Uncle Mud (aka Chris McClellan) raises free-range, organic children in suburban Ohio. He has been using natural building as his soapbox to preach self-reliance and community empowerment, since 2004. Building houses, pizza ovens, and woodstoves with mud and junk is his way of sharing the Can-Do spirit. He writes, teaches workshops and hosts a mud pit and DIY building demonstrations at Fairs across the US.
Uncle Mud's Hot Cob Mullet: The Ultimate Tiny House Rocket Mass Heater Upgrade. Part 2
Tiny Houses are a special challenge for heating with wood. Generally they aren't very well insulated and a heater big enough to keep you warm through the night will overheat you in no time. There are special challenges with a Rocket Mass Heater. Many Tiny Houses have wood floors and wood walls so its a bit tight fitting a mass heat storage that is big enough but doesn't collapse the floor or catch the walls on fire.
The Red Cabin at Wheaton Labs has been our test bed for Tinyhouse Rocket Mass Heaters for about ten years now. I think we are up to about a dozen different designs now. This one works pretty well, but we are still tweaking it.
The mass bench made from pebbles and cob and dense rock does a great job of storing heat while keeping it away from the walls but we have also discovered that if the room warms up too soon people stop feeding the fire, the mass never gets fully warmed up, and the room is cold by 2am.
So last year we built a sand battery around the burn chamber to slow down the heat. That helped a bit. Over in the Love Shack we found that adding rocks to the top of the radiant barrel--where its the most uselessly hot--does a lot for keeping the heat from just convecting up to the ceiling, but it works best if the barrel top mass is all one piece. The heat lasts longer.
To continue that experiment I am installing a cob surround on the top and back . I call it "The Mullet". Paul hates the name and wants to call it "The Cape and Hat". So I call it "The Mullet."

It's a stark landscape but beautiful and far from empty. Today we are visiting the local building supply store to get sand and clay for Ray's cob house. Some people come here for the prices (free) but I come for the selection. I love th...

How big is the barrel?
about 35 gallons (18" diameter, 28" height). Thank you for watching.
Looked everywhere on the map and cant find Missourahhhh anywhere.... Oh, You must be saying Missouri ..... Dont let idiots advertise your business.
Its been Missourah in my family ever since my great great grandfather settled there. I'm the idiot pronouncing it wrong and I am having so much fun being me exactly like I am that you can be right all day and I will just continue doing what I do. Thank you for watching.
Did you build that large kiln if so how im looking to make one and having a hard time figuring it out.
The kiln bit is an old electric commercial kiln. They are often cheap or free because the electric elements burn out and can be expensive to replace.
Currently doing a skoolie build considering something like this. Seen that beer kegs are stainless and was thinking of doing one of those maybe even a mini keg because it's a bus feel like I don't need full size barrel. I also am debating something that runs on pellets I like the idea of running efficient. I'm currently running a diesel heater and I'm going through about 5 gals ever 2 days which is expensive part of that is the bus has window out so it runs full blast heating a small area while I work. I'll still use diesel heat in the bus but I would like secondary wood heating. Also looking at masonry heater. Want something compact.
Is this at Paul's place? Air gap between barrel and cob about 5 inches space?
I assume you are asking about the air gap between the top of the barrel and the cob. That is about 5 inches per Paul's preferences. If I was trying to optimize heat capture from the hot spot up top for slow release I would build the cob mullet directly on the barrel top. Paul worries direct contact with the cob would overheat the barrel metal but I'm finding no evidence of that in other installs. If I am trying to capture that heat and direct it some place useful I like having a gap between the barrel and the cob of about an inch both top and sides to encourage thermosophoning, pulling cold air up behind the barrel and over the top and out the front, warming the air and circulating it into the room. The hot cob mullet keeps the heat from radiating up into the ceiling, then continues to heat and circulate warm air after the fire is gone and the barrel is cold.
