dome tweeter for me. The midwoofer I have been using with them is the Tang Band W4-1720, in a small monitor speaker I call the "Neutrino"; they are extremely neutral but still extremely engaging, which is a rare pair of qualities in a speaker.
Excellent! Yeah, loving how clean these tweeters play. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
ALWAYS protect the speaker cone from screwdriver with your hand - including the rubber surround. Seeing someone with a hole pnched in their new driver is very sad.
Use epoxy, PU or normal wood glue on the seams not silicone. It's flexible which you don't want, and it also gives off fumes and vapours you don't want in with your other parts. wood glue is strnger than the wood. Those joints will not fail. use plenty and clamp properly.
Looks similar to the SB 13pfcr25-8
Pretty similar indeed, but not identical. The SEAS has a heavier basket and magnet and can take a bit more power, but the cone looks very similar! Loving how these sound! Thanks for watching & commenting
I'm in Australia, and I am looking for a superb cinema speaker to use as an LCR. I've seen DIYSG, Toids and others. Looked at JBL, QSYS and others. I preference neutrality, absolute clarity, 60Hz up, and capacity for extreme dynamic response. High sensitivity and wide dispersion. Dedicated room with baffle wall is my P.s . I use 2 small VAF i91SE speakers which use the SEAS coaxial and it is an absolute amazing little cube.
In my experience and preference, I don't believe you could have designed a better 2 way speaker in this component cost range, full stop. Great work! I am surprised a 'hard' dome tweeter doesn't reach fatiguing levels. The smaller size and crossover design helps with much of that potential I presume.
Wow! Thanks! I think the tweeter being so low distortion helps a lot with the fatigue factor. They've been great to listen on. Thank you for your comment!
Perfect amount of detail! Thanks for the great video!
Thank you! That's helpful feedback when I'm editing.
When I was first getting into hi-fi in the '70s, I asked a rather well known engineer from the country music side, how to best hear what he intended. He told me to get a pair of JBL L100 and put them within 5ft. of my face, toed-in just so. . . I have never cared about source accuracy. All it has ever needed to do is be loud enough, and audibly low distortion, meaning. . .no rubbing voice coils or farting woofers and the awful noises that wasted surrounds makes. As long as the speakers are reasonable low distortion, are balanced across the freq ranges, my imagination will smooth over the rest. This design seems like it might would be better served as part of a 3-way. It needs some displacement for the lower end. The world is overrun with four and five inch bookshelf designs. We need more 8" thru 15" three-way designs, IMO.
Fair point. I was trying to keep the budget under $500. And these do easily pair with subs. Thanks for commenting
Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos, great info.
I appreciate you watching! Thanks for watching and let me know what you might want to see in the future!
Would you consider to build this woofer in transmission line enclosure? That would be interesting….. love your vids. I am new subscriber!
Possibly! I hadn't considered it but maybe I can get creative. thanks for watching!
That's a great idea.
Love the speaker design vids.. Most people that haven't followed loudspeaker design don't know about these European brands (Seas, Scan Speak, peerless). These brands have been true state of the art for decades and used by many, many OEM's. Your hard work is much appreciated! Keep up the fight telling the audio truth!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I'm enjoying making these videos and building these speakers
Love to hear a pair for myself,I’ll send pick of my system
Great to see another video from you! Cheers sir
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
9:35 finally gets to talking about whats in the kit
Amazing work. I use atm Neumann KH150 with an Bass Array (DBA / Bass Array - 4x Scan Speak 30w4558T00 in 62L Cabinets) - and always wanted to go someday the DIY way. Because this setup is mainly for Film and Music, its always hard to find a speaker wich is detailed, punchy and just correct. Do you know sources where you can get DIY Plans like yours ? Its hard to find any Active Speaker Plans in the web, with Monitor Qualitys but also higher SPL possibilitys
Amazing build, wish i could listen to them and good work
Thank you! That really sound amazing
Does the coaxial have a different chamber to the bass unit ?
Yes it does. When I roll up the cabinets you can see me put in the divider. Thanks for watching!
