How To: Easy 10 Minute Sundolphin Kayak HDPE crack and hole repair
10 minute HDPE (high density polyethylene) welding repair of a crack in a thermoformed Sun Dolphin kayak. Full blog article at paddleandpole.com
In this video, Dr. Pete from PaddleAndPole.com demonstrates how to easily repair a crack in a thermoformed Sundolphin kayak using only two simple tools (a screw driver and propane torch) that most average homeowners might have on hand. He also uses common household sources of high density polyethylene to complete the repair in less than 10 minutes.
This video is the first in a series of videos being released by the team at Paddle And Pole covering the different repair techniques and approaches for repairing cracks and holes in the hulls of canoes and kayaks made from HDPE.
Cheap, quick and easy kayak hole repair in 3 steps:
1) Sand surface with 80 grit paper to remove oxidation
2) Clean area with alcohol or acetone to remove any oil
3) Using propane torch to heat screwdriver, slowly weld filler HPDE to base material to repair crack.

The screw driver method has to be one of the best and cleanest ways to repair polyethylene that I have seen on you tube yet. Really liked the base material only perpendicular technique. Hats off to you bro Thanks and good job. There are alot of messy hack jobs out there. Torch and screw driver and a drywall mud bucket.👍👍

I have a kit with a electric iron.. but... it gets to hot .. and will go right thru the kayak.. I like the screw drive with the torch.. as it cools.. much better control... thanks man.. I'm trying this today.. yup yup.!!

If you buy a plastic welding kit you will read where it says only melt the filler material not the repair. Well throw those instructions away. I've been welding plastic for 40 + years and with few exceptions the filler won't bond if you don't get the repair material gooey too.

I'm sure the torch is farther away from the yak than it appears but at first I was waiting for it to start sagging then burn a big hole in it.

I picked up a cheap precision minnow kayak, but unfortunately it is cracked around the top rim. But it’s the best kayak I’ve ever paddled in. I love it. I’m hoping that this technique will work. Thanks

If you find the plastic feeling frail as you begin repairing it buy some stainless steel window screen. Go to the inside if you can reach the area. If not do it outside on the damage. Use a soldering iron if possible. The wider the tip the better. Smoothe the damage with sandpaper. Clean it up and lay the screen over the damage. Use the heated tool to press the screen down into the plastic far enough so you can cover it with filler. After filling in use finer grit to smoothe the area so it doesn't have jagged or uneven edges for rocks and debris to catch and damage again. Make sure you cannot see any metal from the screen when you're done. Harbor freight has some cheap plastic welding kits that come with some filler sticks. I suggest you go online or hobby shops I use ww Grainger and buy the multi packs of filler rods. Nylon,PVC,PP,PE,ABS etc. They all are different colors. You need to use the same material for filler as the repair material.

My Pelican Castaway kayak has 4 scupper holes that have maybe a 7/16 opening that allows water to come in. I am making a lot of mods during the summer and now that fall is moving in I was wondering if this method or something similar would allow me to seal those wholes so no water can get inside the kayak. My mods I have done this summer allow me to mount some electronics in my kayak but I am still just laying my phone down on the floor of the kayak and it has been getting soaked from the water coming inside.

You are still only melting the plastic to the surface you were supposed to heat up the kayaks plastic with the torch and it's supposed to still be molten and movable whenever you overlap with the new filler plastic you're also not supposed to clean this kind of plastic or any plastic with acetone it brings out the oils makes the surface weak and causes small microscopic cracks that you can't see if you don't believe me watch tons of videos on this matter from the professionals doing it. That's all they talk about in the precautions is use alcohol and not acetone if both plastics aren't molten whenever you are putting the new filler plastic on then you are still just putting the plastic on the surface. This might work for a small crack if it doesn't get hit in that spot and the surface plastic that you just put in crack off again but this would definitely not work for a big hole