@@UncleMud . Thanks for sharing about the air gaps or lack thereof. Can you point me towards some of the builds that use the cob directly on the barrel lid? Many builds seem to rely on a firebricks and ceramic fibers for the ceilings of bells, but those materials are relatively expensive. Barrels are a low cost bell , so if they can be made heat retaining and presentable with cob, that would be great. I am interested in using leave in place forms to cast a "cob" bell around and over a steel barrel. This would be kind of like a Paul's pebble bench, except even cheaper . It would be harder to harder to disassemble for repair. Creating a cast earth plug to cover the lid of the barrel might be enough to address this.
Does the top of the 'pizza oven' slant one way or is it flat?
It is flat. Thank you for watching.
Heh, I thought it looked like the hats worn by the Queen's Guard.
I like that. Thank you for watching.

Hi Uncle Mud!!!
Hello. to you too.
Sooo, wondering how you dont just smoke youself out when lighting
If it is cold out the warm air in the house will cause an automatic draft and the heater starts quite easily. If it is cool outside (say 50 degrees F) I will open the cleanout/priming port at the base of the chimney and light a wax fire starter there then close the port and let the heat create a good draft before lighting the fire in the heater. Thank you for watching.
Nice❤. Form Bangladesh.
Thanks for sharing the love from Bangladesh!
i think the liberator is awesome its a pity they are not sold in new zealand way more efficient for heat amount of wood burnt and generates less pollution and ash
It is a pity. I also work with Gamera.eu who produces a great product and ships worldwide. Tell them Uncle Mud sent you. Thank you for watching.
Do they have smaller models?
The Baby Liberator is sadly no longer in production. If anyone wants to buy my demo unit email me at info@unclemud.com Fired twice for a demo $1200 including shipping. The full sized Liberator is the only one that is UL listed and EPA approved for code install in a regular house. Be aware the big liberator is still a small heater (around 30k BTU per hour) it works well with a mass bench. Gamera.eu produces really great heaters in 3 sizes small to big. They are pollution and safety certified in the EU, but they are not UL listed in the USA.
Thank you
You're welcome
Hi, I'm not a YT creator but I will offer you a simple hint that should help you gain viewers. I will keep it very very simple, speed it up. You have interesting content and you have good volume. You desperately need to work on tempo, pitch and intonation. I had a genuine interest in your rocket stove creation of one of your other video but it just dragged on. God, that sounds extremely critical especially from someone you don't know. I hope you are successful
Thank you for the feedback. That is the way I talk, but I am learning better editing.
Have you tested the temperature of gasses at the top of the heat riser Uncle? I'm thinking that if I built an elevated kiln in the manner of a RMH downdraft bell, I could put this on a dolly and roll it under and have the heat riser just directly feed into the kiln, then downdraft out and up a flue.
Yes. We have tested that. The temperature at the bottom of the riser is hundreds of degrees hotter than it is at the top. We have tested the bell model and found the stratification makes the top way too hot and the bottom way too cold. See th-cam.com/video/ucorbC4lJuw/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUVdW5jbGUgbXVkIHJvY2tldCBraWxu and check out our facebook group for Rocket Kiln development facebook.com/groups/612205583636245/
Very nice
Thank you for watching.
What kind of glass did you use?
pyroceramic glass. Thank you for watching.
I would just call this a cob stove
The name Wofati stove refers to it being in an underground building called a Wofati. Sorry for the confusion. The stove itself would be a "double shoebox rocket stove" referring to the shape and configuration that encourages a complete burn. The pyroceramic glass top lets you cook on it. thank you for watching.
Could I do something similar with concrete?
You could. Absolutely. I wouldn't just out of preference. Concrete, sand and bricks, pretty stones. I do know that when I want to reconfigure the room the cob is going to be a bit of a hassle to remove, but I can oak it and reuse it. Concrete would be a super pain to remove and it would not be reusable.
So please allow my ignorance, is the reason this warms that bench bc the chimney is at the end?
Thank you for asking. The hot chimney goes right through the middle of the whole mass bench to warm it.
