How to Cook to Cope
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ก.ย. 2019
Hello and thank you for visiting our small but growing channel.
I’m currently finding ways to cope with chronic pain, autoimmune disease and depression through cooking. My husband is the videographer, heavy pan lifter and sometimes veggie cutter.
My goal is to get one or more videos out each weekend. I’m not a chef, I’m not an expert, I’m simply using cooking as my own personal home therapy and I’m really happy you stopped by to take a peek.
My diagnoses of Lupus, Osteoarthritis, Cervical Stenosis, Raynauds, led to getting a therapist to cope with the pain challenges and extreme isolation that comes with this group of conditions. I was diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety and Major Depressive Disorder as well. I hope to expand my videos by bringing reviews of products useful to those living with pain disorders, depression, anxiety and autoimmune disorder in addition to food!
I have days that I cannot hold a knife much less cut or cook but we are going to try to be interesting!😊

New sub omygosh I'm so glad I found you ty for your channel!!! Cooking to Cole is amazing friend❤❤
I just made bowel licorice and winter green. The flavor is very weak. I followed the directions, the oil has not expired. Any thoughts? Is 2 drams OK? I can't find anything on the lorann site.
Hi! I have absolutely used more than one dram.
Ty
Having same done Tuesday, anterior and posterior 4 levels. How are you doing today?
Thank you for asking. It looks like today is your appointment and I am wishing you well. I am much more stable in my neck area but I still deal with pain and that’s to be expected . I hope you read this in recovery, ICE, ICE, ICE! I cannot stress enough how much it helped my recovery. Best wishes. ❤🩹🙋🏻♀
@howtocooktocope7558 they kept me in hospital 3 extra days. They had to do the anterior and posterior in sepeate surgeries. Pretty stable with pain as can be, and yes using ice like crazy.
@@austinyvette3366 this is great news. I have have had both done as well but not simultaneously! Take good care of yourself ❤🩹
All my candies are accidents so I have to dispose of them.
I’m sorry to hear that. Do you think the sugar is getting over cooked?
@@howtocooktocope7558 I eat them.
Great video! I think I've got what I need now to start on my own. 🍭 🍬 thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for watching 🙏🏻
Are you cooking to cope with pain also? That's exactly how I came across hard candies and this video. I hope all is well. Edit: I just read your channel description so I understand now. I hope that you can find as many fun distractions as there are pains. I completely understand.
That’s me and thank you so much for taking time to comment. 🙋🏻♀
How do you store them, and how long will they stay fresh?
I store them in air tight containers and they stay fresh about a week. They don’t usually last that long in my house anyway. Thank you so much for your question!
Do i need to add ice to this or can i just add water instead of the ice?
Good question. I make ice out of fruit juice and add that. Another commenter add frozen fruit! Thank you for your question.
Ive been having a tough time when making candy with lemon extract. The flavor just never comes through and im not sure why.
I never have luck with extract in candy, I always use oil for a much stronger kick! I really appreciate your feedback. LorAnn has a great lemon oil! (I am not paid by them 😆)
Hard candies is a way better alternative than hard smoking. I have long been addicted to cigarettes. And soon I’ll be taking up skateboarding. And thus, to avoid huffing and puffing in between tricks, hard as it may be, I might have to quit smoking altogether. I was told smoking impedes athletic performance. I’m hoping your candies can help me.
I wish you luck on your journey. I quit smoking in 2014 and it was not at all an easy thing to do. Your plan sounds awesome though!
@@howtocooktocope7558 Thank you very much! So it’s a choice for me between smoking and skating. At first I considered vaping but my friends tell me that vaping is just as bad and eating candies is an even better cessation alternative. Plus, it gives a dose of extra carbohydrates for an energy boost. ( in skateboarding for me) I’m pretty sure you tried it too! Am I right? Anyhow, congratulations on your awesome patience and determination to quit smoking! Job well done ! Thanks for sharing the candies.
Funny. I was just looking at those oils online
Quality oils for sure! Great company with the best employees. I did not get paid to say that 😆
Hi madam hope you fast recovery how is your health right now itis good am suffering the same neck stenosis. How long for such surgery to heal and return to work and normal life and the cost of surgery please
I am so sorry I missed your message! I hope you are doing well?
no citric acid? doesn't it taste all boring?
Well I suppose it depends on your definition of boring. Citric acid makes the candy sour, I am not a fan of sour candy but my husband loves it. If you want sour candy you can easily toss these in citric acid and sugar afterwards!
Thank you for sharing ❤
Do you need to oil your silicone mold?
