I fully understand your point. I was born in Hungary and grew up in Germany from the age of 6 until I graduated from high school at the age of 19. When I moved back to Hungary I have left a lot of things out. Like you mentioned, celebrities etc. It is not just about race, Asian or not also the cultures even in Europe itself are so different... It took me a few years to fully integrate

I'm glad you've outgorwn a lot of your insecurities. It is a life-long struggle sometimes, but you're obviously doing it right. Focus on what we can control, and let go of what we can't. 頑張って!

As a Hispanic living in the US I have dealt with the same insecurities, I’ve been living here since I was 5 but still didn’t have the same knowledge or cultural experiences as a typical American. All the classics such as "Charlie Brown", "Christmas Story", “The sandlot” were met by cheers by everyone except for me. I didn’t know what Shirley temples were or that green apples were called Granny Smiths which made me feel stupid as you also experienced . That in itself I find interesting since here in the US we tend to think Asians are extremely intelligent. Physical appearance has also been an insecurity, being shorter than average and having darker skin was something that bothered me for the longest. I mostly gotten over it but I would be lying if I said it didn’t affect me once in a while. The one insecurity I can’t shake is my accent. No matter how much I focus on my pronunciation I can’t speak without an accent in both English and Spanish which again makes me think that people think I’m stupid. Also want to let you know that this podcast is among the best Japanese podcast around. The topics are interesting and engaging while still being learner friendly. The addition of the mic is also great as there was a lot of unstable noise with the ones that were held. Keep up the great work!

Hello Saya. This year i tried learning Spanish and Japanese. How do you learn spanish from Japanese since you are living in Spain now? Learning Japanese was hard for me once i reach Katakana. Hirigana was still manageable for me. Spanish was easier for me since it's in alphabets and i was studying French previously..

I heard japanese people blamed the goverment because of lack of english education but japanese people don't stop using foreign words in a japanese mode foraido poteto

These were all great suggestions! As a middle aged guy, this has become a point of concern for my future. While now I am satisfied devoting my time to my family and personal interests, I wonder how I’ll be able to create social connections after my kids grow up and move on. I specifically like the suggestion of learning something at a class. I have actually done this and joined a swimming class for over a year and found multiple benefits. Having scheduled exercise is great for maintaining both physical and mental health. Also it creates the opportunity for social interaction in a fixed “bubble”. You can have social interactions without concern of your personal time being interrupted unexpectedly, outside the “bubble”. There is also the value of working together towards a common goal with people of a common age. It’s also fun to work on something that is different than your day to day job. I must say, however while all these methods are great suggestions to make friends initially- I think there is a further goal of making a deep (親友) type relationship which may still be out of reach or difficult to achieve. While this difficulty may not be limited to relationships with foreign people, I still think it may be relatively challenging to achieve with someone with a different culture and language. There will always be something that will interrupt the flow of a conversation, such as an unknown word or cultural reference that is not shared. I think this is unavoidable. When I was in my school years, I had a friend that I’d talk on the phone with, and walk and talk with for hours. I hope, especially for foreigners that live permanently in Japan, (like myself) that they are able to have at least one such person like that in their lives. Whether it be a spouse or best friend. I hope they are able to create such a relationship with a Japanese person. A relationship that is truly deep and long lasting. Thank you Saya-san for raising this important topic and providing your suggestions.

I'm learning Japanese in a pretty unconventional way. No translation, no subtitles, just trying to listen and watch with zero knowledge of Japanese. Would it be possible for you to incorporate more miming/acting out what you're saying, while still keeping the speech normal and natural? It would also be nice to be able to not see the Japanese subtitles (I'm not using them). Not trying to be demanding, I'm just saying what would help me out. Love the videos and thank you for making them!

違うくて、なんて言ったら笑われる。

Making friends in Japan is extremely hard. Some of my fellow expats have never had a Japanese friend I have not had much luck myself. My two friends were my age, and spoke great English and we had similar interests. They moved away over ten years ago and I haven’t made a Japanese friend since. I’ve had girlfriends but just two friends in 30 years here. Essentially Japanese can’t deal with foreigners unless those foreigners are absolutely bilingual and bicultural OR the Japanese themselves are bilingual and bicultural. The mindset here is essentially “Japan vs. The rest of the world (gaikoku)” I’m not saying it’s impossible BUT it’s basically rare.

Saya sensei, thank you so much for your videos! I'm so glad I found your channel ❤ There is definitely a deficit of content for more advanced learners who want to hear natural speech but still need subtitles. One tip: I think the videos where you can turn off English subtitle are better, because when there are subtitles in English we automatically look at them and don't really try to understand what we hear. I'm looking forward to more podcasts 😊
