S peppers is a great album, but it is a bit overrated and over hyped. I remember first hearing it when I was about 15, and liking it, but wasn’t really blown away. But it is good. Revolver is better for me.
Is the beatle fan for the last 60 years Abbey Road the last and best album you can round the rest up anyway you want Sergeant Pepper's revolver great albums Rubber Soul they're all phenomenal❤
I think the main reason was that of argument 1: People just got sick of everybody unanimously praising it and started saying it was overrated just to give the impression of "I think on my own". Sometimes things are really overrated, and it's right to point out that the unanimous opinion about it is wrong, but I don't think that this is the case of Sgt. Pepper's. I think that, as an album, that is, as a whole, it really is the best Beatles' album.
Revolver is simply, better and best.
The only truth is that Revolver and Abbey Road are easier to digest. Sgt. Pepper isn’t for this crazy, fast-paced world we live in - it requires concentration and doesn’t bring entertainment or confidence. You need to set aside time, put on headphones and completely immerse yourself in the world of Sgt. Pepper. And it’s hard to do that in today’s world of selfies and fast living.
People do not understand the absolute and breathtaking breakthrough in music that was Sgt Pepper. Sounded light years ahead of its time, current and nostalgic all at the same time. Whether the Beatles topped it is somewhat fun, irrelevant, and amusing discussion, but what other 60 year old album is even in the discussion?
My next video is all about those breakthroughs!
I mean, Abbey Road IS the best
Sgt pepper just had the eye candy appeal and was radically different than anything in the same time period. Abbey road is just timeless. Would succeed in any era
Mid album
Rubber Soul is the beatles at their finest.
The white album is their best. Abbey road second.
The 1,2, 3 on the thumbnail for this video just reflects the average position of these albums in recent polls of critics and musicians. It is not my opinion.
I was 18 when Sgt. Pepper was released. The music was deeply haunting, like opening a door to a new dimension.
one thing I think could be a factor is most people unknowlingly listen to the stereo versions. and sgt. pepper in particular i think sounds so much worse compared to the mono ones, e.g johns vocal in lucy sounding completely wrong. the psychadelic era in general you really need to listen to them in mono because seperating the instruments often ruins the intentional fusion of different sounds.
There are two interviews on TH-cam with Geoff Emerick and Richard Lush, the engineers on Sgt Pepper. One of them, can't remember which, says the stereo mix was done after the album was completed in bad faith - I think the mono mixes were done pretty much as soon as a song was complete.
@@songdoctor5783 yep and the issue is in the modern day, people naturally will listen to stereo since mono is all but phased out. but some stuff just sounds completely wrong so its ruining these songs for the future generations. other big offenders are stuff like happy together by the turtles, iirc it was remastered sometime in the 80's and ever since then theres a wierd reverb in the snare and the mix is gone. summer in the city bass ruined too
@@jamiekb9v Yes, the point Lush/ Emerick was making was that if you mix after the fact, then it starts to become guesswork and/or you have lost the original feel of the session.
I don't give time of day to people who can't appreciate how extraordinary Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite is
I was uninterested in Pepper’s before it was cool folks. Never been a fave and I never put it on. I think none of my top 25 Beatles songs is on that album. Should’ve just asked me and I could’ve saved people years of having incorrect opinions.
You know, I’m just happy that people still enjoy the Beatles but I think sgt pepper is still the best to me! Abbey might be fifth at best if I ranked their albums tbh
To reset the balance my next video is all about what is good on Sgt Peppers. Listening to it again after a few years, the thing that jumps out is the sound engineering - particularly on the vocals.
Revolver and rubber soul is peak Beatles
I appreciate that the topic of musical opinion is subjective, but with respect, this is Rubbish ! 'Sgt Pepper ' was a ground breaking recording achievement which, given the studio technology available in that era, was 5 or 6 years ahead of its time. As was the Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' (which influenced the Beatles & George Martin to approach studio craft as a whole/new concept) There may indeed have been 'better' songs on Revolver & Abbey Rd, but for me, Sgt Pepper was The 'game changer' of that period.
Still rate Sgt Pepper ahead of any Beatles album after it. But I certainly rate Revolver and Rubber Soul as it’s equals.
Been saying for 40 years that St Peppers has never been their best album. It has great songs yes, we know. Just like Magical Mystery Tour has great songs, too.
I just finished listening to Apple Music’s Top 100 Albums. I managed to stay spoiler free the whole time. After I finished the No. 2 album, I was completely positive that Sgt. Peppers was going to be No. 1. I’m still completely baffled that it didn’t even make the list at all!
I think the message young people in the music business get is that Sgt Pepper is uncool.
I don't think Here There & Everywhere only uses 8 chords, when the song contains an intro, verse (in 2 parts), chorus, and a bridge with each one having their own chords progression
Its a long time since I tried to play this on guitar - I took the chords from Ultimate Guitar Tab webpage.
@@songdoctor5783 yeah idk, maybe it's 8 chords. I didn't said it in my comment but I really enjoy your videos, the topics you cover are really interesting!
LOL! This is more anti-baby boomer nonsense, like saying Joe Namath, Elvis, John Wayne, or anyone from the 1990s or earlier are overrated.
Close to the Edge by Yes is the best album ever
Any top album list without DSOTM in top 5 is automatically invalid.
It's simply that the songs as a whole aren't as strong or consistent as those on their other albums. The sound and "psychedelic" effects also date some of the songs, and many of them are not "playlist" friendly in a world of spotify and streaming services.