Many people suggest it however, I never use spray or oil and my candies come out perfect. As long as you let it cool completely they should pop right out.
what is the best type of food coloring
Hi, thank you for your comment. I used regular food coloring that is used for baking however, I know there are safer dyes on the market now. I would check out LorAnn Oils online (they do not pay me, I just like the company and products)and see their options. It’s candy making season here so I will be doing the same! 🙋🏻♀
Hello Was wondering if it is possible to let my candy cool in room temperature or should be put in the freezer
Hi and thank you so much for watching. I always cool my candy at room temperature. I typically don’t make it in the summer months as the humidity makes it tricky to keep from being tacky. Keep it in a cool dry area for best results. 🙋🏻♀
@@howtocooktocope7558 for how long should I keep the candy in a cool dry area for heat results
As long as you keep it away from humidity and moisture, your candy should last months.@@oleshi2691
I must try these! How long does it last in the freezer? I’m wondering if I could freeze them in individual ice pop sleeves.
It will freeze into ice of course so I just cut it up with a butter knife and throw it back into my blender to slush it up. Ice pop sleeves…even better! 😆🎉 Ordering them myself!
That's a lot of freaking candy on that table there...GODDAMN!
😆😆😆
I wanted a buttermint flavor so i used 1 dram btl of butterscotch and 1/2 peppermint and yuk! lol it was to minty. Oh well, i made 2nd batch, threw the first in and added another butterscotch dram btl. I'll leave the flavoring experiments to Lorann.
I just tried this LorAnn recipe and it came out brown and burnt even after pulling at 300
I’m so sorry your candy burned. Perhaps your stove runs a little warmer and you may want to try turning the heat down a bit. You also want to make sure your thermometer is working properly as I had one that was off and kept ruining my candy batches. Please let me know how your next batch turns out. 🙏🏻
They aren't hardening it's been three hours -.-
I’m sorry you are having this issue. Are you using a candy thermometer? Typically that would be a result of not cooking long enough
okay.... sooo wish I had watched this before i made my first batch of candy, which was just about 15 minutes ago....but now I know the tips and tricks...thank you
I’m so sorry! Thank you for watching and for your comment. Please let me know if you tried again and how it turned out?
Great video. I make hard candy in the chemistry lab with students and they also learn how to carry out esterification, making the oils... 🙂
Thank you so much! I’m fascinated to learn about oil making that sounds amazing. 😲🥳
Thanks for the video. I was specifically looking for a video about gummy bear silicone molds and hard candy 🍬 😋.
Thank you so much for your comment. I hope it turned out great! 🥳💗
Is the ratios the same for truffles and creams?
I’m so sorry I missed your comment! I am sure you found the answer to your question by now. 😓🙋🏻♀️
Very nice video. You and your husband did an excellent job.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a nice comment. 💗
Thanks for this wonderful video! I ordered an oz of LorAnn’s cherry oil. How do you measure a dram? Have you ever tried using a sugar free sweetener such as erythritol or xylitol for those with sugar restrictions? I would love to have a recipe for that! 🙏
1/16 of an ounce is how it is defined. 🧐 As for using substitute sweeteners, I have not yet ventured however, my lifestyle should incorporate some alternatives! Thank you for your comment. 💗
Coating a wood toothpick with cinnamon oil and/or various quality mint oils can be a wonderful experience to your taste buds with practically no. sugars. 🙏🌹❤️
I used to love cinnamon toothpicks! It’s a heck of a lot healthier than Candy! 😆🙌💗 Thank you for taking the time to comment.
I am scheduled for this surgery April 5, 2022. I am so scared!
I’m wishing you a speedy recovery. Please feel free to reach out to me on Facebook if you have any questions or just need support! ❤️🩹
I am schedule for c3-7 posterior lam&fus in one week. I’m really freaked out about it.
@@ratterrierdogma I understand your worry I absolutely felt the same, it was a big surgery for sure. Prepare your home for your comfort and remember ICE is your absolute best friend. I healed so fast because of ice! My very best to you for a speedy recovery. ❤️🩹
@@howtocooktocope7558 thank you!!!
Hey there, wondering how you are feeling? How was your surgery.
Walmart sold cinnamon peppermint together like starlight mints but very strong during the holidays years ago but I can no longer find them. Any idea how to make my own the ones that are sold aren’t strong enough. Thanks
Thank you for your comment, I just looked those up because they sound amazing but I have never heard of that blend! I do not know how but I am now curious! I found the ones you were referring to online… www.walmart.com/ip/Peppermint-Starlight-Mints-1-pound-Peppermint-Star-Light-Starlite-Hard-Candy/102661513?athcpid=102661513&athpgid=AthenaItempage&athcgid=null&athznid=si&athieid=v0&athstid=CS004&athguid=imzSoO3pPqAFaeWPXBRTsio0lBRW1wkBGCw9&athancid=null&athena=true
Thanks for your reply but they aren’t the same. These were the right amount of peppermint and cinnamon I even contacted Walmart with no response from them. I have tried many different candies and none were the same. Thanks for trying to help..
I sent the above comment earlier this year and found out that Brach’s was the one that made the candy that Walmart sold and stopped making it in 2011. Im going to experiment with these flavors.
U should start making videos again. Really enjoy your simple recipes!
That’s the nicest comment ever. I promise, more coming soon. Thank you for the comment and your support. 💕
Why is my flavor only on the outside of my candy?