@ so it’s essentially a kink in the chimney that just so happens to warm the mound you put on top of it too on its way out the chimney at the end? I’m planning on putting a long one made from cinder blocks under a hydroponic setup to keep my veggies from freezing during the 2-3 days of freezing we have in SE TX. So basically line up the cinder blocks, seal cracks with concrete and put the chimney at the other end voila rocket mass heater? Thanks for your content. It’s helpful.
Greetings from Finland. Nice setup but where are your sauna stove stones?
The barrel very quickly gets hot enough to make steam when you splash water on it. No stones necessary.
Would like to see a video on how you made glass door .
The glass door is just a piece of pyroceramic glass cut to the size of the steel cleanout door with a small notch to hold a wire wrap with a loop in it for a handle to make it easy to open and close. Thank you for watching.
Is there anyway we could tour as well?
drop me a note at info@unclemud.com and I will try to connect you with the owners.
after a few years, are you still using the stove? Looking for something in the greenhouse and a one piece burnchamber + bell sounds very appealing.
Very much. I'm using it right now. I've built several greenhouse rockets. Greenhouses require a lot of heat compared to a similar sized house. The larger Gamera or an even bigger CottageRocket would be a better fit for a greenhouse. Drop me an email at info@unclemud.com if you are interested in a design consultation.
In my basement exhaust is gonna be the problem. Is there a blower you can put on the pipe to push it out I do have a corn burger going out to the side.
I would not trust an electric blower. Wood exhaust tends to wreck those pretty quick. With a mass battery/heat exchanger the exhaust temp tends to be pretty cool so it might work with a pellet heater wall exhaust but I wouldn't chance it. Solid fuel heating appliances should always be connected to their own UL listed double wall insulated stainless steel chimney that goes all the way up to at least two feet above the highest ridge line of the house. Thank you for watching.
hot stuff! what temps u hitting with the thin poly walls? i am planning a sauna finally after 8 years of fantasizing. was thinking cob but if this works i'd prefer the quick, lightweight version
how is the sauna this winter?
hope you're not burning glue from the hardwood floor scraps
No glue, no finishes, just kiln dried hardwood cutoff from the manufacture of hardwood flooring. Thank you for assking.
I’d love to use one of these for a pebble style stove
Nice bench mass and rocket stove!
Thanks for watching!
Salutare din Romania! Cat de lungă este banca care înmagazinează caldura?
@UncleMud, everything looks great. Why did you choose to use pipe thru your bench instead of a stratification chamber? On a scale of 1-10 how satisfied are you w/ the bench? Thanks
Nothing better then seeing the owner/entrepreneur on the floor busting ass ti make it all work! Ordering next week for sure. Manufacturer all my life. Never have I seen the C.E.O ACTIVELY on floor.
Would love to see the break room! 😂
Hard to tell, but looks like so much space.
Love the old school Bridgeport! Memories form long ago.
Looking forward to supporting Missouri small business. Damn. Does that building remind me of old school manufacturing. Is there a promo code for a discount on the gen2 with hopper? Me so poor!

Where do you get this rocket heater from and what's the price point
turn on I just watched a video on the history of Chinese wheelbarrows... similar idea... Wondered why our wheelbarrows are not center balanced like Ray's as you can carry about 10 times as much weight as typical western style
Would have done wonders at the Dogstar!!
A primer port is a lovely thing. Thank you for watching.
You have mentioned that the bench is much lighter than a bench constructed wholly of cob, but I don't think you've mentioned an actual weight. I assume it would have to be estimated, as even if you weighed each bucket of cob going in, when the water left the cob that weight would go down significantly. I also believe you mentioned something in the later video reviewing the performance that it is sitting on the floor joists. I'm assuming the legs are spaced so that they are sitting on the joists, but is that correct? Thank you ;) This approach with the half barrels addresses a couple of common concerns with RMH builds. Very nice.
super. отличное видео хорошего обогревателя для дома. лучше выложить русскую печь из кирпича. будет теплее и есть лежанка. всё давно придумано.
Yay for portable rockets!
Thank you for watching.
Pellets used to be affordable until the current administration screwed up the economy so pellets costs have increased to the point where natural gas is cheaper for us now.