Interesting theory about the sound. Personally don’t think it’s that as most younger generations just don’t consume music in the same way anymore by listening to albums in their entirety. Think it’s more a reaction to being told how great it was for so many years and the diversity thing. One of those lists you put up seriously put Lauryn Hills album as the GOAT??? Wow. I like it but could easily name 100 better and more influential LPs.
Let it Be is a better album than Abbey Road, Sergeant Pepper is probably technically superior but I prefer Revolver
Abbey Road seems like something they put together quickly & there's some pretty bad songs on side 1
For my taste, similar to Dark Side of the Moon, I’ve just heard it too much and I’m tired of it.
I’m a massive Beatles fan but I think Revolver is overrated. For me Abbey Road, White Album, Sgt Pepper, Let It be and Rubber Soul are all better.
That is not a popular opinion on this thread! But, we all like different stuff don't we?
In the immortal words of Jeffery Jones’ Emperor Joseph in Amadeus: Too many notes. It’s a bit too baroque and frankly twee for modern sensibilities, vs the stripped down concise brilliance of Revolver.
Give me Revolver and Rubber Soul. Both of those albums are much better listens than Sgt. Pepper (A Day in the Life notwithstanding).
sgt peppers abd abbey Road both are high rated because of the concept, not the songs themselves because both records have many fillers, revolver is the best musically, far better than the other two
I really don’t like Abbey apart from the obvious stand out tracks. Ffs Mean Mr mustard…..some truly terrible tracks on that album IMO.
I think it is fair to say that Abbey Road is objectively their best album. It has the best collection of songs, best production that's made it hold up better than the rest, and is the most complete. Sgt. Peppers and Revolver are damn close, with Revolver being a fantastic album (probably better than Peppers), influential for being the shift in the bands music (live band to studio band, psychedelia/spiritual), and for inspiring Pet Sounds. But Pepper is the most iconic, and the most groundbreaking. Very much an experimental/concept album that innovated a lot, but the quality of the album did suffer (minorly) for that reason. Also what a fucking great album cover man.
20th century Pepper 21st century Abbey 22nd century Revolve
Sgt. Pepper's was more influental and technically brilliant as a concept album than anything else before or shortly after, that is why it was the most popular for a long time. People's perception and taste change over time. Personally, I bought a very nice early 70s pressing of Sgt. Pepper's recently (since my 1967 US release was too worn down) and it sounds absolutely amazing on vinyl. Really mindblowing!!
Sgt Pepper is great album, but in my opinion, Revolver is better and even more influential.
I got heavily into The Beatles in the early 90s. I *always* thought Pepper was overrated, and preferred Abbey Road , The White Album and Revolver. While Pepper features my favourite Beatles song ("A Day in the Life"), there are a number of tracks I simply don't like ("Fixing a Hole", "She's Leaving Home" and, especially, "Within you Without You"). While it was undoubtedly a revolutionary album at the time it was released (before I was born), I blatantly disregard such hoopla and judge albums purely on their musical content. On that basis, Pepper was never the best Beatles album (Abbey Road is my favourite), IMO.
Sgt Pepper is definitely the most impactful album of all time. It told all the baby boomers “you can do whatever you want with your music and it’s okay”. Which lead to so many amazing sounds of the 70’s and all the stuff that was built from that. I think like you said though, people just got tired of ranking it #1 probably along with Pet Sounds as well
Yes, so true. I am working now on a video about all that is good about Sgt Pepper and once you write it down there is a very impressive lists of firsts.
Both pet sound's and sgt Peppers are basically close the more orchestral sounding 60's the Spector Influenced wall of sound, session musicians etc and opened the artistic centric, executed by the band members and more outlandish psychodelia more palatable to the public, both are huge events in music and both suffer the fate of being dated due to the fact both were events in time
Well, I suppose they’ve been going in and out of style.
Sgt peppers is not that good compared to Abbey Road or Revolver. It’s simple as that
I think Abbey Road is the strangest number one. 1966 and 67 were such monumental explosions of the album as we know it. Pet Sounds, Revolver, Sgt Peppers, The Velvet Underground all played a part in establishing the rock album as an art form. These two albums are real turning points for the Beatles. Abbey Road is culturally less impactful than the other two. It's just a great sounding album with great tracks and has an additional emotional hook by being the Beatles' swan song.
Yep, I think you are right. Abbey Road is largely about quality, not so much about innovation. I think from 1969, the Stooges debut album and the two Led Zeppelin albums were moving rock music forward.
Huge Beatles fan here, and going purely from the songwriting rather than production or engineering even Hard Days Night and Rubber Soul are better than Sgt. Peppers. There’s about 4 good songs on it and a Day in the Life has to be their most criminally overrated song
It was innovative and experimental when that was almost unknown, but, ultimately, it's not very good music.
Try listening to 'A Hard Day's Night'. It's the early Beatles at their best; all the songs were self-written and it's been described as 'pure guitar-driven pop' - without all the later gimmickry or drug-fuelled psychedelic pretension.
TBH - It's not very good - there's far better Beatles albums NOW. Maybe it was groundbreaking back in the day, but it's now 2024 and other Beatles albums hold up far better.
Never quite got the hype around Pepper’s. It feels like it had an incredible impact, rather than incredible songs. (Relative to the Beatle’s lofty standards, of course.)
I didn't know a video could be this informative in such a short amount of time. A lesser youtuber would have extended this to the 10 minute mark.
