Streets of London - John & Phil

I came across an audio recording of Ralph McTell's song, that Phil and I had done about 20 years ago. Not in a studio, just done in our front room I think. One of the verses seems to have got missed out, for some reason. However, I found some pics to go with it and upgraded it to a video using my 15 year old laptop which has a very basic moviemaker program that I'm familiar with. Hope you like it. -John

The retro radio is one of the many curios scattered around the Born in a Barn recording studio, near Coventry. We thought we'd honour it with a song. John did the lead vocals and Phil provided the instrumentation. The radio made no sounds at all, as it is in fact a biscuit tin.

My father taught me to play this on the banjo. It was one of his favourites, he piped up with it on his last hospital admission back in 1999, much to the amusement of the nurses.

Empty Saddles in the Old Corral

Like ghost ships on moonlit seas, empty saddles depart the old corral at sunset, only the distant clip-clopping of hooves accompanying them on their mysterious journey. Phil's voice echoes eerily back from the canyons as he calls on his trusty companion, a vintage Korg keyboard, to provide a suitable accompaniment. This home recording dates from 1990, when I was 43 and my son Phil was 15. Guitar was my Daion Legacy 999, in need of some new strings. The 'accordion' sound was a Busilacchio electric fan organ, which I had picked up in a junk shop and Phil learnt to play, though the buttons only worked on and off. Pics added September 2023.