Oh no! Do you mind me asking what flavoring you used for your candy? I give my candy a really good stir before pouring as well to make sure it’s thoroughly incorporated. Please let me know!
@@howtocooktocope7558 I used cinnamon, but this is the first time I made it and I don't think I stirred it enough. I was kind of nervous because I kept hearing how potent the steam would be, so I made a quick stir and poured real quick lol!
@@rhondafurrow2712 Cinnamon oil mist can burn for sure! I always put my extractor fan on with cinnamon. I would bet that’s what happened. I really hope you give it another try. I want to celebrate your success!
@@howtocooktocope7558 I am going to try watermelon flavor either tonight or tomorrow, I will be sure to stir more this time lol! Thanks for your feedback and I will let you know how it goes.
@How to Cook to Cope Ok, so I tried the watermelon and it came out pretty good except the flavor wasn't there. I mean, there was a hint of watermelon flavor but not very strong at all, It was throughout the candy not just on the outside like the cinnamon was so I stirred it up correctly this time! Do you find that some of the flavors are weaker than others?
I found your channel looking for recipes to use Lorann emulsions (why is it hard to find these?) but I just wanted to say - I hope your recovery has gone well. Thank you for taking the time to create your videos and channel. Love from Whidbey Island, Washington State. :)
Thank you so much for such a sweet comment. I find LorAnn emulsions on Amazon as well as their website. If you deal with them direct I can promise you will be delighted with the customer service . My hope is to put out some more videos soon. Thank you for watching and thank you for your well wishes!
I’m so sorry, did you mean recipes for their emulsions are hard to find? See how easy it is to misunderstand text? 🤭🤭
What is the thermometer reading (F) for hard crack stage? You just say hard crack stage.
I can’t believe I missed that important information! My apologies. Hard crack is between 300 and 310 Fahrenheit, I never go beyond 305 or my candy starts to have a bit of a burnt flavor.
Great Job*****Your right to the point of making the candy. Thank You******
You are so welcome, thank you for watching!
Have you ever made the hard candies with just honey? For dietary restrictions I can’t have cane sugar or the corn syrup.
I have made cough drops with honey and the consistency is not the same however, I intend on posting some healthier alternatives in the coming year so stay tuned, I will see what I can do! Thank you so much for your comment.
Piping bag would have been better than spooning chocolate into the moulds
Isn’t that the truth! I have added that to my kitchen since. 😃
Should the thermometer touch the bottom of the pot or be in the center of the melted sugar?
Hi Lou. Thank you for watching. Just above the bottom of the pan is fine but not actually touching the bottom. Good luck with your candy!
I know one person has already said two drams and everyone loved it, but what do you think would that be too much?
I have used 2 drams if I felt the flavor wasn’t strong enough for this size batch, so far that has only been one flavor. I use LorAnn Oils for that reason, their flavors are pretty potent. It wouldn’t hurt if you did though. 😊 I would only caution you if you are using hot cinnamon oil, that might hurt! 😱
Have you got any advice on stopping it being too sticky when putting in packets? I made a small batch of lollies today and even after dusting them with icing sugar they still seems to make a mess. They’re for my friends wedding favours 😅
Hi Helen! I experience this situation in high humidity, If I make hard candy/boiled sweets/lollies in summer I crank my air conditioning up because humidity is sugars nemesis. In the U.S. some lightly dust their candy in corn starch. Another reason for sticky candy is if it isn’t cooked long enough. I’m not sure where you are located however, if it’s humid I can just about bet that is your culprit. I have read that you can cook your candy for an additional 2 degrees higher to make up for the humidity outside. I have not tried this myself so I cannot vouch for it personally but wish you luck if you give it another whirl. 💕
@@howtocooktocope7558 thank you for this! I’m in the UK, the weather isn’t the best at the moment but can get quite humid at home through the day, I didn’t actually think of that! I’ll give another batch a whirl today and cook it a little longer too. Pray this works 👏
@@helenplace8190 Good luck! 💕🙏🏻
@@howtocooktocope7558 cornstarch will work, you can also sand them in sugar, if you want a sour patch type taste sand them in a mixture of citric acid and sugar
@@johnnyace1300 Thank you, good to know!
Looks flavourful and yummy!
Hey Angie ..I didn't know u had TH-cam channel, anyway I subbed..I hope your channel grows..
Hi honey! I’m on FB again too. We haven’t done a video in a minute but hang in there, working on it. 💕
i followed this recipe meticulously, and my candy has a touch of a bitterness to it. 2 batches have had this that i have tried. is this normal? is it from the syrup?
Bitterness can occur when your sugar burns. I keep my stove on medium low but everyone’s stove is different of course. I also make my candy in a heavy bottom pan because the heat disperses more evenly. I’m sorry your candy didn’t turn out this time. Please let me know if you try again.

How long can you store the candy for?? Love making treats but I don't have a big sweet tooth so eat them slowly.
As long as you keep it in an air tight container away from moisture you can store it for months! Moisture will be your candy’s nemesis! Thank you for watching! 😊
