Thank you ☺️🧡🌿 Haha yes, I'm 4+ years in at the point of posting this video but in the video it was 2022, so within my first 2 years loc'd. My retwist maintenance frequency is 5 times a year. I have only ever retwisted as my maintenance method and it's 100% the one for me... so I'm unable to provide any lived experience of retying (it's not my place to speak on it) but if you research for your individual context and decide, I always advocate for doing what's right for you. And especially when switching between methods. If you can seek out experiences of others who have changed methods during the course of a set of locs, that will help to inform your final decision too. 🌿 Let me know what you decide.

Loc'ing happens via the budding, matrix formation and maturation process over a period of time, not the maintenance method. This is why free-formers still achieve locs because their locs form freely without interference. Maintenance such as the retwisting method that I use, is more for determining HOW you'd like your locs to look when they form, so in specific sections across the head. To me, unravelling means there is movement in my hair and movement means growth and formation of the locs matrix (an internal process that is not immediately seen). Over time that formation matures, and maturation gives the visible appearance (externally) of the locs we desire. I explain this in the video I shared the link to and across my content but basically, unravelling and frizz are your best friends if you want natural, full, healthy locs 😃😃 Now imagine if your roots didn't unravel, or the maintenance held, the questions would then be "why is my hair not growing? why are my locs not forming?" Something's gotta give and personally I chose to embrace the movement for peace now and long term gain 😅 If the hair moves, I'd say that "happy hair" I hope that's helpful.

I hear you. This is one of the reasons why I started talking about this in terms of locs as there seems to be this expectation/assumption that maintenance will "last" 😅🌿 I chose to be free from that kind of pressure a long time go.

Besides shampoo for cleansing on wash days, I only use water and oils for maintenance. No gels, no conditioners, no leave-ins 💦🌿🌳😄

Hey, thanks for engaging with my content. I don't detangle my hair, as tangled hair supports the loc'ing process and helps to form a solid loc matrix . I simply choose to separate one loc from another as part of my process for maintenance, and I take my time with my hair strands. 🌿🌿🧡

Thank you for referencing the timestamp. Hopefully I can be clearer for you... Personally, I choose what I capture (record) for possible content and what I leave out (from recording or final video edits) because caring for my hair and my wellbeing always take first priority over any content I create and share. So sometimes, not recording is the best decision for me or not including that section in the video if I happen to capture some of it whilst working on a group of locs. That way I don't add any additional stress to myself, and especially in real-time during the separating process by way of being conscious of capturing every minutiae detail 🌿 Have you watched Part 1 or any of my other videos where I share/talk about my locs? I have quite a chunk of content already out there between here (TH-cam) and Instagram and TikTok. Plus you might find some snippets of me separating my locs before retwisting, ie. th-cam.com/video/85Y98R2v-u4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=OliviaDHinds I'm sure I've previously shared some content where I can be seen doing some separating of my locs but you'll need to scroll through, as it might not be a staple in every video I post about my maintenance process. Or it might not be the level of separating you want to see, such as the moments that I choose to keep more personal for me. Washing my hair for example is something I decided not to capture and share online but others share that stage of their process where people can enjoy that content 😄 However, what I would suggest here is that you take your time with you and yours... and tease the hair strands apart as gently as you can and always lubricate the strands first to minimise or mitigate breaking/over-snapping. What I do with my hair might not be right for others, and I'm careful not to overshare everything I do/use because some people compare and copy without having the proper understanding of their individual context. My strands may take more pulling than someone else's, so if they pull the way they see me do it, it could cause more damage. Maybe this is an idea for a video for me to talk about... because I know I'm heavy handed and my hair strands are strong 🤣🤣 haha... but it's like a dance, as I know what level of force or manoeuvre is right for me. The foundation of my maintenance sessions is peace, so I make sure I'm not rushing to do other things. I'm very conscious about my internal and external environments on Wash and Retwist days because I'm intentional about being present. Frustration is a no for me when it comes to my self care. I hope that's helpful.
