80wpm: The devastation caused by acid attacks
One of the most challenging things in a shorthand examination is accurately recording and transcribing a list. NCTJ usually limit their lists to three things and limit the number to one. You need to be with the speaker, or very close behind the speaker when the list is dictated because if the dictation has gone on to item two when you have not yet recorded item one then it is going to be challenging to remember the two items, knowing that the speaker will probably be going on to dictate a third item. If you miss words at that point in the dictation, it is virtually impossible at the end to remember the item or items you have missed because there is no context to help you. Therefore in this passage we have included list after list to give you that practice. See how you get on. The overall syllabic count for this one is 1.7 - quite high - so it is a good test before the 80 exam.

Please remember that if an outline is the same for two names for example, Joan and Jane you would not be penalised in an examination if you transcribed the wrong one. Be vigilant though. Repeating words and phrases in dictation practice is really helpful. It's not a mistake - it's done on purpose. For example, you should hear "in the town" (six times) in this passage; "the town" (seven times) and "in the" (six times). Other common repeats will be "of the" (four times), "have been" (three times), and words like "their bikes" or "the community" (three times each). This repetition...

    • @letsloveteelinetogether2273
      @letsloveteelinetogether2273 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You will never ever be a pain. It is always good to hear from you. Thank you for your questions. Indeed, TR and WR can we joined to represent the phrase “there were”. The word “there” can also be written using the three strokes “THR”. (In early textbooks the guideline said that the 3 strokes should be written when “there” begins a sentence or a grouping (such as “there were”) and the long T should be used when “there” follows another word or words, for example “is there”, “if there is”, but nowadays it tends to be the writer’s choice). Personally I think the three strokes saves space (the more outlines on a line the less times the hand has to travel from one line to the next and the page is turned less, but at the same time I love the swish of the long “T” so often I vary it, depending on how I feel and where I am on the line. (There may not be room at the end of a line for a long T but THR may squeeze in nicely). Regarding “inner” I used the NW blend so the outline looks the same as the phrase “in our” but you are correct in that it could also be written with the “I-N-R”. It’s great that Teeline has flexibility, unlike Pitman shorthand where only one version is correct. 🥰

      @priapus56 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@letsloveteelinetogether2273 It's the swish that gets me going too! Especially when combined with a swosh! Thanks so much for your answers. • @priapus56
    @priapus56 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

    One thing I have discovered which might be of use to others. When I first started to attempt speed (shorthand) my hand used to tighten-up and become very stiff. Having too many other things to think about I didn't give the fact any consideration but one day, I don't know exactly when (I was probably soaking in the bath), it occurred to me that if my hand was too tight it must affect my speed. So, I determined to try to hold the pen lightly instead of holding it as if it was a hammer. It's taken some time but now my hold is definitely lighter and I am certain that it has upped my speed.

    • @letsloveteelinetogether2273
      @letsloveteelinetogether2273 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you very much for this comment. I am pleased you have addressed this issue. Writing style does indeed affect speed. Gripping the pen, for example, often means less flexibility in the wrist, and the tension can extend to the shoulder. The writer tires quicker. Also, if writing on a desk, leaning forward can equate to pressing on to the paper, which in turn feels like roller skates on concrete - as opposed to the relaxed writer - gliding on ice. Of course all tension is decreased with growing confidence. Growing confidence is increased by regular practice. Really well done on your progress and thank you once again for sharing your writing tip.

    As always - nice outlines, nice groupings. Although, I did not like the "round" in the suggestion for "all year round". Just dropping an "r" giving "alyrnd" would have been my solution, if I had time to think about it. Using a big b-like circle is rather courageous and the phrase does not really occur that often. For anybody seeing it the very first time it would be hard to decipher. This is a bit of a problem. The philosophy of Teeline permits and encourages the user to invent their own personal groupings. If you only have to read your own stuff this is not an issue. But for somebody taking down a court or parliamentary protocol this would be an absolute no-go. A 2nd stenographer must be able to read the protocol and the protocol itself must be completely unambiguous.

    Another excellent piece to practice along with and some quite challenging outlines. I am quite worried about the resulting biscuit shortage due to the closure of the factory to watch the swimming😂😂😂

    Good as always. "pressure' set me wondering. I was somehow expecting an "sh" in the middle.

    There’s a problem with last tries, or chances. I will write an exam passage about it. 3 eye operations? I do hope you are ok. Welcome back. 😊

      Didn't see this note until today (nothing to do with eyes as they are all right now! Severe tears in both retinas and one hole in right macula. I can thoroughly recommended NOT spending an afternoon undergoing those nifty little procedures...especially with "tricky" eyes which the surgeon told me I am the proud possessor of, but needs must). Thank-you for your kind words...and talking of words...."...we would be grateful for....". That "g" has taken French leave. I know "R"s are allowed to but.... Is that just a little knack purely for this phrase like...seevees in receive? Once again, as always, thank-you so much for your work. Your dedication and joy are irresistibly infectious! (beginning to sound like the Good Old Days...)..or should I say.."Your shun..and oy are ibly and shus!"

      @@letsloveteelinetogether2273 Crickey! You remember me?! I am back, 3 eye operations later, and I am going to give it one last try. Hope you are well. X

    Theory...no problem. Speed....brrrrlhllllmmmm! Big problems!

      Speed WILL come with practise. My recommendation - take short sections and repeat, repeat, repeat - rather as we do in the Speed Development series. Also take speeds you can cope with and then dry pen those outlines as you increase the speed of that passage. Make that part of your daily routine.