It cracks me up how audiophiles spend $20,000 on speakers to listen to music that might have been mastered on speakers that cost $500.
It can definitely end up happening that way!!! Thanks for watching
This is the shit. I need this setup also. Do I still need ProTools HD interfaces or does this work as an interface. If don’t need an Avid interface, what about computer audio and using it to produce music in Ableton, in addition to a mixing rig?
I use the Antelope Orion 32+ as my interface. That allows me 32 channels in and out which pairs perfectly with the Sigma. You don't need protools HD if you're using the Orion as your interface.
@ what if you want to use ProTools ultimate and the closest zero latency possible when tracking? I still require ProTools to be the backend DAW (tape machine). Also needing to be able to produce with Ableton, Reason, & FL Studio which usually need an interface that works better as a computer audio sound card. I’m used to most high-end interfaces to not work well outside of ProTools HD which is why I’d use a BLA modded 003 along with my BLA modded Avid HD interfaces for ProTools HD. Now that I’m using an Apple M2 ultra studio, none of my interfaces work anymore and I need to find new interfaces that work well with Apple Silicon, and I can’t find any that compare to the BLA modded interfaces I used to use. I need a high-end interface comparison. Some seem to like the antelope and others seem to dog it, I’m not sure yet. I’m wanting mastering level producing and mixing interfaces.
I use the Antelope Orion 32+ and it's very low latency across all 32/64 channels. Works great with my Apple Silicon chip over thunderbolt. I know the newer Orions have HDX ports. I know Antelope took a lot of shit for their support staff misinforming people like 6 years ago and I still think they're trying to live that down. I've been using my Orion 32+ for a little over 7 years now and I wouldn't trade it for another at this point.
Building the speaker is one thing , but listening to the speakers is a whole different thing, that's why when you put a system together, don't be in a rush look at different brands and do not be afraid to mix and match !
That's why I laid them all out so I could make my selections! Thanks for watching
Hello, kann man das Gehäuse schlanker bauen wenn der Subwoofer in die Seite geht?
You need the internal volume to be the same. The box is square around so if you want to make it more narrow you'll need to conpensate by making it deeper. If you keep the internal volume the same you'll be ok
You know it has come of age when ChatGPT picks reptilian lipid infused gold foiled capacitors with oxygen free copper legs capable of resolving micro detail! 😁 Seriously though, it’s exciting and scary at the same time.
Hi.....Why the needle doesn't go to 0 when I bypass it....I see others online that the needle doesn't go to 0.....With 0 I mean totally left...Thnx
I agree with everything you said, but to defend "AI" just a little bit - you used the worst model available. Newer models are so much better ....
Fair, and I'm sure it's ever evolving. Somebody commented and said they had better luck with Gemini. Thanks for watching
Love your knowledge of building a great speaker would you be interested in building a set for me sir?? Thanks in advance for your time Johnny🍺🍺
Absolutely interested. Drop me an email let me know what you're looking to have built!
@SocialClubSound I have tried dropping my email in the comments below but for some reason it seems to keep rejecting it.

thx for your efforts
My pleasure. Thanks for your comment
We have to keep in mind that the publicly availablre A.I. just regurgitates whatever it finds most frequently... it has no sense at all of what it is doing. Just repeats the most "qualified" info.
As I've been learning the hard way. I expected it to do the work and crunch the numbers but even it's approximations were off.
chatgpt is just a more sophisticated google search.. it searches the internet and gives you what it thinks is the best answer to your question based on keywords you enter and many times it pulls in false or inaccurate info just because its the most circulated online for your inquiry.
Well....Adam Audio just brought resolve to the expense factor of passive radiator designs. Their new D3V monitors have a dual passive radiator design and they sound i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e!! Their LF drivers are only 3.5" and yet, they have the low end of a speaker twice the size and they are only $300 for the pair! That said...there are no disadvantages to speak of, with regard to passive radiator monitors(as Adam Audio have cut the cost of such a design, so beautifully.) I've been monitor-crazy for the last 17 years(since I've transitioned into PC recording) and I've owned too many different brands of monitors to mention here and I have NEVER heard anything like the D3V's(particularly at this low price point.) I could just go on & on with my high praise of these magnificent monitors and I implore every bedroom studio producer out there to check these puppies out!
