Frenchman's Creek

Frenchman's Creek is romance at its best. With all the mastery of atmosphere she used so triumphantly in Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier spirits the reader away to the days of the Restoration. This film is an extract from 'The Make Believe World of Daphne du Maurier' and is a rare opportunity to see Dame Daphne at her home in Cornwall. She talks to Cliff Michelmore on a wide range of subjects about ...
Jamaica Inn

When Mary Yellan, a farmer's daughter from Helford, obeyed her mother's dying wish and went to live with her aunt near Bodmin, she had no idea that her attractive, laughing relative was married to the landlord of Jamaica Inn, miles from anywhere on Bodmin Moor. As the coachman warned her: 'Respectable folk don't go to Jamaica any more'. This film is an extract from 'The Make believe World of Da...
The Loving Spirit

Daphne du Mauriers first novel was The Loving Spirit. She wrote it in 1929, at Ferryside, the du Maurier familys holiday home at Bodinnick in Cornwall. She was inspired to write the book after discovering the wreck of a schooner called the Jane Slade in Pont Creek and then reading the letters and boatyard records of the Slade family, who were shipbuilders in the nearby village of Polruan. This ...

Wonderful woman and Great writer - how well she used her talent - "The Loving Spirit" is a book without parallel❤❤
I love Daphne’s writing, she’s one of my favourite authors 🙂
Wonderful lady xx ❤
❤❤
This interview is the only one with her on TH-cam!?!
I'm fascinated by Daphne du Maurier xxx
Notice that so many novelists are married & supported. Not, of course, those sad ones like Woolf & Plath. Nice to be supported while you make art.
She was supporting her whole family including the husband.
Such a bitter take.
As a youngster living in the area with a small propelled dinghy l visited the creek many times and believe me you get that feeling of calmness and never want to leave....I want that cottage on the southside of creek...a little gem!
I bought the book when it came out and then the reprint with more photo's and a different foreword I think. I still have it somewhere. Cornwall like all places has gone through changes over the years and not always for the better. I first visited in the 1970's and it must have been ver different from earlier that century but I can say this, it had a feeling of isolation and in some ways neglect then. It was a grand feeling that is harder to find today. I first stood in Chun Castle in September 1976. The fog came down and I had some difficulty finding my car. I was there in 1978 on a summers day and again in 1993. I visited last September, the first time since then. The stage thing is standing there links me back over the years and it's as if time has stood still. I'm grateful to Cornwall for that as nowhere else can do that for me. I made a pledge to go back in 2025.
I've stayed at Jamaica Inn, had a great time there! Dosmary Pool is opposite the inn, the legendary lake of Excalibur.
Hello! Is there a way to buy this documentary? Thank you very much.
This is amazing! To see video footage of her and hear her talking, it makes me so happy!
Oh PLEASE upload the rest!
I love her voice.
♥
This woman is my idol! She is the person who inspired me to write alongside Jane Austen. They both inspired me to to write dark romance stories. One of them is set in Cornwall. I want to see the real Frenchman's Creek. I finished it a short time ago, I want to see the real Frenchman's Creek, I want to see Menabilly too
It's not on Netflix (yet).
seethevolcane What about dailymotion, the BBC? Netflix isn't all there is.
Fascinating woman...DdM...
I was in love( and still do) with Daphne du Maurier - going back to my schooldays in the 50's. Its fascinating hearing her voice in this clip. I love her books esp this one, Frenchman's Creek and Rebecca - just can't put them down when I start. Adventure and Romance, and the films are just as well produced....thanks !!
One of my favorite authors ever. She is a rare treasure.
What a wonderful find! My favourite writer living at Menabilly near Fowey! We are lucky enough to visit this beautiful house as my son is friends with Lord Rashleigh's son. I was taken on a tour of Menabilly only a few months ago. Not an awful lot has changed from when Daphne du Maurier lived there. It's nice to see some footage of her!
This is wonderful......a peek into the private world of a truly great writer.
Many thanks for this rarity, it's a great gift ! ^_^
@kookyrhi I think Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte are very good too! Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice are my favourite... But yes, Jamaica Inn is very nice too =) I read also "Rebecca" but Jamaica Inn is better...
We run Expeditions to Frenchman's Creek to take in the beauty of the Helford River in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest. A beautiful video, set in a beautiful place.
Loved the book. I visited Jamaica Inn during the 1970's, and again in the 1980's. So heartbreakingly commercial. (There was a parrot in a cage, so neurotic that it had plucked itself bare. That image stays with me...)
Ditto!
How sad that there are not more comments. Indeed a great novel and film, although my personal favourite is, "My Cousin Rachel."
Ditto.
Thank you for posting this . A beautiful reading!