I'll try and listen to a pair when I get a chance! Thanks for your comment
Nice, I dig the classical as you're cutting the MDF. Who's music is that?
Thanks! It's Josef Suk, Serenade, Op 6
Yesterday, I tried this. & Google Gemini nailed it. I gave it a crossover from parts express that I had. It suggested a woofer, mid, and tweeter. Maybe start with that and see what it spits out for you. Gemini even did an enclosure ,cut sheet list and added slot port transmission line at request. It deducted measurements from material thickness.
Excellent! Good to know Gemini is better suited for speaker design. Thanks for your comment!
I think mixing and mastering all together is wayyyy better cause you have control and if you need to change something that’s track specific you don’t have to go to an entire other project then print that, then open the mastering project AND print that 😂
Exactly! And doing both at the same time gives you all the granularity to dig into the parts while they're still all separated and easily targeted. Thanks for watching!
I dont think it was fair to switch to a dual woofer build then use that as a comparison to what AI come up with. Had you asked AI for a dual woifer design it wouldve done that...With the dual woofer anyone could expect it to sound better as most would even if AI had a killer crossover plan. I think most any x over build will entail some tweaking hear and there to please an individuals ear...Very rare one is perfect first shot...if you needed a resistor to tone down a tweeter then you chose the wrong capacitor to begin with so you either put a bandaid on it or use a different capacitor...same for an inductor. I would say design the crossover to your liking from scratch and youll likely find Ai's choice of box and speakers were nicely picked out.
Great video and a very interesting topic… what I want to know is what does the AI speaker sound like with jantzen and clarity caps simce there was still a $120 in the budget that should be possible. If the AI speaker prompt gets you 90% of the way there I would say thats all you can ask for. Another thing to consider, is that the what you put in the prompt matters a lot! It’s important that you be specific, add context, ask for variations so you can move forward with the best option, also if you don't get what you want the first time its important to refine the prompt from there vs just regenerating from the original prompt. It will also remember what you tell it to remember and it will use that information for you with future prompts. At the end of the day you will still have to make some tweaks. I would still love to hear your thoughts on the AI speaker with better parts while staying within the budget. I will like and subscribe so I can see when that video comes through. Please and thank you 🙏🏾
Thank you
You're welcome!
How about harmonic distortion profiles, breakup and resonance compensation, phase alignment, impedance and impedance phase, and better measurement practices? Sorry, flat freq response is not the only characteristic of a good speaker. However, It is very important. Power, schmower. If you are using more than a consistent 75W in listening, youll go deaf anyway. The air cores will not saturate at levels you are likely using, and the direct current resistance is actually more important than the coil's power handling. It has an affect on the woofer alignment in box, as well as less attenuation with larger gauge. For tweeters, 18-20awg is likely okay, but the DCR will affect the shape of the knee of the highpass. The higher the freq, the less power required. In fact, voltage sensitivity is more important than power handling in speaker design. My thoughts; Try some ASC X386 or X387 caps on your tweeters. Let them run for a but before passing judgement. I went back and forth between the ASC and the previous SA Clarities. Ultimately, the ASC won out, and they are relatively inexpensive. Dont use Solens on tweeters, as they have a gritty consistency. Across woofers however, I like them much better than the CrossCaps. They allow the details and textures to remain. Your dual woofer design will have better mechanical power handling in the bass. However, it will also likely have fairly high 3rd order distortion in the lower midrange, and have a breakup that is not well enough suppressed by the crossover. This is just how the Seas L15 and L18 are with a circuit as you have described. The 27TBFC is a great tweeter, and i also prefer the 27TAC/GB, however, i feel you need to better compensate for the Fs of the tweeter. Just place a 33 ohm across it and be amazed at the nasal suppression. I also think a 6.8-8.2uF may be a better value for the highpass. I also feel the chatGPT option was limited in how it could develop a valid option.
